The facts, however, reflect abuses of due process: lynch mobs and hired gunslingers rather than lawmen regularly pursued lawbreakers; vengeance rather than justice was often employed; and even in courts of law justice didn't always prevail. Some films and novels bucked this trend, however. This book discusses the many Western films as well as the novels they are based on, that illustrate distortions of the law in the Old West and the many ways, most of them marked by vengeance, in which its characters pursued justice.

Built during the twelfth century, it became a legendary place - the inspiration of more poems, plays and novels than any other building in London. It was a place of cruelty and wretchedness, at various times holding Dick Turpin, Titus Oates, Daniel Defoe, Jack Sheppard and Casanova. Because prisons were privately run, any time spent in prison had to be paid for by the prisoner. Housing varied from a private cell with a cleaning woman and a visiting prostitute, to simply lying on the floor with no cover. Those who died inside - and only a quarter of prisoners survived until their execution day - had to stay in Newgate as a rotting corpse until relatives found the money for the body to be released. Stephen Halliday tells the story of Newgate's origins, the criminals it held, the punishments meted out and its rebuilding and reform. This is a compelling slice of London's social and criminal history.

Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. Therefore, the actions and motivations of these players are entirely my idea. Again, simply put, there is no connection in the manner I brought them into the book. If I have caused embarrassment to anyone other than some judges I have directed my anger to or the attorneys, the security men of Circus Circus Hotel & Casino, and the cops, in any manner, I wish, here and now, to apologize openly and sincerely. And bear in mind that without the humanities—with the novelists, playwrights, poets, and actors of our world, let alone the comedians to express the First Amendment or mock those who wrong us or who rule the world—we would not have movies or theaters.
