Download or read book Appalachian Mountain Girl written by Rhoda Bailey Warren and published by ChicagoReviewPress + ORM. This book was released on 2005-08-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appalachian Mountain Girl is a sensitive and beautifully written autobiographical account of a childhood in the coalmine district of Depression-era Kentucky. With humor and warmth—but without sentimentality—Rhoda Warren recounts the lives of these mining people whose religion and family values buttressed and sustained them. As a young girl, Rhoda began to catch glimpses of the world outside her narrow mountain community through the stories in True Confessions magazine and the pictures in the Montgomery Ward catalog—which to her seemed like “visions of a fairy world.” When Rhoda married and moved to a small town in New York State, it seemed that her dreams of a better life had been realized. Yet scenes of Letcher always “hovered in the back roads of her memory.” When she revisited her homeland, this time as a New Yorker, Rhoda found that Letcher was no longer the place of her memories.
Download or read book It s the Mountain Way written by Donna M. Bevans Ph. D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the Mountain Way is a coming-of-age story filled with suspense and memories of first love. Savannah Benjamin, born and raised in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, knew the ways of the mountain. She had only experienced the outside world from the books she read. But books couldn't teach her how first love felt, or explain why some people who seemed good were not always trustworthy. They didn't tell her that teenagers could be mean or unfriendly. These lessons she had to learn for herself. Set in 1983, marrying young was not unusual in the isolated hollows and villages of the mountains. At fourteen, Savannah was no longer a child, but not yet an adult. Her mother had married at fifteen, she wanted more for her daughter. Horace Jenks, the local moonshiner, had other plans for Savannah.
Download or read book A Woman Like That written by Joan Larkin and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of "coming out" has the power to transform every aspect of a woman's life: family, friendships, career, sexuality, spirituality. An essential element of self-realization, it is the unabashed acceptance of one's "outlaw" standing in a predominantly heterosexual world. These accounts -- sometimes heart-wrenching, often exhilarating -- encompass a wide breadth of backgrounds and experiences. From a teenager institutionalized for her passion for women to the mother who must come out to her young sons at the risk of losing them -- from the cautious academic to the raucous liberated femme -- each woman represented here tells of forging a unique path toward the difficult but emancipating recognition of herself. Extending from the 1940s to the present day, these intensely personal stories in turn reflect a unique history of the changing social mores that affected each woman's ability to determine the shape of her own life. Together they form an ornate tapestry of lesbian and bisexual experience in the United States over the past half-century.

Download or read book Challenged Lovers written by Fadzai Zimunya and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the power of love over all else. Both Danai and Fadzai are first-born children and expectations were understandably very high. The central message here is that parents need to impart all they believe their offspring need to get and this needs to be during the formative years. Young adults are subjected to societal influences that may not be in line with what the parents have in mind. Life lessons must be given but respect of the young mind is critical to maintain balance. Most parents find that they are busy with the day-to-day life demands, to the extent that their offspring are left to find their ways. Outside influences end up shaping the young minds. In this true story the challenge came when the two young adults fell in love and decided to marry. Their love was stronger than all efforts to separate them.
Download or read book Elsewhen written by William Patterson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Mahmood approached them, Jimmy saw what was in Mahmood's good hand. He knew what it was. Mahmood used such devices frequently on his captives and had used such a device on Jimmy before. Jimmy screamed louder in rage and frustration. "I do not want that on my head." He tried to move away from Mahmood but made little progress because of the handcuffs. Mahmood reached over to try to put the device on. Jimmy bent his head away from Mahmood in order to avoid the device. Jimmy was unsuccessful and the device went on. When the sphere touched the top of his head, it flowed out in all directions, assuming a more flattened shape. It stuck to his head despite the fact that he used his free hand to try to pull it off. He started sobbing. All his movements gradually started getting slower and slower. He appeared to get weaker and weaker, which he was. The violent emotions shown on his face became more subdued. He began to get lethargic. He slowly sank to the floor.
Download or read book Best of Covered Wagon Women written by Kenneth L. Holmes and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diaries and letters of women who braved the overland trails during the great nineteenth-century westward migration are treasured documents in the study of the American West. These eight firsthand accounts are among the best ever written. They were selected for the power with which they portray the hardship, adventure, and boundless love for friends and family that characterized the overland experience. Some were written with the skilled pens of educated women. Others bear the marks of crude cabin learning, with archaic and imaginative spelling and a simplicity of expression. All convey the profound effect the westward trek had on these women. For too long these diaries and letters were secreted away in attics and basements or collected dust on the shelves of manuscript collections across the country. Their publication gives us a fresh perspective on the pioneer experience.
