Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A ... first-person account of the discoveries that brought to light the early fossil record of whales. As evidenced in the record, whales evolved from herbivorous forest-dwelling ancestors that resembled tiny deer to carnivorous monsters stalking lakes and rivers and to serpentlike denizens of the coast. Thewissen reports on his discoveries in the wilds of India and Pakistan, weaving a narrative that reveals the day-to-day adventures of fossil collection, enriching it with local flavors from South Asian culture and society"--Dust jacket flap.

Book Geological Evolution of the Precambrian Indian Shield

Download or read book Geological Evolution of the Precambrian Indian Shield written by M.E.A. Mondal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-26 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents findings from research into the Precambrian history of the Indian shield obtained using state-of-the-art technology. It demonstrates a paradigm shift towards studying the Precambrian shield regions using petrological, geochemical, structural, metallogenic, sedimentological and paleobiological data from the rocks in the Precambrian shield area, and presents a collection of contributions on these diverse topics that help to reconstruct the Precambrian evolution of the Indian Shield.

Book Biological Consequences of Plate Tectonics

Download or read book Biological Consequences of Plate Tectonics written by Guntupalli V.R. Prasad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recognizes and celebrates the contributions of Professor Ashok Sahni to the field of paleontology. Prof. Sahni established a School of Vertebrate Palaeontology at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India, where he trained many of today’s vertebrate paleontologists of India. The book covers topics on evolutionary patterns, macroevolutionary events, origination and radiation events, changes in physical environments & climate and their implications for biodiversity dynamics, intercontinental affinities and biogeographic connections in a plate tectonic framework. The book begins by exploring India in the age of the dinosaurs, discussing new fossil remains from the Jurassic Era, then moves through the Cretaceous and Eocene to provide a picture on faunal and floral changes in Gondwanaland in the context of plate tectonics. Furthermore, the book explores the evolutionary patterns and biotic dispersals that resulted from the northward drift of Indian plate during the Cretaceous and its collision with Asia in the Eocene. The respective chapters reveal the role of plate tectonics and climate in shaping the geographical distribution of plants and animals in Gondwana, specifically in India, as well as the post-India/Asia collision implications for biodiversity changes and biogeography in the region’s continental environments. Given its scope, the book will appeal to vertebrate paleontologists, evolutionary biologists, and paleobiogeographers.

Book The Value of Outcrop Studies in Reducing Subsurface Uncertainty and Risk in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production

Download or read book The Value of Outcrop Studies in Reducing Subsurface Uncertainty and Risk in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production written by M. Bowman and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews and reappraises the value and impact of outcrop-based fieldwork in hydrocarbon exploration, appraisal, development and production. There has been a resurgence in the use and need for outcrop-based research as analogues and benchmarks for subsurface overburden and reservoir studies, and digital technologies combined with traditional methods are revolutionizing this area of field-studies.

Book Precambrian Basins of India

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. Mazumder
  • Publisher : Geological Society of London
  • Release : 2015-04-02
  • ISBN : 1862397236
  • Pages : 349 pages

Download or read book Precambrian Basins of India written by R. Mazumder and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Memoir provides a comprehensive review of the Precambrian basins of the four Archaean nuclei of India (Dharwar, Bastar, Singhbhum and Aravalli-Bundelkhand), encompassing descriptions of the time-space distribution of sedimentary-volcanic successions, the interrelationship between tectonics and sedimentation, and basin histories. Studies of 22 basins within the framework of an international basin classification scheme deepen an understanding of the basin architecture especially for cratonic basins. Most Indian sedimentary successions formed as cratonic to extensional-margin rift and thermal-sag basins, some reflecting mantle plume movement, subcrustal heating or far-field stress. This Memoir shows that Phanerozoic plate-tectonic and sequence stratigraphic principles can be applied to the Precambrian basins of large Archaean provinces. The differences between the stratigraphic architecture of the Indian Precambrian and examples of Phanerozoic basin-fill successions elsewhere are ascribed to variable rates and intensities of the controls on accommodation and sediment supply, and changes inherent in the evolution of the hydrosphere-atmosphere and biosphere systems.
