Book Journey to the End of the Night

Download or read book Journey to the End of the Night written by Louis-Ferdinand Céline and published by Calder Publications Limited. This book was released on 1988 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was published in 1932, this revolutionary first fiction redefined the art of the novel with its black humor, its nihilism, and its irreverent, explosive writing style, and made Louis-Ferdinand Celine one of France's--and literature's--most important 20th-century writers. The picaresque adventures of Bardamu, the sarcastic and brilliant antihero of Journey to the End of the Night move from the battlefields of World War I (complete with buffoonish officers and cowardly soldiers), to French West Africa, the United States, and back to France in a style of prose that's lyrical, hallucinatory, and hilariously scathing toward nearly everybody and everything. Yet, beneath it all one can detect a gentle core of idealism.

Book excerpt: AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • An absorbing, deeply felt book about our anxious present tense—and coming to grips with the future, by the author of the award-winning To Be a Machine. “Deeply funny and life-affirming, with a warm, generous outlook even on the most challenging of subjects.” —Esquire We’re alive in a time of worst-case scenarios: The weather has gone uncanny. A pandemic draws our global community to a halt. Everywhere you look there’s an omen, a joke whose punchline is the end of the world. How is a person supposed to live in the shadow of such a grim future? What might it be like to live through the worst? And what on earth is anybody doing about it? Dublin-based writer Mark O’Connell is consumed by these questions—and, as the father of two young children, he finds them increasingly urgent. In Notes from an Apocalypse, he crosses the globe in pursuit of answers. He tours survival bunkers in South Dakota. He ventures to New Zealand, a favored retreat of billionaires banking on civilization’s collapse. He engages with would-be Mars colonists, preppers, right-wing conspiracists. And he bears witness to places, like Chernobyl, that the future has already visited—real-life portraits of the end of the world as we know it. What emerges is an absorbing, funny, and deeply felt book about our anxious present tense—and coming to grips with what’s ahead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Aquinas and William Langland inherited the dynamic metaphor of journeying as a fundamental concept of the Christian life and harnessed it to animate their magisterial texts: the Summa Theologiae and Piers Plowman. Christians' journey back to God consists in the way of charity, yet it is far from straightforward or sequential. Rather, it is impinged upon by epistemic ambiguity, our willful continued habits of resistance, and inherent limitations on our perfection. In sum, the virtues are divine gifts humanly received, treasure in earthen vessels. Together these authors show the complexity we ourselves will find along this life's journey, enable our understanding to appreciate that complexity, and in limited ways cultivate in us the virtues they describe.

Book excerpt: The story of the deportation of Romanians from Bucovina to the steppes of Siberia, an exercise in historical memory and a powerful story of maintaining humanity in impossible conditions. A new novel from Liliana Corobca and her translator Monica Cure, winner of the Oxford-Weidenfeld translation prize. Ana is eleven when the Soviet soldiers send her from Bucovina, Romania, to Kazakhstan. She is just one of many forced to leave behind her home and make the three week long journey via train. The trip is a harsh, humiliating one, but in spite of the cold and the closeness of death, life persists in the boxcar in the form of storytelling, riddles, and ritual. Years later, Ana recalls her childhood for her great granddaughter, who is considering moving her to a nursing home. Her story, told with unflinching candor, is a chronicle of a life lived during a time of great political and national change, a story of an existence defined and curtailed by lines drawn on a map. The narration is interspersed with songs that transform into poems, and prayers spoken in the past that become prayers in the present. What links the narration is not so much a plot as it is the reader’s astonishment. How could Ana survive such a series of experiences, and do so with her mind and heart intact? A history of cruelty and trauma lies behind the banal markers of contemporary life. These realizations combine in the central theme of the book, one which the narrator describes as, “stories bring you youth.”

  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Second Lives written by Tim Guest and published by Random House. This book was released on 2008-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’ve always dreamed of perfect places: Eden, heaven, Utopia. Imagine gambling without loss, love without heartbreak, sex without exposure, experience without risk. Welcome to the fascinating world of online virtual reality, the land of invented places and populations that is entered and inhabited every week by nearly fifty million people worldwide. Each participant creates a virtual body, works at virtual jobs, and makes virtual friends and family. In Second Lives, Tim Guest, an internationally acclaimed young journalist, takes us on a revelatory journey through the electronic looking glass as he investigates one of the most bizarre phenomena of the twenty-first century. From Second Life to EverQuest and beyond, here are the computer-generated environments and characters that can easily become more engrossing and fulfilling than earthly existence. With the click of a mouse you can select eye color, face shape, height–you can even give yourself wings. Your character, or avatar, can build houses, make and sell works of art, earn money, get married and divorced. In this fascinating and groundbreaking book, Guest meets people who found meaningful love and friendship despite never having met in person, catches up with the companies that have used virtual worlds to make big money, investigates the U.S. military’s massive online global model that trains soldiers to fight anyone anywhere, and travels all the way to gaming-crazed Korea to get a taste for just how big this phenomenon really is. At first glance, these new computer-generated places seem free from trouble and sorrow. But Guest examines the dark side of this technology too, including the online criminals who plague imaginary worlds, from cyber mafiosos and prostitutes to real hackers and terrorists. It seems that one cannot escape greed, corruption, and human weakness–even inside a computer screen. Are these virtual worlds a way to enhance life or to escape it? Guest explores this question personally as he lets himself be transported into myriad parallel universes. By turns provocative, inspiring, and disturbing, Second Lives is a crucial book for this millennium. After all, real life is so twentieth century. Advance praise for Second Lives “Tim Guest is a young writer with the literary goods. My Life in Orange, his hit memoir of growing up in a commune, looked at his past; his riveting new book, Second Lives, looks at our future: the world of virtual reality and the spellbound people who inhabit it. The book is some kind of revelation–by turns compelling, chilling, and illuminating. Curious, intelligent, offbeat, and artful, Guest is at the beginning of a big career.” ——John Lahr, senior drama critic, The New Yorker, author of Prick Up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton Praise from England for Second Lives “An anthropological adventure but also Guest’s personal voyage . . . a fascinating portrait of rainbow landscapes and their inhabitants.” –Time Out London “Rich and colourful . . . an important mapping of a new social frontier.” –The Guardian “Remarkably timely.” –The Sunday Telegraph “Astonishing.” –The Sunday Times

Book A Journey to the End of the Millennium

Download or read book A Journey to the End of the Millennium written by A.B. Yehoshua and published by Halban Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 999 A.D. Christians in Europe are preparing themselves for the arrival of the Messiah at the millennium and religious fervour is in the air. Sailing from the North African port of Tangier to a small, distant town called Paris are a Jewish merchant, Ben Attar, his two beloved wives and his Arab partner, Abu Lutfi. They have come for a meeting with their third partner the widower, Raphael Abulafia who has been forced to turn his back on their previous trading partnership because of his new wife's distrust of the dual marriage of Ben Attar. The latter turns this annual trading voyage into a personal quest to legitimise his second wife, restore his honour and, equally important, to show others the richness and humanity in his way of life. A confrontation ensues between people of different cultures whose ways of living and loving are so different, and yet who are of the same religion, believe in the same God and in the same morality. Thus we enter a profound human drama whose moral conflicts of fidelity and desire resonate deeply with our times. A. B. Yehoshua has imaginatively recreated a medieval world with its merchant trade in great depth and sensuous detail. His evocation of one man's love is lyrical, erotic even, and A Journey to the End of the Millennium will rank with the best of Yehoshua's work.

Book Journey S End

Download or read book Journey S End written by Victoria Brewster and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Journey's End, many and varied collaborators write about death, dying, and the end of life. We attempt to describe real life issues and circumstances, and we discuss ways to proactively deal with them. Useful training, resource, and reference material is also included. Death, dying, and end of life are topics many prefer to avoid. This book suggests that we benefit from having frank discussions, living life to the fullest, and planning for our own journey's end, whenever that may be. Everyone who is born eventually will die, whether or not we want to embrace that fact. **** Though few of us know when we will die, we and our family or friends can be well prepared. We can have discussions and create written directives for what we want, if we are unable to verbally state them ourselves. Do we want life support? Do we want interventions that may or may not have any benefit to our quality of life if we are in the hospital or in an accident? Do we want to be involved in planning our funeral, memorial, or celebration of life? The submissions within are from professionals in the field of death and bereavement support and from laypeople, all of whom share stories of dying family members, friends, clients, and patients. Julie and Victoria, the coauthors of this book, also share stories from their personal and professional experiences. Journey's End is a broadly comprehensive book about death, dying, and the end of life.

Book Jason s Journey

Download or read book Jason s Journey written by Allen L. Harrell, MD and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of my journey here on earth is presently being played out, but I am not afraid. In my lifetime, I have experienced it all--love, happiness, sorrow, and disappointment. Yet I have never felt alone. First, in my childhood, my parents were always there to love and protect me, and then it was my friends at school. I was abundantly blessed having Anne at my side, my wife and my life's companion. But even above all this, I have felt the ever presence of God. I've said and done many things that I regret, but my God is a forgiving god, and in my prayers, I am ever pleading for forgiveness for offending him in any way. I can only imagine the wonderment of what lies ahead for me. After seeing only a few of the natural wonders of the world, how much more beauty can my eyes behold? For me, heaven would be having my spirit set free to float throughout the universe, seeing the marvels of the world that God created for all mankind. But I can only imagine what heaven is really like. A song set to music by Bart Millard, "I Can Only Imagine," says it all: I can only imagine what it would be like when I walk by your side. I can only imagine what my eyes will see when your face is before me. I can only imagine. Surrounded by your glory, what will my heart feel? Will I dance for you Jesus, or in awe be still? Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall? Will I sing hallelujah? Will I be able to speak at all? I can only imagine when that day comes and I find myself standing before you. I can only imagine when all I do is forever, forever worship you. I can only imagine. I can only imagine.

Book Strengthening Families and Ending Abuse

Download or read book Strengthening Families and Ending Abuse written by Nancy Nason-Clark and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strengthening families of different varieties and ending abuse in the myriad of forms through which it surfaces is God's way of bringing peace and safety to Christian homes across the world. We challenge congregations, their leaders, and the men, women, and youth who faithfully support them to consider their personal role in bringing this vision--inspired by the Scriptures--into reality. Together our voices can be strong. We are united in our belief that every home should be a safe home, every home a shelter from the storms of life, every home a place where we are supported, treated with respect and dignity, and every home a place where men and women are encouraged to be all they can be. It is a tall order. It is a dream to guide our personal conduct and to measure our congregational and community life. We are far from reaching this goal--but toward it we strive.

Book Jeremiah s Journey

    Book Details:
  • Author : J Hand
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2012-09-20
  • ISBN : 1479717460
  • Pages : 444 pages

Download or read book Jeremiah s Journey written by J Hand and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of Jeremiah’s rescue of the last Judean king’s daughters. It has elements of espionage, action and adventure. It may read like a modern thriller, but it is based on the life of the biblical Jeremiah and the histories and traditions of other nations. It operates on the assumption that Jeremiah did exactly what God told him that he would do. God told Jeremiah that he would see the destruction of his nation but also the replanting and rebuilding in a different land that he did not know. The history uses modern dates. There are many espionage characteristics because while he loudly proclaimed Gods message of the consequences to his nation of their choices, he also had to use secrecy. The survival of the culture in the captives taken to Babylonia depended on it. Finally, he would use secrecy to protect the last descendants of King David. The main characters in this story besides Jeremiah are his partner, Baruch, a black royal guard captain, Ebed-Meleck and of course, the king’s daughters. It does not conflict with the Bible, but get ready to be entertained, enlightened and inspired.
