Book excerpt: Internationally acclaimed as one of the most resourceful and engaging younger artists in Britain, Julian Opie has been exhibiting his diverse work since the early 1980s, and has steadily gained a reputation stretching from Europe to Japan and the United States. He first established himself with painted steel sculptures of ordinary objects - typewriters, books, food, luggage - and of Old Master canvases. Since then, he has worked in a proliferation of styles: colourful abstract sculptures; mysteriously pseudo-functional objects resembling air vents, light boxes and lavatory cubicles; space-filling wood constructions with cryptic titles. His latest pieces feature subjects from austere acrylic paintings and concrete models of motorways to miniature houses, castles and fortifications.

Book excerpt: Celebrated artist and influential teacher Michael Craig-Martin's first book is a lively mix of reminiscence, personal manifesto, anecdote and advice for the aspiring artist in a new paperback edition Few living artists can claim to have had the influence of Michael Craig-Martin. Celebrated around the world for his distinctive work, and with major retrospectives, high-profile commissions and numerous honours to his name, he has also helped nurture generations of younger artists, among them Julian Opie, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Liam Gillick and Gary Hume. Often described as the godfather of the YBAs, he taught by combining personal example and individual guidance, offering students encouragement, practical advice and insights gained from his own professional highs and lows. This powerful combination gave them the self-knowledge, confidence and motivation to flourish as some of the most successful figures in contemporary art. Now Craig-Martin shares the same benefit of his experiences with yet another generation. Part memoir and part instructional guide, On Being An Artist is a remarkable mix of reminiscence, personal philosophy, anecdote, self-examination, and advice for the budding artist. In a series of short episodes, he reflects with both wit and candour on the many ideas, events and people that have inspired and shaped him throughout his life, from his childhood in the postwar United States through his time as an art student at Yale in the 1960s and subsequent work as a teacher, to his international success in later years. More than the life of one of the most creative minds of our age, On Being An Artist provides lesson after valuable lesson to anyone wishing to know what it means and what it takes to be an artist today.

  • Author : Katherine Thomson-Jones
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 0197567614
  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book Image in the Making written by Katherine Thomson-Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings have always made images, and to do so they have developed and refined an enormous range of artistic tools and materials. With the development of digital technology, the ways of making images - whether they are still or moving, 2D or 3D - have evolved at an unprecedented rate. At every stage of image making, artists now face a choice between using analog and using digital tools. Yet a digital image need not look digital; and likewise, a hand-made image or traditional photograph need not look analog. If we do not see the artist's choice between the analog and the digital, what difference can this choice make for our appreciation of images in the digital age? Image in the Making answers this question by accounting for the fundamental distinction between the analog and the digital; by explicating the technological realization of this distinction in image-making practice; and by exploring the creative possibilities that are distinctive of the digital. Katherine Thomson-Jones makes the case for a new kind of appreciation in the digital age. In appreciating the images involved in every digital art form - from digital video installation to net art to digital cinema - there is a basic truth that we cannot ignore: The nature and technology of the digital expands both what an image can be as an image and what an image can be for us as human beings.
