Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American noir at its finest. “[A] diverse collection of stories which reflect the harshness and also the brittle brilliance of life in Mexico City.”—MostlyFiction Book Reviews Akashic Books’s acclaimed series of original noir anthologies has set a high standard for portraying cities and their neighborhoods in all their dark and violent splendor. Now, “Mexico City Noir surpasses that standard with phantasmagorical tales of double-dealing, corruption, violence and self-delusion . . . This collection is such a varied literary feast. Fans of Jorge Luis Borges will find surprises galore in the story ‘Violeta Isn’t Here Anymore.’ The noir-ish maze that Myriam Laurini constructs with her flair for the shifting realities of ‘magical realism’ is dazzling enough, and then up pops Borges . . . “Peel back one layer and find something totally unexpected, these tales tell us again and again. As Eduardo Monteverde writes, ‘the heart of Mexico City is made of mud and green rocks, and the God of Rain continues to cry over the whole country.’ And standing on that ground, the 12 writers here find inspiration to die for” (Shelf Awareness). This anthology includes brand-new stories by Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Eugenio Aguirre, Eduardo Antonio Parra, Bernardo Fernández Bef, Óscar de la Borbolla, Rolo Díez, Victor Luiz González, F.G. Haghenbeck, Juan Hernández Luna, Myriam Laurini, Eduardo Monteverde, and Julia Rodríguez.

Book excerpt: Virgil Richardson blazed his own unique trail through the twentieth century: a co-founder of Harlem's American Negro Theater, 1930s radio personality, World War II pilot, and expatriate for most of his life. In Flight, this remarkable man tells his story in his own vivid words. Educated in Texas, Richardson set out for New York City in 1938 to build a career on the stage. Just when he was on the brink of success as an actor, World War II broke out and he was drafted into the army. After overcoming numerous obstacles, Richardson became a Tuskegee cadet in 1943, and later saw action flying over the battlefields of Europe. Upon returning to the racially divided U.S., he decided to move to Mexico, where he encountered a society quite different from the one he had left behind. Compellingly told and historically fascinating, this is the story of a determined individual unwilling to accept the limited options of Jim Crow America.

But with his mother being Jewish, still living in Iran, it is not a difficult task. With the aid of Juan Hernandez, he travels to Mexico, buys a sniper rifle and scope, and is hustled aboard a coyote’s boxed truck loaded with people who will be entering the States illegally. Aboard the truck, he comes to the aid of a Mexican woman, Isabella, who is being hassled by the other travelers. Book Bohemian Rhetoric

Download or read book Bohemian Rhetoric written by Lucas D. Camaney and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019 with total page 1048 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My friend, a pseudo-intellectual like so many of us out here, once told me that culture, class and sophistication are concepts that are for everyone to grasp and not only meant for the rich people to enjoy. If any person should think that cultural likings, can’t give to him or her an international type of robust living, it is because that person has decided to stay introverted by choice, rather than circumstance. If humanity doesn’t destroy the ecospheres or plunges itself into a nuclear war, the end of our basic existence will become phenomenal with impersonal technology. As it is the children of today seldom climb a tree to look into the nest of an amazing bird and for that we can only imagine what will be of the children living one thousand years from now? I have written them a letter in hope that the life sustaining properties of our planet Earth are still there for them to use and get to also enjoy the sun being born out of the Caribbean Sea. We should consider ourselves bless for having nature be so nice, to you and I, till this day already gone by.

Book excerpt: Barnaby Skye, the earthy deserter from the Royal Navy who has carved a career in the Rocky Mountains as a trapper, guide, and magnet for adventure, drifts south to Mexican territory with his Crow Indian wife, Many Quills Woman (or "Victoria," as he calls her), in this thirteenth and newest of the Skye chronicles. At Bent's Fort on the Mexican frontier, the Skyes agree to help a mysterious Cheyenne woman, Standing Alone, locate her two children who were kidnapped by Ute Indians several years before and sold into bondage in Mexico. The mission, impossible, dangerous, and foolhardy to all Skye's friends, takes the three to Santa Fe and Taos and into a strange association with an eccentric, self-proclaimed Texas adventurer and filibuster, Colonel Childress, who agrees to help them for reasons no one can guess. Childress has a wagon decorated with a Jolly Roger, an enormous Clydesdale horse, and a pet spider monkey named Shine, whose nimble talent for stealing food and performing for coins saves the lives of Skye and his party on several occasions. But neither the colonel nor his simian can prevent the inevitable consequences of an uninvited foray into forbidden territory. The party is robbed and left naked in the desert by Apaches; Skye is taken prisoner and sentenced to hang; Childress seems to be a traitor but rescues Victoria and Standing Alone, and is determined to find Skye and free him from his captors. The Deliverance is the thirteenth in a series of early American West frontier novels featuring Richard Wheeler's Barnaby Skye, the most beloved and enduring character in modern Western fiction.
