Download or read book Sanctioned Ignorance written by Paul Martin and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is no such thing as 'the ivory tower.' Rather, there sit side by side numerous windowless towers of knowledge, each seeming to have only a small entrance and no discernable exit." -Paul Martin Multilingual, multicultural, and vast, Canada enjoys a rich diversity of literatures. So, why does "Canadian Literature," as it has been taught, fail to encompass a common geography, history, and government, yet reveal the diverse experiences of its immigrants, long-term residents, and original peoples? Martin's research-interviews with 95 professors in 27 universities-maps the institutional chasms in communication and the nature of their persistence. His own example of venturing out from his "tower" to dialogue with colleagues shows a way toward cultivating a conception of the literatures of Canada that is expansive and inclusive. Canadianists, professors of English, French, Postcolonial and Comparative Literatures, and leaders in education will profit from Martin's frank investigations.

Download or read book Windows and Words written by Susan-Ann Cooper and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Windows and Words is a collection of seventeen essays that confirms and celebrates the artistry of Canadian Children's Literature. There are essays that survey a wealth of English language fiction, from the internationally acclaimed work of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the aboriginal adolescent novel, to the increasingly multi-cultural character of children's books. Others examine book illustration, visual literacy, and the creative partnership seen in the picture book and its art design. With contributions by two Governor General's Award winning authors, Janet Lunn and Tim Wynne-Jones, and a final commentary by Elizabeth Waterson, the heart of this collection offers a unique perspective on the artistry of writing for children and claims a rightful place for Canadian children's literature as literature.

Download or read book Sustainable Revolution written by Juliana Birnbaum and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban gardeners. Native seed-saving collectives. Ecovillage developments. What is the connection between these seemingly disparate groups? The ecological design system of permaculture is the common thread that weaves them into a powerful, potentially revolutionary—or reevolutionary—movement. Permaculture is a philosophy based on common ethics of sustainable cultures throughout history that have designed settlements according to nature's patterns and lived within its bounds. As a movement that has been building momentum for the past 40 years, it now is taking form as a growing network of sites developed with the intention of regenerating local ecologies and economies. Permaculture strategies can be used by individuals, groups, or nations to address basic human needs such as food, water, energy, and housing. As a species, humans are being called forth to evolve, using our collective intelligence to meet the challenges of the future. Yet if we are to survive our collective planetary crisis, we need to revisit history, integrating successful systems from sustainable cultures. To boldly confront our position on the brink of the earth's carrying capacity and make changes that incorporate the wisdom of the past is truly revolutionary. Sustainable Revolution features the work of a worldwide network of visionaries, including journalists, activists, indigenous leaders and permaculturists such as David Holmgren, Vandana Shiva, Charles Eisenstein, Starhawk, Erik Assadourian, Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, Albert Bates, and Geoff Lawton. This beautifully photographed collection of profiles, interviews, and essays features 60 innovative community-based projects in diverse climates across the planet. Edited by anthropologist Juliana Birnbaum Fox and award-winning activist filmmaker Louis Fox, it can be read as an informal ethnography of an international culture that is modeling solutions on the cutting edge of social and environmental change. The research presented in the book frames the permaculture movement as a significant ally to marginalized groups, such as the urban poor and native communities resisting the pressures of globalization. Sustainable Revolution uplifts and inspires with its amazing array of dynamic activists and thriving, vibrant communities.

Download or read book Fatty Acids and Cardiometabolic Health written by Jason Wu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of fat intake on hypercholesterolemia and related atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases has been studied for decades. However, the current evidence base suggests that fatty acids also influences cardiometabolic diseases through other mechanisms including effects on glucose metabolism, body fat distribution, blood pressure, inflammation, and heart rate. Furthermore, studies evaluating single fatty acids have challenged the simplistic view of shared health effects within fatty acid groups categorized by degree of saturation. In addition, investigations of endogenous fatty acid metabolism, including genetic studies of fatty acid metabolizing enzymes, and the identification of novel metabolically derived fatty acids have further increased the complexity of fatty acids’ health impacts. This Special Issue aims to include original research and up-to-date reviews on genetic and dietary modulation of fatty acids, and the role and function of dietary and metabolically derived fatty acids in cardiometabolic health.
