Book excerpt: The epic true story of an extreme athlete, a stray dog, and how they found each other—now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Mark Walhberg and Simu Liu. “A miraculous tale.”—Washington Post “Like all great tales, this one had an intriguing start: a small good deed with enormous consequences for the dog and his rescuers, the basis for a heroic and heartwarming story.”—Forbes When you're racing 435 miles through the jungles and mountains of South America, the last thing you need is a stray dog tagging along. But that's exactly what happened to Mikael Lindnord, captain of a Swedish adventure racing team, when he threw a scruffy but dignified mongrel a meatball one afternoon. When the team left the next day, the dog followed. Try as they might, they couldn't lose him—and soon Mikael realized that he didn't want to. Crossing rivers, battling illness and injury, and struggling through some of the toughest terrain on the planet, the team and the dog walked, kayaked, cycled, and climbed together toward the finish line, where Mikael decided he would save the dog, now named Arthur, and bring him back to his family in Sweden, whatever it took. Illustrated with candid photographs, Arthur provides a testament to the amazing bond between dogs and people.

Book excerpt: Featured in the New York Times Book Review Summer Reading Guide * A Crime by the Book “Most Anticipated” Novel * Featured in the New York Post Summer Round Up * Starred Publishers Weekly Review * A Publishers Weekly “Big Summer Books” * A Kirkus Reviews “Creepy Thrillers” Pick In this pulse-pounding thriller from the author of the “haunting, twisting thrill ride” (Megan Miranda, New York Times bestselling author) The River at Night, a young woman leaves behind everything she knows to take on the Bolivian jungle, but her excursion abroad quickly turns into a fight for her life. Lily Bushwold thought she’d found the antidote to endless foster care and group homes: a teaching job in Cochabamba, Bolivia. As soon as she could steal enough cash for the plane, she was on it. When the gig falls through and Lily stays in Bolivia, she finds bonding with other broke, rudderless girls at the local hostel isn’t the life she wants either. Tired of hustling and already world-weary, crazy love finds her in the form she least expected: Omar, a savvy, handsome local man who’d abandoned his life as a hunter in Ayachero—a remote jungle village—to try his hand at city life. When Omar learns that a jaguar has killed his four-year-old nephew in Ayachero, he gives Lily a choice: Stay alone in the unforgiving city, or travel to the last in a string of ever-more-isolated river towns in the jungles of Bolivia. Thirty-foot anaconda? Puppy-sized spiders? Vengeful shamans with unspeakable powers? Love-struck Lily is oblivious. She follows Omar to this ruthless new world of lawless poachers, bullheaded missionaries, and desperate indigenous tribes driven to the brink of extinction. To survive, Lily must navigate the jungle--its wonders as well as its terrors—using only her wits and resilience. Primal, gripping, and terrifying, Into the Jungle features Erica Ferencik’s signature “visceral, white-knuckle” (Entertainment Weekly) prose that will sink its fangs into you and not let go.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helena Maria Viramontes brings 1960s Los Angeles to life with “terse, energetic, and vivid” (Publishers Weekly) prose in this story of a group of young Latinx women fighting to survive and thrive in a tumultuous world. Award-winning author of Under the Feet of Jesus, Helena María Viramontes offers a profoundly gritty portrait of everyday life in L.A. in this lyrically muscular, artfully crafted novel. In the barrio of East Los Angeles, a group of unbreakable young women struggle to find their way through the turbulent urban landscape of the 1960s. Androgynous Turtle is a homeless gang member. Ana devotes herself to a mentally ill brother. Ermila is a teenager poised between childhood and political consciousness. And Tranquilina, the daughter of missionaries, finds hope in faith. In prose that is potent and street tough, Viramontes has choreographed a tragic dance of death and rebirth. Julia Alvarez has called Viramontes "one of the important multicultural voices of American literature." Their Dogs Came with Them further proves the depth and talent of this essential author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you ever wonder what your dog is thinking? Reading Terriers in the Jungle by Georja Umano is like peering into the personal journals of Roxie and Romeo, two spunky and articulate stray dogs. The dogs ponder, philosophize and crack jokes as they express underlying feelings of loneliness, fear and love. We watch them transform from unwanted canines to beloved companions and pets. The two adore each other, their home, and their mom Kate. But Kate, being an ardent animal conservationist, decides the family will move to Kenya to help save endangered elephants. The dogs must now learn to survive in the midst of wildlife, dangerous people, and circumstances far from the American dogs' knowing. We experience their journey - as endearing as it is thrilling, as they adapt and grow, from the lonely streets of L.A. to the jungles of Africa. And we are privy to every canine nuance. -- Gabriel Dinda, Founder and Executive Director, Writers Guild-Kenya What a story! Speaks to the heart on all that matters. The author has managed to capture my attention from the beginning to the end.It is only when I finished reading that I realized I had learnt so much from the story. Brilliant! Morrie Ruvinsky, Author/producer Dream Keeper and Myth Quest Two very privileged and literate Jack Russells from Santa Monica go to Africa. What could possibly go wrong? Told by the dogs themselves, Romeo and Roxie spin a fanciful tale with a surprising bittersweet resolution. Can't wait to see what happens when Disney gets their hands on it. Cynthia Moss, Founder, Amboseli Trust for Elephants Elephants and dogs-two of my favorite things. Who wouldn't enjoy these charming tales told from the point of view of Romeo, the Jack Russell, rat terrier, chihuahua mix of mischief. Nikki Sharp, Executive Director, Wildlife SOS-USA Terriers in the Jungle is a novel that all animal lovers should add to their library. The story combines an African adventure with a message of conservation and humanity, all told through the lighthearted perspective of two rescued dogs. If you haven't already started on your journey to protecting elephants, you will once you've completed the book. Jane Gillis, Retired Special Collections Librarian, Beinecke Library, Yale University I really loved it. Roxie and Romeo are so different (just as people are so different ) and their personalities come across superbly. We also experience the care and love they have for each other. The illustrations are lovely and whimsical. Barbara Lovett, President, Save Nosey Now, Inc. I laughed and cried and did a lot of smiling. I love dogs, so hearing the story from their point of view was fun and endearing. The story was heartening and positive. It's powerful. Judy Carman, Author, Peace to All Beings: Veggie Soup for the Chicken's Soul Terriers in the Jungle is a wonderful revolutionary book that both entertains and raises important animal issues. It will help readers feel compassion and understanding for many animals. Ricarda Franco, Co-Founder, Dexter Foundation I just finished reading the book and it was wonderful. So touching and uplifting all at once. It made me happy and I cried a good bit too.

Download or read book Tigres of the Night written by Robert W. Howe and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-10-10 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tigres in the Night is the true story of Juan and Amalia Arcos. For almost sixty years they have been lay missionaries, and friends of the Shuar Indians (known to history as Jivaro, the "head-shrinkers of the Amazon"). The Shuar are a proud and were often a dangerous people who were famous for their vendettas, wars so violent that few men died a natural death. The shamans possessed "spirit arrows" they sent to kill enemies and roamed the night as tigres (jaguars), anacondas or deadly diseases. Experience the wonders and challenge of life in the Amazon rain forest. Book Review The life of an Amazonian tribal community is brilliantly brought to understanding by the writings of Robert W. Howe as he followed the true story of Juan and Amalia Arcos, lay-missionaries and naturalists living in the rainforests along the Amazon. In the mid 1900s Juan Arcos studied to become a priest under the direction of Father Peter Vosa, a man who had guided him for the past fifteen years of his life. With much prayer and careful consideration, Juan eventually decided not to become a priest. This decision was difficult for him, but God lead him to become a teaching missionary instead. He felt strongly that God wanted him to work with the local tribal people called the Shuar, because he had already learned their language as a child and felt connected on a spiritual level. Juan and Amalia's goal was committed to lead a life dedicated to God and His people, the Shuar. They are simple, humble [yet exceedingly proud, my note] people. Being once thought as violent, they are in fact generous givers, welcoming and kind. In Howe's book he describes how the Shuar talk with the dead [really the spirits, author again], balance the needs of their men and women, keep peace or wage war, practice the ancient art of shamanic journeying, and learn from the sacred teacher plants (ayahuasca, datura, chicha, and tobacco) and many more tribal customs. He provides a view into the lifestyle of a culture from another time, in a distant place, that lives within the Amazon jungle. "Tigres of the Night" really has some powerful messages that are most welcome at a time when we all need to feel a sense of strength, courage, healing, and love. While the book's vivid imagery invites us to experience the lush, tropical splendor of the Amazon Rain Forest, the real value lies in the rich wisdom imparted by the Shuar people. It is very appropriate to have a picture of a cascading waterfall on the front cover of this book. To the Shuar people, Waterfalls are sacred. If he needs strength, answers, or wisdom, a man will visit the waters in order to get in touch with his soul and find direction. Robert W. Howe's writing tells of indigenous wisdom, different ways of life, and is especially focused for those who are already missionaries or those who wonder if God may be calling them. This book would also be a great resource for your pastor and your church's library. He created a masterpiece that lives on in one's heart for a lifetime. For the Shuar, their homeland is a place of wondrous beauty and great danger. It's a place where anacondas lurk in the rivers and jaguars prowl at night. ""Tigres of the Night" is a book that tells their story. You will find that Tigres of the Night includes author's notes, an appendix and a bibliography for future reading. Reviewed by Nicole Sorkin
