Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedy of Julius Caesar It is scarcely an exaggeration to say that the whole' play of Julius Caesar is to be found in Plutarch. Shakespeare, indeed, has thrown a rich mantle of poetry over all, which is often wholly his own; but of the incident there is almost nothing which he does not owe to Plutarch, even as continu ally he owes the very wording to Sir Thomas North. Yet Shakespeare never abdicates his royal preeminence. Thus Plutarch tells us of that funeral oration by Mark Antony, how to conclude his ora tion he unfolded before the whole assembly the bloody garments of the dead, thrust through in many places with their swords, and called the malefactors cruel and cursed murtherers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere's Julius Caesar The text of this edition of Julius Caesar is founded on that of the Cambridge Shakspere the very few changes that occur have been made only after due consideration, and are hardly important enough to warrant mention. Those familiar with the various editions of the play will recognise the indebtedness of the present editor for many of. The notes that accompany the text, -an indebt edness herewith acknowledged once and for all. The aim of this edition, as is stated elsewhere, is to help the young student in his first serious reading of a Shaksperian drama. For this student the introduction and the notes were prepared, and for his sake much in formation was included that a riper scholarship would find unnecessary and even tedious. The editor has suc ceeded in his task just so far as he has been able to put himself in the place of an instructor trying to interest the average class of young people in the study of one of Shakspere's best known and best liked plays. Book The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar The notes appended to these pages will be found few in comparison with the noteworthy points. There are not many lines of Shakespeare that do not furnish occasion for some sort of comment. Teachers will use their discretion as to the time they shall linger over any given matter. A good rule is to dwell upon passages so long as the pupil's interest does not flag. I have found in my own classes that it is possible 'to advance rapidly, even through matter abounding in difficulties, by distributing the items of research among the individuals of a class. The most shaming kind of recitation is that to which each pupil brings his own preparation, unlike that of any other. To such a recitation all listen with eagerness. In my annotation, as often as it seemed feasible, I have referred the student, for light on special points, to other pas sages in the poet's works. The habit of seeking explana tions of Shakespearian difficulties in Shakespeare himself is of the very first importance. It has seemed to me also de sirable to familiarize the learner in this way with the plays at large, even though it be only to such extent as is implied in turning the leaves and searching for passages and words. These references are to the Globe Shakespeare, published by Macmillan Co. As this book has come to be almost universally recognized by Shakespeare scholars as a stand ard for purposes of reference, and is exceedingly cheap, it may be named as the first requisite among collateral helps for the study of the poet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Julius Caesar: A Study E never see the world as it is. It takes the colour and mould of our own souls. Complete realism is impossible. For that which we see is ever tinged by that with which we see. Our medium is for us creative. Hence we are for ever seeing change, even when change there is none; nature moves with us like our shadow; and human nature, changeable though it is, becomes besides fickle with our moods. Were nature moveless as her rocks, still would she seem to follow our transformations, as we pass from gloom to sunshine, from twilight to deep night. The strong spirit is omnipotent over its own happiness or woe; for it can see the gleaming sunlight behind the darkest cloud. The weak heart lets itself be crushed not by its sur roundings, but by its own tears and gloom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
