Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2021 AMERICAN BOOK FEST BEST BOOK AWARD Fans of Caroline Leavitt will relish this rich, complex novel born of the author's own loss and grief, about how one can overcome tragedy through bravery and self-discovery. Cassidy Morgan's life has always followed a carefully laid track: top education, fulfilling career, and marriage to the love of her life, Owen. The next logical step was starting a family. But when a late-term miscarriage threatens to derail everything she's worked so hard for, she finds herself questioning her identity, particularly what it means to be a mother. Unable to move past her guilt and shame, she realizes there's more to fix than a broken heart. Grief illuminates the weaknesses in her marriage and forces her to deal with her tumultuous relationship with her own mother. Cassidy hopes her work as a veterinarian specializing in equine reproduction will distract her from the pain but instead finds that one of the cases she's working on shines a spotlight on the memory of her unborn son. For once in her life, Cassidy is left untethered and wondering why she wanted to become a mother in the first place. Then the unexpected happens when Cassidy becomes pregnant again. But the joy over her baby is tempered by her fear of another loss as well as her increasingly troubled marriage. Now, she must decide whether to let her pain hold her back or trust that there's still something to live for. What We Carry is a thought-provoking response to the author's own miscarriage and lack of fiction surrounding the topic, that she and other women in her situation crave.

Download or read book We Flew over the Bridge written by Faith Ringgold and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In We Flew over the Bridge, one of the country’s preeminent African American artists—and award-winning children’s book authors—shares the fascinating story of her life. Faith Ringgold’s artworks—startling “story quilts,” politically charged paintings, and more—hang in the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and other major museums around the world, as well as in the private collections of Maya Angelou, Bill Cosby, and Oprah Winfrey. Her children’s books, including the Caldecott Honor Book Tar Beach, have sold hundreds of thousands of copies. But Ringgold’s path to success has not been easy. In this gorgeously illustrated memoir, she looks back and shares the story of her struggles, growth, and triumphs. Ringgold recollects how she had to surmount a wall of prejudices as she worked to refine her artistic vision and raise a family. At the same time, the story she tells is one of warm family memories and sustaining friendships, community involvement, and hope for the future.

Book DOG WARS

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tia Greenfield
  • Publisher : Author House
  • Release : 2014-04
  • ISBN : 1491821574
  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book DOG WARS written by Tia Greenfield and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aw, a new puppy! How sweet! How precious and adorable! How wrong! Little Ozzy turns out to be the monster that destroys a family's peace and harmony. Or does he? The whole situation is so complex, and the run-up to the Dog War so fraught with complications, that it is completely unreasonable to conclude that it began with any one event - not even the arrival of Ozzy on that fateful day in April. It makes no sense to see the Dog War as an isolated episode, and once it really exploded, it stirred up a lot of old feelings and memories, recollections and resentments that perhaps would have been better forgotten. The Dog War was just a scrimmage in a much larger and longer running series of conflicts. And while the history of the Dog Wars is a story of conflict, it is also a story of victory. Although it is a story of struggle, it is a story of triumph too.

Book The Moose Club

Download or read book The Moose Club written by Jerry Caple and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is entirely fictional; none of the characters are real and any resemblance to anyone is purely accidental. However, many of the events, lakes, and places are real and many descriptions do come from events that have happened. A group of youngsters formed a club in the 1990s—the Gunflint Narrows Moose Club—with a written constitution as well. They had their own adventures on the trail, but this story is about the friendships and adventures of a group of children spending their summers and vacations learning the values of protecting our natural resources. One of the original Moose Club members is now on the board of the “Friends of the Boundary Waters,” and another is a professional photographer. About the Author Gerald (Jerry) Caple grew up in International Falls, Minnesota. He is a retired chemistry professor who currently spends the summers on Gunflint Lake (half in Canada) and the winters in Tucson. He is active in collecting water quality data and water samples for testing by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Cook County Soil and Water Group. Jerry Caple has represented Gunflint Lake in the Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations and has been a member of the Community Advisory Group associated with the International Joint Commission, which is responsible for water quality in the Boundary Waters. This work involved meetings in International Falls, Kenora and Fort Frances, the latter two in Canada. His hobbies include fishing, hiking, canoeing, and painting. He has made about 60 hikes into the Grand Canyon, of course to fish. He still catches some walleyes from his canoe. Jerry Caple wishes to thank everyone who helped him with this project and the encouragement given to him by the Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations. Special thanks to his daughter, Shelly Anderson, who helped with the text and publishing.
