Book Picturing America Thomas Cole and the Birth of American Art

Download or read book Picturing America Thomas Cole and the Birth of American Art written by Hudson Talbott and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating look at artist Thomas Cole's life takes readers from his humble beginnings to his development of a new painting style that became America's first formal art movement: the Hudson River school of painting. Thomas Cole was always looking for something new to draw. Born in England during the Industrial Revolution, he was fascinated by tales of the American countryside, and was ecstatic to move there in 1818. The life of an artist was difficult at first, however Thomas kept his dream alive by drawing constantly and seeking out other artists. But everything changed for him when he was given a ticket for a boat trip up the Hudson River to see the wilderness of the Catskill Mountains. The haunting beauty of the landscape sparked his imagination and would inspire him for the rest of his life. The majestic paintings that followed struck a chord with the public and drew other artists to follow in his footsteps, in the first art movement born in America. His landscape paintings also started a conversation on how to protect the country's wild beauty. Hudson Talbott takes readers on a unique journey as he depicts the immigrant artist falling in love with--and fighting to preserve--his new country.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “A richly textured portrait . . . an intimate look at a closed Orthodox community.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK It is 1976. And the tiny upstate New York town of Kaaterskill Falls is bustling with summer people in dark coats, fedoras, and long, modest dresses. Living side by side with Yankee year-rounders, they are the disciples of Rav Elijah Kirshner. Elizabeth Shulman is a restless wife and mother of five daughters; her imagination transcends her cloistered community. Across the street Andras Melish is drawn to Kaaterskill by his adoring older sisters. Comforted, yet crippled by his sisters’ love, he cannot overcome the ambivalence he feels toward his own children and his young wife. At the top of the hill, Rav Kirshner is nearing the end of his life. As he struggles to decide which of his sons should succeed him—the pious but stolid Isaiah or the brilliant but rebellious Jeremy—his followers wrestle with their future and their past. With this community, Allegra Goodman weaves magic. The nationally bestselling author of The Family Markowitz crafts a tale of family and tradition—one that confirms this author’s place as a virtuoso of her generation.

Book excerpt: Ita Wegman is not only an inspiring genius of Anthroposophy, but she is also a healing genius of anthroposophic medicine. Perseverance, courage, greatness mark her being (Emanuel Zeylmans van Emmichoven). With great empathy, delicacy, and directness, Peter Selg recounts, in three lectures, the moving story of Ita Wegman and her relationship with Rudolf Steiner in the context of the development of anthroposophic medicine and the formation of the Medical Section of the School for Spiritual Science. Steiner had suffered patiently until the right person--Ita Wegman--arrived to guide spiritual science's healing mission into the medical field. In the fall of 1920, Ita Wegman founded a medical clinic in Arlesheim. From then on, she and Steiner worked together, both medically and spiritually, gradually unveiling a karmic working relationship unique in Steiner's life. Thus the stage is set. "By taking in the war-traumatized children we will not lose sight of our task in curative education, on the contrary, it is the actual realization of this task, and if one cannot see that, one is not going forward with the big strides of time. I assure you that I will not fall into small steps; I want to stay with the big strides" (Ita Wegman, Aug. 20, 1942). The second lecture focuses on anthroposophic curative, or therapeutic, education: "the social center, the heart even, of Ita Wegman's 'Medical Section'; To make a commitment to children with severe obstacles in their incarnation, out of spiritual insight into the human being and the wider karmic context, and to make this commitment as a group of people working out of a Christian-religious impulse" this was for Ita Wegman the true anthroposophic medicine." Dr. Selg then describes Dr. Wegman's heroic efforts to create a true community of physicians working anthroposophically out of Steiner's indications and in the spirit of Christ; how she looked after her colleagues, always seeking to wake them up "to the destiny of their own being." She also tried to resist all that was happening in Nazi Germany, never forgetting Steiner's warning: "In the future, the Anthroposophical Society will be faced with the crucial decision of whether responsibilities will be met or not." This is the heart of this wonderful book--the inner struggle to make love responsible.
