Book Journey to the Kingdom of Thailand

Download or read book Journey to the Kingdom of Thailand written by Kalman Dubov and published by Kalman Dubov. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reflects my time in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in the north of the country. This Far Eastern country, known worldwide for its flavorful cuisine and challenging sauces, is a country steeped in tradition. The north was previously the Lan Na Kingdom, with Chiang Mai as its capital. The ancient city walls and surrounding moat are still visible, as are many of the ancient Wat, Buddhist places of worship. The Thai practice of Theravada Buddhism, with other ancient traditions are celebrations practiced throughout the year and these practices are present in the country. I spent a month in the north, exploring the sites and speaking with a wide variety of people to gain a greater appreciation for the people, its language, Asian and Thai customs and traditions, as well as its food. Chiang Mai also has a unique Jewish presence, with many visitors. I review these fascinating aspects of the city and area. I also visited the Golden Triangle, the highest point of Thailand, where the borders with Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet. I also briefly visited Donesao Island, Laos, crossing the Mekong River in the process.

Download or read book Thailand written by Maurizio Peleggi and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2007-05-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourist brochures and travel guides depict Thailand as an exotic country with a rich cultural heritage, strong religious traditions, and a popular monarchy. Historians also contribute to Thailand’s international allure with chronicles of its unique historical and cultural continuity in comparison to the other southeast Asian countries, whose histories are stained by colonialism and nationalist struggles for independence. Thailand challenges these stereotypes with a reinterpretation as well as an introduction to the emergence of Thailand as a nation-state. The book argues that the development of Thai nationhood was a long-term process shaped by interactions with the outside world, its pursuit of civilization, and, more recently, globalization. Maurizio Peleggi’s original account investigates, among other issues, the evolution of the geographical and linguistic landscapes, changes in class and gender relations, the role of institutions and ideologies, modern cultural expressions, social memory, and the conception of the Thai national self as contrasted against the racial and cultural Others of Burmese, Chinese and Westerners. Thailandis a concise and compelling introduction to the complexities that lie behind Thailand’s exotic facade.

Told through an accessible narrative, this book covers Thailand's dramatic history, including: The true story of Anna Leonowens, the British governess hired to teach the children of King Mongkut in the early 1860s, later fictionalized in Margaret Landon's bestselling novel Anna and the King of Siam and turned into a hit Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, The King and I The invasion of Thailand by the Japanese and construction of the "Bridge on the River Kwai" made famous by the Pierre Boulle novel and Oscar-winning film The mysterious death of King Ananda Mahidol, murdered in his bed in 1946 and a source of controversy ever since The development of Thailand into a leading tourist mecca, which began during the Vietnam War when it was used as rowdy destination for American servicemen on breaks The 70-year reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-serving monarch who was born in the U.S., educated in Switzerland, loved to play the saxophone and was idolized by his people The bloodless Siamese Revolution of 1932 that established the first constitutional monarchy in Asia overnight Author and historian Richard A. Ruth also explains how Thailand became the only country in Southeast Asia to resist European domination, how Thai Buddhism has wrought profound political and social changes, how Thai cuisine has conquered the world and, more recently, how the consequences of globalization and military rule continue to reshape Thai society. Download or read book To Venture Further written by Tristan Jones and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Chinese legends tell of heroic attempts to navigate the waterways of the Kra peninsula which divides the Andaman Sea from the Gulf of Thailand. Yet despite efforts over the last century by expeditions from several Western navies, there was no record of a successful crossing—none, that is, until renowned sailor Tristan Jones took on the challenge. To Venture Further is the inspiring story of this memorable exploit by one of the finest sailing adventure writers of our time. Accompanied by his German mate, Thomas, and three disabled Thai youths, Jones makes the short but exceedingly difficult passage across the Kra in a small seagoing fishing boat. Facing floating debris, homemade dams, mechanical failure, and precariously low funds, Jones—whose left leg was amputated several years before—remains determined to win out against all obstacles, no matter how insurmountable they seem. With characteristically acerbic wit, Jones offers shrewd commentary on the Westernization of modern Thailand, bemoaning the destruction of a once-idyllic land. And whether confronting a band of raucous teenage monks, outwitting pirates in the Gulf of Thailand, or cruising a dry riverbed by hitching his boat onto an elephant, he continues to exhibit the awesome stubbornness and implacable courage of a man willing to sacrifice all comforts for the unknown and seemingly impossible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the year 550 A.D., in the heart of the Persian Empire, Caspar, an ordinary Christian merchant, has a dream and a strange encounter with men from the Golden Land. A chain of events launches Caspar and his cousin Rafael on a dangerous journey across the sea to a foreign kingdom. Sent by the Patriarch of the Church of the East in Seleucia (now Baghdad), Caspar and Rafael travel to bring the Gospel to a land the ancients called Suvarnabhumi, the Golden Land (the land we now call Thailand.) This is a story not yet told, the lost history of Christianity in the East. This is a novel, but it is based on actual historical events, battles, emperors and people. Several of the characters in this novel are based on real individuals who lived and died during the sixth century before the rise of Islam. Most people do not know the history of the Christian Church in the East. From the time St. Thomas landed in India in 52 A.D., the Christian church has sent missionaries east to Asia. When Catholics landed in Asia in the 1500's they found the Christian church already established in India, in China and in Southeast Asia. This is the story of a family that sacrificed everything to bring the story of Jesus to the people of a land we now call Thailand.
