This updated edition of Introducing Jung brilliantly explains the theories that underpin Jung's work, delves into the controversies that led him to break away from Freud and describes his near psychotic breakdown, from which he emerged with radical new insights into the nature of the unconscious mind – and which were published for the first time in 2009 in The Red Book. Step by step, Maggie Hyde demonstrates how it was entirely logical for him to explore the psychology of religion, alchemy, astrology, the I Ching and other phenomena rejected by science in his investigation of his patients' dreams, fantasies and psychic disturbances.

Book Romantic Metasubjectivity Through Schelling and Jung

Download or read book Romantic Metasubjectivity Through Schelling and Jung written by Gord Barentsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-08 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic Metasubjectivity Through Schelling and Jung: Rethinking the Romantic Subject explores the remarkable intellectual isomorphism between the philosophy of Friedrich Schelling and Carl Jung’s analytical psychology in order to offer a crucial and original corrective to the "reflection theory" of subjectivity. Arguing that the reflection theory of the subject does not do justice to the full compass of Romantic thinking about the human being, Romantic Metasubjectivity sees human identity as neither discursive aftereffect nor centred around a self-transparent "I" but rather as constellated around the centripetal force of what Novalis calls "The Self of one’s self." The author begins with a unique reading of Schelling’s early Naturphilosophie as primal site rather than Freudian scene, thinking this site through his Philosophical Inquiries Into the Nature of Human Freedom to The Ages of the World. Reading Jungian metapsychology and its core concepts as therapeutic amplifications of Schelling, the author articulates an intellectual counter-transference in which Schelling and Jung contemporise each other. The book then demonstrates how Romantic metasubjectivity operates in the libidinal matrix of Romantic poetry through readings of William Wordsworth’s The Prelude and Percy Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound. The book concludes with a discussion of the hit TV series Breaking Bad as a "case study" of the challenges Romantic metasubjectivity raises for fundamental ethical dilemmas which confront us in the twenty-first century. Romantic Metasubjectivity is a highly original work of scholarship and will appeal to students and scholars in German Idealism, Romanticism, philosophy, psychoanalysis, theory, Jung studies, and those with an interest in contemporary theories of the subject.

Book A Theatre of Meaning

Download or read book A Theatre of Meaning written by Kenneth Crawford and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most important conclusion we might draw from Jung is that Christ's work of redemption is not complete because it only reached consciousness. The coming of Christ meant that evil was repressed to the unconscious psyche from where it erupts in periodic bouts of conflict such as we saw in the last century. The archetypes of the collective unconscious that provide the framework of reality have no morality and it remains for the individual to fill the archetypes with their own meaning and moral direction or else they will have none, just alternating patterns of light and dark, Antichrist and redeemer, war and peace. How could one ever hope to approach such a task? Such is the subject of Jung's most important work. Jung deconstructed Christianity and alchemy, taking both back to its most psychologically important symbolic material, before putting the pieces back together again in an 'individuation process' that seeks to integrate the core archetypes, ultimately leading to the realisation of a transcendent Self. This brings a renewal of the Christ symbol in an individual symbol of the Self that integrates the unconscious psyche. The challenge for the reader is that Jung was writing in exploratory fashion and so individuation is not addressed in one place but rather dealt with piecemeal through the Collected Works, a large and intimidating body of work. Even so it is the definitive source where the reader must ultimately go to get the most from individuation. There is however a place for a bridging work that helps orientate the reader and set the scene. Such is the goal of this book. Having taken so much from Jung in my own life, it is my humble attempt to give something back. I use the concept of the theatre to take us into Jung because it has certain features that aid in understanding the structure of the psyche, and also a structure that can provide a more grounded and familiar context for the rest of Jung's work. The book includes a Foreword by Jacquie Flecknoe-Brown, a Jungian analyst and author of The Dreamer's Odyssey.
