It consists of Ordinary, Honorary, and Ex-officio Fellows of either sex. Ordinary Fellows are elected on a Certificate of Recommendation signed by three Ordinary Fellows, setting forth the names, residence, and description of the Candidate, or whom the first proposer must have personal knowledge. The annual Subscription of Fellows permanently residing abroad is 1l. 11s. 6d., or a reduction of one-fourth. Honorary Fellows (limited to 50), consisting of persons eminent in Microscopical or Biological Science, are elected on the recommendation of five Ordinary Fellows and the approval of the Council. Ex-officio Fellows (limited to 100), consisting of the Presidents for the time being of any Societies having objects in whole or in part similar to those of the Society, are elected on the recommendation of ten Ordinary Fellows and the approval of the Council. The Journal, containing the Transactions and Proceedings of the Society, and a Summary of Current Researches relating to Zoology and Botany (principally Invertebrata and Cryptogamia), Microscopy, etc., is published bi-monthly, and is forwarded post-free to all Ordinary and Ex-officio Fellows residing in countries within the Postal Union. The Library, with the Instruments, Apparatus, and Cabinet of Objects' is open for the use of Fellows daily (except Saturdays), from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Microscopical Journal, 1874, Vol. 11: Transactions of the Royal Microscopical Society, and Record Whilst watching the habits of Podurae and Pseudo scorpions I have often been consclous of the presence in the cork cells of unin vited guests in the shape of a'cari of various species, either collected unintentionally by the camel-hair brush into the test tube together with the desired captures, or migrating from 'one cork cell to another of their own free will and pleasure. Book The Monthly Microscopical Journal Vol 15

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Monthly Microscopical Journal, Vol. 15: Transactions of the Royal Microscopical Society, and Record of Historical Research at Home and Abroad In the case of Dionaea, Darwin gives a very brief description of minute glands of a reddish-purple colour which cover the upper side of the leaf, and which he states to have the power of absorption. But in order to find an adequate description of these bodies we must go back nearly thirty years, when Dr. Lindley gave accurate descriptions and figures of them in his 'Ladies' Botany, ' published in 1834, and, in the following words, showed a wonderful insight into their probable function: - "From the cuticle of the upper surface of the leaf of Dionaea there spring at short intervals little red glands, which grow from minute green oval spaces, composed of two parallel green cells and resembling stomates. They are firm fleshy bodies resembling little convex buttons, and are composed of cells arranged in a circular manner round an axis consisting of two such cells stationed one on the top of the other. I presume that these glands are analogous to the curious hairs of Sundew, although we do not see that they are possessed of any irritability; but in the Sundew they arise from a general expansion of the cuticle and not from spurious stomates. We moreover find upon the surface a prodigious number of red glands, so minute as to be individually invisible to the naked eye, and giving a red tinge to the leaf. Such glands are found nowhere except upon the upper surface of the leaf in the neighbourhood of the delicate seat of irritability. It is not improbable that these glands are either in some way connected with the irritability, although it is not they through which the shock is first communicated to the leaf, or, as Mr. Curtis supposes, are intended to absorb the nutriment afforded to the leaf by the decay of the insects entrapped in it." Similar bodies are also known to exist in Nepenthes; and were likewise described by Dr. Lindley, in his 'Introduction to Botany, ' edition 1848, as stomates of a peculiar construction in contact with an internal deep brownish-red gland. My own observations have been entirely confined to the two most readily obtainable of our English carnivorous plants, Drosera rotundifolia and Pinguicula vulgaris; having paid considerable attention to the structure of the leaves in these two species during my summer holidays for the last three years. In the summer of 1873, while staying in Westmoreland, I first observed and drew certain bodies imbedded in the leaf of Drosera which it struck me must be connected with the processes of absorption and digestion, although I could find no record of them by any previous observer. Hearing shortly afterwards that Mr. Darwin was likely soon to bring before the public his store of long-accumulating investigations on these plants, I refrained from publishing my observations. Download or read book Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society Vol 3 written by Frank Crisp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society, Vol. 3: Containing Its Transactions and Proceedings, and a Record of Current Researches Relating to Invertebrata, Cryptogamia, Microscopy, &C.; February, 1880 As the result of endeavours made to ascertain the views of the Fellows, it has been found that a desire exists that the pages occupied by the Bibliography should be devoted to an extension of the abstracts of important biological and microscopical papers, instead of including the titles simply of all such papers. Recognizing that the Editors exist for the Journal, and not the Journal for the Editors, it is intended to give effect to this wish, though not without some personal regret. The aim of the Journal has been, as before explained, to give the Fellows full information as to what has been published in the current periodical literature of all countries; and as it is impossible to do this completely - at any rate at present - by means of abstracts, the Bibliography was intended to supply some of the omissions, so that the Fellows might still feel assured that there was no paper that was not, in some form, brought under their notice. As great importance must attach to the nearest approach to completeness in this respect, it is proposed to incorporate with the Record of Current Researches, bibliographical notes of papers that it may be impossible to abstract, either for want of space or for other reasons.
