Book excerpt: Long before the deaths of Wales manager Gary Speed and Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke shocked football, the Scottish game was forced to deal with a numbing death of its own over Christmas 1985. International full-back Erich Schaedler, aged 36, was found dead in a Borders beauty spot, with a shotgun by his side and no suicide note or motive for taking his own life. A straightforward suicide? So it seemed at the time, but family and friends are not so sure, and to this day mystery surrounds his tragic death. Schaedler's loss was felt deeply in the game. He was one of the fittest, hardest men in Scottish football, and appeared indestructible. Fearless and ferocious as a player but a gentleman and genial character off the pitch, Schaedler stood out from the crowd with his lung-bursting runs, long throw-ins and dedicated fitness. Enjoying a career encompassing clubs such as Stirling Albion, Hibernian's Turnbull's Tornadoes team of the 1970s, Dundee, Dumbarton and, of course, the Scotland international team of 1974 World Cup fame, he proved how far hard work and commitment can take a professional sportsman. For the first time, Shades presents an intimate portrait of an incredible man, pieced together by his family, friends, managers, trainers and teammates, who share their memories of a man lost in his prime and a person who enriched the lives of all he knew, both on and off the pitch.

  • Author : Alex Cropley
  • Publisher : Luath Press Ltd
  • Release : 2013-12-20
  • ISBN : 1909912654
  • Pages : 293 pages

Download or read book Crops written by Alex Cropley and published by Luath Press Ltd. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nippy sweetie, he was always moaning, but that is often the sign of a great player - a real determination to succeed and a refusal to settle for second best. PAT STANTONI used to flinch when Studs wound up for a challenge and he feared no one as he sometimes threw his whole body into a tackle. That meant we also spent too much time together in the treatment room. ANDY GRAY Alex Cropley had just left school when he was picked up as one of Scotland's latest football talents. Signed to Hibernian aged just 16, Cropley soon made his name as a player on the team's legendary Turnbull's Tornadoes side. Over the 1970s, he played for Hibernian, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Toronto Blizzard and Portsmouth, before a number of injuries forced him off the pitch. From a football-mad kid playing on the streets of Edinburgh to a member of the Scottish national team, his career epitomises both the aspirations and the bitter disappointments surrounding the game on the pitch. Cropley's tale of his time on (and off) the pitch isn't just the tale of one man's odyssey, however, but rather offers a glimpse into the footballing landscape of the time, with an engaging and often wry depiction of the larger-than-life characters who went on to become the greats of Scottish football. A frank but warm-hearted account of the hopes and despair of the great game, Crops will delight football fans of all ages.

Book Geoff Bradford

Download or read book Geoff Bradford written by Mike Jay and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bristol Rovers' most famous player is undoubtedly Geoff Bradford. He holds the club record for goals scored (242 in 461 Football League appearances) and remains the only player to win a Full England International cap while with the club. To research this book, the authors have been given access to an archive of information and original photographs from his family. Bristol-born Geoff was a loyal one-club man having turned down the option of a transfer to First Division Liverpool. He suffered two very severe career-threatening knee injuries and returned to play football for his club, who rewarded him with a Testimonial match at the end of his fifteenth season. Besides representing England, he also won other honours for Rovers winning the Third Division (South) Championship in 1952/53 and also played in many representative matches for the English Football Association including a six-week tour to the West Indies in 1955. There has never been a biography of Bradford, so this will be a welcome title for all dedicated Rovers fans.

Book Into the Light

Book excerpt: Into the Light reveals the full thrilling story of Sunderland Football Club - charting the club's progress from being the first great team to dominate the Football League, to the squad which returned to the top of English soccer at the dawn of the new millennium. Hutchinson traces a journey from Newcastle Road to the Stadium of Light by way of Roker Park. The early days of the Team Of All The Talents - the side in red-and-white stripes which took the English League by storm, breaking records and their opponents' hearts year after brilliant year - are brought vividly to life for the first time. Great goalscorers like Johnny Campbell and Jimmy Gillespie and sensational goalkeepers such as the legendary Ned Doig stride out of the pages of Into The Light; and the figures whose brilliance made Roker roar - from Len Shackleton and Brian Clough to the modern greats - are vividly portrayed. League successes came easily and early to Sunderland. Into The Light explores the club's devotion to winning trophies with style. The long - and finally triumphant - quest for FA cup victories is followed game by game. The heartbreaks and disappointments are also here in this see-saw ride through 120 years of English football, which ends as it began - right at the very top. This is the history of a football club and more - it is the tale of British soccer.

Hats off!” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) When a tiny fish shoots into view wearing a round blue topper (which happens to fit him perfectly), trouble could be following close behind. So it’s a good thing a certain enormous fish hasn’t woken up. And even if he does, it’s not like he’ll ever know what happened, right? Book The Candidates

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matthew S. Hiley
  • Publisher : Greenleaf Book Group
  • Release : 2016-05-10
  • ISBN : 1626342695
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book The Candidates written by Matthew S. Hiley and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warning: The Candidates: Based on a True Country is not for the faint of heart. It is a political satire of epic disproportion. The story centers on Skip LaDouche and Harry Pinko, the two front-runners campaigning for the presidency of the United States, who have managed to claw, bribe, and scam their way up the political ladder. They are what we’ve come to expect from our leaders: self-serving and unqualified. When Kimmy Faimwhorre, the reality television star that they are both having an affair with, turns up murdered, the candidates take campaigning to its most primal form . . . complete and total destruction of the opposition. Nothing is sacred in this violently comic short novel from Matthew S. Hiley. His wit is sharp and quick, and this story is dark, cynical, and hilarious. Politics-as-usual and pop-culture are thoroughly skewered in one of the most absurd and entertaining stories ever told.

Book Great Struggle

Download or read book Great Struggle written by Dinesh K. Agarwal and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is written in the background of Wesleyan holiness of life or social holiness---the spiritual heritage of people called Methodist. The author writes of his pioneering pastoral ministry and service to the poor and needy, as well as his election to Bishopric in the midst of conflict and complexities of democratic practices. He tells how he faced his Episcopal ministrys challenges and risks while doing right things and making things right. He recognizes the hangover of the foreign missionary era and tendencies like sons of the soil ideology, people group and little community affinity act as barriers. He writes how spiritual leaders were intolerant to his prophetic voice and by force of power ambition conspired and acted like Brutus. His two hundred thirty days were of immense agony, never could he imagine that he would face it. However, he says by Gods grace, he was unwavered to do whatever it took to overcome it. He struggled to get justice which was frustrated. Then, by turn of events, some recognized wrong done to him and yet were not penitent enough to reconcile and restitute. Regardless, he believes that truth and justice to be adored, the paradigm of holiness of life has to returns.
