Book The Missal of Robert of Jumi ges

Download or read book The Missal of Robert of Jumi ges written by Catholic Church and published by . This book was released on 1896 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The `Missal of Robert of Jumièges' is one of the most important, and also most beautifully written and decorated, service books which have survived from the late Anglo-Saxon period. Probably written at Canterbury in the early years of the eleventh century, it eventually came into the possession of Robert, bishop of London (1044-51), who gave it to the abbey of Jumièges in France, where it remained until 1791. From a liturgical point of view, the manuscript is notable for the large number of masses commemorating not only native English, but also continental, and particularly Flemish, saints culted in late Anglo-Saxon England; the book is thus an important witness to the cultural links between England and the Continent at that time. The text, first published in 1896, has a still-valuable introduction by its editor and is accompanied by fifteen black and white plates, which give some impression of the original, lavish decoration. There are also full indexes of liturgical forms and subjects.

  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Writing Normandy written by Felice Lifshitz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing Normandy brings together eighteen articles by historian Felice Lifshitz, some of which are published here for the first time. The articles examine the various ways in which local and regional narratives about the past were created and revised in Normandy during the central Middle Ages. These narratives are analyzed through a combination of both cultural studies and manuscript studies in order to assess how they functioned, who they benefitted, and the various contexts in which they were transmitted. The essays pay particular attention to the narratives built around venerated saints and secular rulers, and in doing so bring together narratives that have traditionally been discussed separately by scholars. The book will appeal to scholars and students of cultural history and medieval history, as well as those interested in manuscript studies. (CS1095)

Book A Short History of the Normans

Download or read book A Short History of the Normans written by Leonie V. Hicks and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Hastings in 1066 is the one date forever seared on the British national psyche. It enabled the Norman Conquest that marked the end of Anglo-Saxon England. But there was much more to the Normans than the invading army Duke William shipped over from Normandy to the shores of Sussex. How a band of marauding warriors established some of the most powerful dominions in Europe - in Sicily and France, as well as England - is an improbably romantic idea. In exploring Norman culture in all its regions, Leonie V Hicks is able to place the Normans in the full context of early medieval society. Her wide ranging comparative perspective enables the Norman story to be told in full, so that the societies of Rollo, William, Robert (Guiscard) and Roger are given the focused attention they deserve. From Hastings to the martial exploits of Bohemond and Tancred on the First Crusade; from castles and keeps to Romanesque cathedrals; and from the founding of the Kingdom of Sicily (1130) to cross-cultural encounters with Byzantines and Muslims, this is a fresh and lively survey of one of the most popular topics in European history.

Download or read book The Cult of St Katherine of Alexandria in Early Medieval Europe written by Christine Walsh and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Katherine of Alexandria was one of the most popular saints in both the Orthodox and Latin Churches in the later Middle Ages, yet there has been little study into the way in which her cult developed before c. 1200. This new book redresses the balance, providing a thorough examination of the way the cult spread from the Greek-speaking lands of the Eastern Mediterranean and into Western Europe.
