Book My little wish

Book excerpt: Porter was happy. There was nothing better than play time. He loved going to the park with his Mom on sunny afternoons. When he was at the park he got to run around and play with other children. Porter was a dwarf. At ten years old he stood only two feet tall. His mom, who stood at three feet and nine inches tall told him that he was taller than his father had been at his age. Whenever she said that it didn't make him feel all that much better. He just wanted to be a normal sized boy. He spent his free time wishing that he would suddenly grow. Life wasn't fair to a short person. He couldn't reach anything. Nothing in the entire world was set up to serve someone of his size. He couldn't go to the bathroom in public because the toilets were too tall and wide for him, even if he managed to make his way onto the seat he would promptly fall in. Whenever he went into stores he couldn't reach higher than the second shelf. His all-time favourite food was gummy bears but the grocery store his mom took him to had the gummy bears stored on the top shelf.

Book Church Boy Love

Download or read book Church Boy Love written by Dr Adrian D. Nelson and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever been in that chapter of your life where everything that could possibly go wrong does so you just want to curse God and die or you question if God even really exists? What would you do if you simply wanted to live the blessed life of a devoted Christian, to excel in school, to make your family proud, to find true love and live happily ever after yet everything came crashing down when evil interrupted? In the '80s, Street was a lost soul and once a devoted Christian teenage boy living in Jamaica; he backslid after a series of devastating life-changing events over the years led him to doubt and to create this bizarre test game in certain situations to have God or the devil prove their existence to him. The devil constantly did. He lost his faith and resorted to dancing to fill that void by forming a break dance group called the Street Boys. They became popular, and he became content. But it didn't last. With evil and trouble constantly tormenting him, the Street Boys eventually transitioned into a ruthless street gang to defend themselves against their rivals and enemies. But amidst all the street fights and mayhem that consumed him, he one day found solace-love in a Christian girl, which eventually led him back to Christ. Happy ending, you might think, but far from it! The twists, turns, and shockers that accompanied his new relationship with her led to more mayhem, bloodshed, and heartbreak-and even worse, an ending that no one ever saw coming or could have even predicted. This story is based on actual events.

Book It s a Boy

Download or read book It s a Boy written by Andrea J. Buchanan and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2009-03-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most popular question any pregnant woman is asked, aside from "When are you due?", has got to be "Are you having a girl or a boy?" When author Andrea Buchanan, already a mom to a little girl, was pregnant with her second child, she marveled at the response of friends and total strangers alike: "Boys are wonderful," "Boys are so much better than girls," "Boys love their mothers differently than girls." This constant refrain led her to explore the issue herself, with help from her fellow writers and moms, many of whom had had the same experience. The result is It's A Boy, a wide-ranging, often-humorous, and honest collection of essays about the experience of mothering boys. Taking on topics like aggression, parenting a teenage boy, and wishing for a daughter but getting a son, It's A Boy explores what it's like to mother sons and how that experience may be different, but no less satisfying, than mothering girls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Don’t say in the years to come that you would have lived your life differently if only you had heard this story. You’ve heard it now.” —Thomas King, in this volume Read, Listen, Tell brings together an extraordinary range of Indigenous stories from across Turtle Island (North America). From short fiction to as-told-to narratives, from illustrated stories to personal essays, these stories celebrate the strength of heritage and the liveliness of innovation. Ranging in tone from humorous to defiant to triumphant, the stories explore core concepts in Indigenous literary expression, such as the relations between land, language, and community, the variety of narrative forms, and the continuities between oral and written forms of expression. Rich in insight and bold in execution, the stories proclaim the diversity, vitality, and depth of Indigenous writing. Building on two decades of scholarly work to centre Indigenous knowledges and perspectives, the book transforms literary method while respecting and honouring Indigenous histories and peoples of these lands. It includes stories by acclaimed writers like Thomas King, Sherman Alexie, Paula Gunn Allen, and Eden Robinson, a new generation of emergent writers, and writers and storytellers who have often been excluded from the canon, such as French- and Spanish-language Indigenous authors, Indigenous authors from Mexico, Chicana/o authors, Indigenous-language authors, works in translation, and “lost“ or underappreciated texts. In a place and time when Indigenous people often have to contend with representations that marginalize or devalue their intellectual and cultural heritage, this collection is a testament to Indigenous resilience and creativity. It shows that the ways in which we read, listen, and tell play key roles in how we establish relationships with one another, and how we might share knowledges across cultures, languages, and social spaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Black immigrant journeys from the Caribbean to Canada—and through multiple musical personas—in a “deeply moving” memoir “suffused with poetic prose” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). As a clever, willful boy in a tiny village in the tropical forests of Trinidad—raised by his indomitable grandmother, Miss Excelly, and her King James Bible—Antonio Michael Downing is steeped in the legacies of his scattered family, the vibrant culture of the island, and the weight of its colonial history. But after Miss Excelly’s death, everything changes. The eleven-year-old seems to fall asleep in the jungle and wake up in a blizzard: he is sent to live with his devoutly evangelical Aunt Joan in rural Canada, where they are the only Black family in a landscape starkly devoid of the warm lushness of his childhood. Isolated and longing for home, Downing begins a decades-long journey to transform himself through music and performance. A reunion with his birth parents, whom he’s known only through story, closes more doors than it opens. Instead, Downing seeks refuge in increasingly extravagant musical personalities: “Mic Dainjah,” a boisterous punk rapper; “Molasses,” a soul crooner; and, finally, an eccentric dystopian-era pop star clad in leather and gold, “John Orpheus.” In his mid-thirties, increasingly addicted to escapism, attention, and sex, Downing realizes he has become a “Saga Boy”—a Trinidadian playboy archetype—like his father and grandfather before him. When his choices land him in a jail cell, Downing must face who he has become. “Lush language and sensory details make the fascinating events of this memoir pop. An authentic, entertaining, and timely account of a creative immigrant’s experiences.” —Booklist “Downing’s elegant, engaging memoir will have particular significance to readers from the Caribbean diaspora, but it will be understood by any reader who has ever had their world suddenly upended and needed to make it whole again.” —Library Journal “A rich memoir about how far some folks have to travel just to arrive where they began.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune
