Book Uncovering the Logic of English A Common Sense Solution to America s Literacy Crisis

Download or read book Uncovering the Logic of English A Common Sense Solution to America s Literacy Crisis written by Denise Eide and published by Logic of English, Inc. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "English is so illogical!" It is generally believed that English is a language of exceptions. For many, learning to spell and read is frustrating. For some, it is impossible... especially for the 29% of Americans who are functionally illiterate. But what if the problem is not the language itself, but the rules we were taught? What if we could see the complexity of English as a powerful tool rather than a hindrance? --Denise Eide Uncovering the Logic of English challenges the notion that English is illogical by systematically explaining English spelling and answering questions like "Why is there a silent final E in have, large, and house?" and "Why is discussion spelled with -sion rather than -tion?" With easy-to-read examples and anecdotes, this book describes: - the phonograms and spelling rules which explain 98% of English words - how English words are formed and how this knowledge can revolutionize vocabulary development - how understanding the reasons behind English spelling prevents students from needing to guess The author's inspiring commentary makes a compelling case that understanding the logic of English could transform literacy education and help solve America's literacy crisis. Thorough and filled with the latest linguistic and reading research, Uncovering the Logic of English demonstrates why this systematic approach should be as foundational to our education as 1+1=2.

Book Literacy Reframe

Download or read book Literacy Reframe written by Robin Fogarty and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For decades, the education system has poured time, money, and effort into helping young students learn to read well, but nearly every attempt at reforming literacy among the youth has failed. So instead of reforming, why not reframe? Literacy Reframed seeks to reframe literacy in the education system by removing the current obsession with examinations and skill work. Instead, authors Robin J. Fogarty, Gene M. Kerns, and Brian M. Pete introduce the three pillars of literacy: phonics, vocabulary, and knowledge, which serve to create a reading environment built on students' continual acquisition of knowledge and need to learn. By reading The Big Three, educators will learn how to create literacy-reframed classrooms, where students are consumed by the sound of reading, engrossed by the words on the page, and thirsting to learn more about anything and everything"--

Book excerpt: As any writing teacher will tell you, writing is about the journey, not the destination. This practical new book takes that idea to heart and presents a map for the trip based on the five elements of the Writer's Workshop: mini-lessons, reading, composing, sharing, and continuous assessment. Two-part chapters first address the type of writing being considered—poetry, story, expository, journal, personal, or persuasive—in light of the five workshop elements; then, provide vignettes from three elementary classrooms that show the workshop elements being effectively implemented. Along the way, student artifacts from grades 1, 3, and 5—and the insights of three teachers from these grades—bolster the book's narrative. For elementary school English teachers.

Book Literacy in America

Download or read book Literacy in America written by Edward E. Gordon and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2003 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive history of how the American people achieved varying degrees of literacy from early colonial times to the modern era. The authors demonstrate that literacy education is not synonymous with schooling. By focusing on people rather than statistics, including literacy among women and minority groups, they explore the literacy agents, methods, and materials used at different times and places throughout the history of the country. The authors define literacy as the degree of interaction with written text that enables individuals to be productive members of their societies. Family literacy is essential to awakening the personal responsibility and motivation necessary for children to develop a love of reading. This effort requires more intensive collaboration procedures between the home and the school, some of which are detailed here. Based largely on primary materials, this historical survey reveals important lessons from the past that can be applied to achieve higher levels of 21st- century literacy.

This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books can change lives — and here are more than fifty powerful letters from young readers to authors revealing some of the ways that is true. Annie Schnitzer tells Elie Wiesel, “Reading your story allowed me to connect with my own history,” explaining how reading his memoir deepened her understanding of her grandparents’ plight during the Holocaust. After reading The House on Mango Street, Julia Mueller writes to Sandra Cisneros, “You didn’t tell me how to pull myself back together; you just showed me that I could. I was tired of trying to be somebody else’s definition of beautiful, and you told me that was okay.” Culled from the Letters About Literature contest of the Library of Congress Center for the Book, the fifty-two letters in this collection — written by students in grades four through twelve — reveal how deeply books and poetry affect the lives of readers. Offering letters that are as profound as they are personal and as moving as they are enlightening, this collection, which also features artwork by some of the contest entrants, provides a glimpse into young people’s lives and their connections — both expected and unexpected — to the written word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This partial fantasy and partial realistic story takes place because of a strange and unworldly event that happened inside the local library in the small town of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. It transcends the bounds of earth and time in a unique way. It follows the plight of a young man that was saddled with many hardships including being illiterate, suffering from poverty, a severe stuttering problem, and the lack of a basic education. It follows his quest to overcome all of those obstacles especially his desire to be able to read, write, and communicate with others.Inside his mind he could form sentences, paragraphs, stories, and even various complex concepts. He could converse with a basic intellectual understanding of speech within his own thoughts. Sadly though, the words he was trying to convey or speak to another person were lost between his inner thoughts and those that formed on his tongue, or his spoken word, and he would stutter profusely. I would say that a good portion of this story is factual as I was born and raised near that small town in Northern Idaho, with the balance of it being a total journey into fiction and fantasy. There was a young man such as the main character Lloyd (not his real name) in this story that I as well as many of the town's people knew back then in the 1960's. People like Lloyd were treated differently in that era of time. Sometimes they were shunned, made fun of, belittled, or just plain ignored. I tried to look past those outdated stereotypes that surrounded people like him, and especially in Lloyd's case. I think that you will find those parts of this story that are a bit on the fantasy side to be very intriguing. I wove into the fabric of my story a lot of things that I learned and conceived during my studies of how the human mind functions, how we are shaped by our experiences in life, and how our emotions either shape or skew our reality of every day living. If nothing else, I hope reading this story will instill in you the importance of reading and possibly a new appetite to seek the mental experiences and knowledge you will attain from simply taking a break from your busy life and curling up with a good book. Finally, I hope it opens your heart to be more kind, empathetic, and understanding to someone less fortunate that yourself that may have been dealt with hardships that you could hardly fathom or comprehend.Jerry W. Miller
