Book excerpt: Echoing James Forman Jr.’s Locking Up Our Own, a riveting story of race, civil rights, and rebellion in Washington, DC In April 1968, following the murder of Martin Luther King Jr., a wave of uprisings swept across America. None was more visible—or resulted in more property damage, arrests, or federal troop involvement—than in Washington, DC, where thousands took to the streets in protest against racial inequality, looting and burning businesses in the process. The nation’s capital was shaken to its foundations. When the Smoke Cleared tells the story of the Washingtonians who seized the moment to rebuild a more just society, one that would protect and foster Black political and economic power. A riveting account of activism, urban reimagination, and political transformation, Kyla Sommers’s revealing and deeply researched narrative is ultimately a tale of blowback, as the Nixon administration and its allies in Congress thwarted the ambitions of DC’s reformers, opposing civil rights reforms and self-governance. And nationwide, conservative politicians used the specter of crime in the capital to roll back the civil rights movement and create the modern carceral state. A vital chapter in the struggle for racial equality, When the Smoke Cleared is an account of open wounds, paths not taken, and their unforeseen consequences—revealed here in all of their contemporary significance.

Book Courts

Download or read book Courts written by United States. National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents proposals for the restructuring and streamlining of the processing of criminal cases at state and local levels. A major restructuring and streamlining of procedures and practices in processing criminal cases at state and local levels is proposed by the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals. The proposals of the Commission appear in the form of specific standards and recommendations -- almost 100 in all -- that spell out in detail where, why, how, and what improvements can and should be made in the judicial segment of the criminal justice system. The report on courts is a reference work for the practitioner -- judge, court administrator, prosecutor, or defender -- as well as the interested layman. The Commission argues that the problems which keep the criminal court system from performing its functions are inconsistency in the processing of criminal defendants, uncertainty concerning results obtained, unacceptable delays, and alienation of the community. In composing suggested improvements for the court system, the Commission's first priority is to devise standards for attaining speed and efficiency in the pretrial and trial processes and prompt finality in appellate proceedings. The second priority is the upgrading of defense and prosecution functions and the third priority is the assurance of a high quality in the judiciary. To expedite pretrial procedures the prosecutor should screen all criminal cases coming before him and divert from the system all cases wherein further processing by the prosecutor is not appropriate. Among Commission recommendations are: elimination of all but the investigative function of the grand jury; elimination of formal arraignment; unification of all courts within each state; and the upgrading of criminal court personnel.

Book The Black Panther Party in a City Near You

Download or read book The Black Panther Party in a City Near You written by Judson L. Jeffries and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume in Judson L. Jeffries's long-range effort to paint a more complete portrait of the most widely known organization to emerge from the 1960s Black Power Movement. Like its predecessors (Comrades: A Local History of the Black Panther Party [2007] and On the Ground: The Black Panther Party in Communities across America [2010]), this volume looks at Black Panther Party (BPP) activity in sites outside Oakland, the most studied BPP locale and the one long associated with oversimplified and underdeveloped narratives about, and distorted images of, the organization. The cities covered in this volume are Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, and Washington, D.C. The contributors examine official BPP branches and chapters as well as offices of the National Committee to Combat Fascism that evolved into full-fledged BPP chapters and branches. They have mined BPP archives and interviewed members to convey the daily ups-and-downs related to BPP's social-justice activities and to reveal the diversity of rank-and-file BPP members' personal backgrounds and the legal, political, and social skills, or baggage, that they brought to the BPP. The BPP reportedly had a presence in some forty places across the country. During this time, no other Black Power Movement organization fed as many children, provided healthcare to as many residents, educated as many adults, assisted as many senior citizens, and clothed as many people. In point of fact, no other organization of the Black Power era had as great an impact on American lives as did the BPP. Nonetheless, when Jeffries undertook this project, chapter-level scholarly investigations of the BPP were few and far between. This third book, The Black Panther Party in a City Near You, raises the number of BPP branches that Jeffries and his contributors have examined to seventeen. Contributors: Curtis Austin, Judson L. Jeffries, Charles E. Jones, Ava Kinsey, Duncan MacLaury, Sarah Nicklas, John Preusser.
