In each historical segment there is an assessment of the primary extant sources; a survey of the major interpretative issues; a synthesis of the history; and a bibliography of modern works. Grabbes account of Judaism in the beginning of Christianity is an ideal presentation for anyone who wants to learn by doing, because he provides a reliable and accurate account of the sources, the problems, and the range of scholarly opinions. The presentation then leaves open to the reader the opportunity to think things through in a fresh and independent way. To call the book the best textbook on its subject limits the appeal, since anyone, student or otherwise, who wants to participate in the life of learning on the formative age of Western civilization will appreciate what Grabbe has made possible: direct access to the state of the question, sources and scholarship alike' (Jacob Neusner).

This book was released on 2006-07-27 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first of four volumes on A History of the Jews and Judaism in the Second Temple Period, Lester Grabbe presents a comprehensive history of Yehud - the Aramaic name for Judah - during the Persian Period. Among the many crucial questions he addresses are: What are the sources for this period and how do we evaluate them? And how do we make them 'speak' to us through the fog of centuries? This first volume, Yehud: A History of the Persian Province of Judah offers the most up to date and comprehensive examination of the political and administrative structures; the society and economy; the religion, temple and cult; the developments in thought and literature; and the major political events of Judah at the time.

Book Judaism in Late Antiquity

Download or read book Judaism in Late Antiquity written by Jacob Neusner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2001 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob Neusner (vols. 1, 2, and 3) and his colleagues Alan Avery-Peck (vol. 2) and Bruce Chilton (vol. 3) have assembled a stellar team of scholars in producing what has already become an essential reference work for the study of Judaism in Late Antiquity. Originally written in nine separate volumes, Judaism in Late Antiquity now appears, unabridged, in three. The entire work seeks to offer readers both a broad perspective on the shape of Judaism while also opening the way to understanding unique issues. Editors Neusner, Avery-Peck, and Chilton must be commended for this generous gift both to the scholarly guild and to the general reader looking for a thought-provoking overview of the central academic conversations. "Judaism in Late Antiquity, I, II, III" is also available in hardback

Book A History of the Jewish People During the Babylonian Persian and Greek Periods

Excerpt: ...rejoice, for, after more than two centuries of shame and discouragement, the Jews again could securely dwell under the shadow of their temple and sing: Our feet are standing within thy gates, 0 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art builded as a city that is compact together. The subsequent development of Judaism rested upon the noble work of the great layman. Truly did Jesus the son of Sirach declare: The memorial of Nehemiah is great; Who raised up for us the walls that were fallen, And set up the gates and bars, And raised up our homes again.2 1 Ps. cxxii. 2, 3. 2 Ecclus. xlix. 13. vm PRELIMINARY REFORM MEASURES 171. The importance of the rebuilding of the walls and of the repopulation of Jerusalem cannot be overestimated, for without this preliminary work the political and religious future of the Jewish colony was almost hopeless. A fundamental reform in the character and practices of the community was still absolutely demanded before it could worthily represent either the Jewish race as a whole or the Jehovah which it formally acknowledged (compare sects. 150 to 154). With the exception of the faithful few, the sweeping charge of one of their prophets was true; the members of the little state were thoroughly depraved (Isa. lix. 1-8). Prophets were still found to denounce existing evils and to urge reform; but apparently they were obliged to shield themselves from malignant persecution behind anonymous writings. Many of the righteous were cherishing in secret the hope that Jehovah would speedily send his messenger of the covenant, who would suddenly come to the temple to purify, as with a refiner's fire and fuller's soap, the sons of Levi and the services of the sanctuary, and many were even hoping that Jehovah himself would appear to condemn...

Book Essays on Judaism in the Pre Hellenistic Period

Download or read book Essays on Judaism in the Pre Hellenistic Period written by Joseph Blenkinsopp and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays deal with developments during the period from the liquidation of the Judean state to the conquests of Alexander the Great. This was a critical time in the Near East and the Mediterranean world in general. It marked the end of the great Semitic empires until the rise of Islam in the seventh century A.D.,decisive changes in religion, with appeal to a creator-deity in Deutero-Isaiah, Babylonian Marduk cult, and Zoroastrianism. For the survivors of the Babylonian conquest in a post-collapse society the issue of continuity, with different groups claiming continuity with the past and possession of the traditions, there developed a situation favourable to the emergence of sects. The most pressing question, however, was what to do faced with the overwhelming power of empire, first Babylonian, then Persian. Finally, with the extinction of the native dynasty and the entire apparatus of a nation-state, the temple became the focus and emblem of group identity.

Book The Emergence of Yehud in the Persian Period

Download or read book The Emergence of Yehud in the Persian Period written by Charles E. Carter and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long-awaited and much-needed comprehensive analysis of the material evidence concerning Persian-period Judah. Carter analyses the settlement pattern and population distribution of the province, using both excavations and archaeological surveys. His meticulous examination arrives at a rather low estimate of the population during this period, on the basis of which he examines Yehud's socio-economic setting and considers the implications of a small Yehud for some of the prominent theories concerning the province in the Persian-period.
