Book Digital Modernism

Download or read book Digital Modernism written by Jessica Pressman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Modernism examines how and why some of the most innovative works of online electronic literature adapt and allude to literary modernism. Digital literature has been celebrated as a postmodern form that grows out of contemporary technologies, subjectivities, and aesthetics, but this book provides an alternative genealogy. Exemplary cases show electronic literature looking back to modernism for inspiration and source material (in content, form, and ideology) through which to critique contemporary culture. In so doing, this literature renews and reframes, rather than rejects, a literary tradition that it also reconfigures to center around media. To support her argument, Pressman pairs modernist works by Pound, Joyce, and Bob Brown, with major digital works like William Poundstone's "Project for the Tachistoscope: [Bottomless Pit]" (2005), Young-hae Chang Heavy Industries's Dakota, and Judd Morrissey's The Jew's Daughter. With each pairing, she demonstrates how the modernist movement of the 1920s and 1930s laid the groundwork for the innovations of electronic literature. In sum, the study situates contemporary digital literature in a literary genealogy in ways that rewrite literary history and reflect back on literature's past, modernism in particular, to illuminate the crucial role that media played in shaping the ambitions and practices of that period.

Book excerpt: "Film tourism-travel associated with a movie or television show-is big business. Whether it is a filming location such as the Game of Thrones set in Northern Ireland, a newly-created themed area like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, or the myriad of "pop-ups" that have become part of television marketing such as FriendsFest and The Seinfeld Experience, film tourism is booming. In Placing Fandom, Abby Waysdorf presents an in-depth investigation of contemporary film tourism, drawing on both fan studies and tourism studies perspectives. Its overall focus is on the tourist experience, building on previous research in that direction, but with a stronger focus on the relationship that tourists have with what they are traveling to visit. It asks, what role do film-related places play in contemporary fandom? By looking at film tourism from both the perspective of the tourist and the effects of this experience on broader fan ecologies, Waysdorf presents a more holistic understanding of film tourism today, looking at not only its appeal and meaning to tourists, but considering the structures that underlie it as it becomes a recognized, and potentially lucrative, part of contemporary fandom. Incorporating dozens of fan interviews, Placing Fandom provides case studies of today's biggest fandoms and the sites they frequent. The monograph is set apart by its comparative approach that engages with multiple forms of film tourism, from filming locations to simulated locations, frequent visitors to one-off tourists, and at the same time presents a new overarching theoretical framework for the practice"--

Book Globalization and Literature

Download or read book Globalization and Literature written by Suman Gupta and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a state-of-the-art overview of the relationship between globalization studies and literature and literary studies, and the bearing that they have on each other. It engages with the manner in which globalization is thematized in literary works, examines the relationship between globalization theory and literary theory, and discusses the impact of globalization processes on the production and reception of literary texts. Suman Gupta argues that, while literature has registered globalization processes in relevant ways, there has been a missed articulation between globalization studies and literary studies. Examples are given of some of the ways in which this slippage is now being addressed and may be taken forward, taking up such themes as the manner in which anti-globalization protests and world cities have figured in literary works; the ways in which theories of postmodernism and postcolonialism, familiar in literary studies, have diverged from and converged with globalization studies; and how industries to do with the circulation of literature are becoming globalized. This book is intended for university-level students and teachers, researchers, and other informed readers with an interest in the above issues, and serves as both a survey of the field and an intervention within it.

Book excerpt: There is a rigour and a set of seemingly limitless practical and theoretical demands involved with JoyceMedia that make it a difficult proposition for those more used to the "method" of applying theories that have already been worked out elsewhere. It is arguable, indeed, that after deconstruction, the fusion of genetics and hypertext represents the first major theoretical discourse to have emerged directly out of an engagement with Joyce's texts. If this is truly the case, then there is every reason to consider that this volume-however tardy its arrival must seem to those who first heard news of it ten years ago-remains nonetheless "in advance" of itself, and that its "news" is, in fact, still to be received.
