Book Mammalian Fauna of the Judith River Formation Late Cretaceous Judithian Northcentral Montana

Download or read book Mammalian Fauna of the Judith River Formation Late Cretaceous Judithian Northcentral Montana written by Marisol Montellano and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1992-07-15 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 12 million years before the extinction of the dinosaurs, a diverse terrestrial fauna inhabited what is now northcentral Montana. The author describes and evaluates the systematic relationships of the large mammalian fauna of this area, which included rodent-like multituberculates, primitive therians, marsupials, and early eutherian mammals, and also analyzes the biogeography of mammalian faunas of the Judithian age.

Book The Vertebrate Fauna of the Judith River Formation Montana

Download or read book The Vertebrate Fauna of the Judith River Formation Montana written by Ashok Sahni and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Geologic investigation of the late Cretaceous Judith River Formation in the area just north of the Judith River on the Missouri River in north-central Montana has resulted in the discovery of varied vertebrate forms. The beds are mainly freshwater continental deposits consisting of crossbedded channel sandstones, gray siltstones, and carbonaceous shales with occasional seams of lignitic coal. The stratigraphic sequence consists of the Marias River Shale overlain by the Eagle, Claggett, Judith River, and Bearpaw formations. The last four constitute Montana Group. The Judith River Formation is Campanian in age as determined by its position between the fossiliferous marine Claggett and Bearpaw shales. The fauna was obtained from the upper 50 feet of the formation. The bone concentration in the productive sandstone is the result of size sorting leading to underrepresentation of the larger dinosaurs. Three orders of mammals are represented, the Eutheria by a single genus, the Allotheria by five, and the Metatheria by at least three genera. Teiid and parasaniwid lizards are frequent. Only a fraction of the large number of described dinosaur genera, however, is represented in the collection by isolated teeth. Fish and amphibians form a sizable portion of the fauna. Vertebrates from the Judith River Formation are more primitive than, but generally similar to, later Maestrichtian species. The mammals differ from their descendants in the Lance Formation at the species level. The community structure and the paleoecology of the fauna of the Judith River Formation resemble those of the Lance Formation. The greatest difference between the two communities is the greater variety of dinosaurs in the earlier formation"--P. 325.

Book Tyrannosaurid Paleobiology

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Michael Parrish
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2013-07-05
  • ISBN : 0253009472
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Tyrannosaurid Paleobiology written by J. Michael Parrish and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from a 2005 international symposium, these essays explore current tyrannosaurid current research and discoveries regarding Tyrannosaurus rex. The opening of an exhibit focused on “Jane,” a beautifully preserved tyrannosaur collected by the Burpee Museum of Natural History, was the occasion for an international symposium on tyrannosaur paleobiology. This volume, drawn from the symposium, includes studies of the tyrannosaurids Chingkankousaurus fragilis and “Sir William” and the generic status of Nanotyrannus; theropod teeth, pedal proportions, brain size, and craniocervical function; soft tissue reconstruction, including that of “Jane”; paleopathology and tyrannosaurid claws; dating the “Jane” site; and tyrannosaur feeding and hunting strategies. Tyrannosaurid Paleobiology highlights the far ranging and vital state of current tyrannosaurid dinosaur research and discovery. “Despite being discovered over 100 years ago, Tyrannosaurus rex and its kin still inspire researchers to ask fundamental questions about what the best known dinosaur was like as a living, breathing animal. Tyrannosaurid Paleobiology present a series of wide-ranging and innovative studies that cover diverse topics such as how tyrannosaurs attacked and dismembered prey, the shapes and sizes of feet and brains, and what sorts of injuries individuals sustained and lived with. There are also examinations of the diversity of tyrannosaurs, determinations of exactly when different kinds lived and died, and what goes into making a museum exhibit featuring tyrannosaurs. This volume clearly shows that there is much more to the study of dinosaurs than just digging up and cataloguing old bones.” —Donald M. Henderson, Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology
