Book excerpt: Along with the Book of Common Prayer and the Articles of Religion, the first book of homilies (1547) is the major legacy of the Edwardian Reformation. Its twelve sermons articulated a doctrinal standard, assisted the parochial clergy in their preaching, and served the religious establishment as a means of propaganda. The sermons are plain but sophisticated expression of the interests of the early protestants in England. They are concerned with not only the primacy of the Bible and the relationship of faith to good works, but also matters of Christian conduct such as sexual morality, swearing, the attitude to death, charity, and obedience. Since they were required reading from most English pulpits these homilies were probably heard by writers as different as Shakespeare, Spenser, and Donne and eventually influenced John Wesley in the eighteenth century, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Cardinal Newman in the nineteenth. The first book of homilies was joined by a second in 1563 and by the long, polemical homily against rebellion. The introduction traces the development and decline of interest in the homilies both as aids for preachers and as statements of reformed doctrine. In addition it analyses the themes, organizations, and styles of the homilies presented. The text preserves the original spelling and is accompanied by brief explanatory notes and a critical apparatus.

Its goal is to provide a representative sample of Fagundo's work for an English audience. With the basic tenet of phenomenology as scaffold, the introduction of this anthology elucidates Fagundo's poetic writing as a process whereby the abstract is transformed into a concrete experience through the speaker's own self and body. From Brotes/Buds in 1965 until Trasterrado Marzo/March Beyond in 1999, Fagundo's poetry is an ongoing dialogue with the poetic word. Fagundo's poetic speaker looks into essences, but only in order to reintegrate them into existence. There is no Truth or Beauty or Good out there for which this poet strives, but a truth that each poet articulates in his or her own way. Book excerpt: In a speech before Zurich's city council in 1553, Heinrich Bullinger declared that "the crown of England has entirely the teaching and faith that we also have." These words suggest a more direct and abiding relationship between the English and Zurich Reformations than has been recognized by previous historians. This book deepens our understanding of Swiss and English Protestantism, while simultaneously shedding light on the interactive practices of early modern cultural and intellectual communities and the history of the book. Three aspects of Zurich theology and practice attracted English evangelicals to Zurich's tradition of Reformed Protestantism: rejection of the material aspects of Catholic piety, a strong anti-Anabaptist tradition, and stress on the unity of the religious and secular spheres under the authority of the civil magistrate. Dr Euler illustrates how English reformers adopted these ideas and applied them in England, allowing reformers like Bullinger to point to England as a potential ally and model of success for the Zurich tradition. Carrie Euler received her Ph. D. from Johns Hopkins University in 2004. She has published several articles on the Zurich and English Reformations in various volumes and journals, including the Sixteenth Century Journal. She is currently Assistant Professor of History at Central Michigan University.
