Book excerpt: When Marl Judson, fleeing a rapacious government that wanted not just his fabulous wealth but his life, crash-landed on a uninhabited planet, he thought he was marooned without hope of rescue, so he prepared himself to live out his remaining years as best he could amidst the planet's weird hallucinogenic flora. But head-twistting flowers (which Judson learned to avoid) were only part of the planet's weirdness: it was possessed of some sort of field effect which made time play strange tricks; temporal anomalies sometimes resulted in cause preceding effect and bizarre compressions and expansions of the normal pace of events. In such an environment time had no meaning; has Jusdson lived centuries alone, or only decades? Or is it years? Or all of the above? He doesn't quite know, but when another ship crashes the strange time effects allow(ed) him to conduct an experiment aimed at producing a perfect society, a veritable Judson's Eden. The the Snake arrives in the form of the government that marooned him - and the Snake wants Judson's Eden for itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a work of historical and cultural significance. Adoniram Judson was the first American missionary to Burma over 100 years ago. This book is not about him. This book is about the intrepid women who worked by his side. Written by Arabella Stuart at a time when women were just beginning to be recognized as writers in Western society, this book is about the Lives of three courageous and selfless women: Mrs. Ann H. Judson, Mrs. Sarah B. Judson and Mrs. Emily C. Judson. These three were all married in succession to Adoniram Judson, and they were all, in their own right, among the earliest missionaries to Burma. This is a book of love -- of commitment to a cause greater in importance than any personal sacrifice. At times gentle and at turns hair-raising, this is a thrilling story of three women who are examples to each one of us, men and women alike.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes the differences in content, reader expectation, and social/moral/ethical functions of the three types of novels in America of the 1950s. It challenges the notion that highbrow novels (Lolita ) do important cultural work while popular novels contribute to personal and social decay, and examines how time periods influence the moral content of novels. The book separates popular fiction into lowbrow (Peyton Place ) and middlebrow (Man in the Grey Flannel Suit ) and explains that lowbrow (like highbrow) evolves from the folklore tradition and contains messages about how to be a good man or good woman and how to find a satisfying niche in the social order. Middlebrow, on the other hand, evolves from myth tradition and relates lessons on what personal adjustments need to be made to succeed in the economic order. Middlebrow novels most reflect the time and place of their writing because conditions for economic survival change more than conditions for social survival. Arguing that what most distinguishes highbrow from lowbrow is the audience, highbrow writers try to separate from the flock; lowbrow writers to include. This study differs from such well-known studies of popular fiction as John Cawelti's and Janice Radway's in looking beyond the surface features of plot, character, and theme. The book also challenges arguments that novels in which marriage is women's highest triumph and aggressive heroism men's reinforce limiting cultural paradigms.

Now that courageous act could cost him his pending marriage and his reputation. The Hawaii of 1891 is not untamed as it was when the first missionaries arrived, but the dangers haven't disappeared. Power, wealth, and ambition still drive the affairs of the island life, and Rafe Easton is poised to win big on all three--except for one thing. The woman he loves is walking away from their promise of life together on account of a baby boy . . . and the forsaken people of the island he came from. For her part, Eden Derrington must choose between her father's lifelong dream of curing leprosy, and a life of privilege with the man she's loved since childhood. Will Rafe wait for her while she serves alongside her father? And what if she herself falls victim to the dreaded disease that took her mother many years ago? Set against the backdrop of tropical paradise, revolutionary intrigue, hidden motives, and deadly secrets, The Spoils of Eden sheds light on Hawaii's colonial era and the men and women whose sacrifices yielded such unexpected results.
