Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Religion of Life examines the interconnections and relationship between Catholicism and eugenics in early twentieth-century Chile. Specifically, it demonstrates that the popularity of eugenic science was not diminished by the influence of Catholicism there. In fact, both eugenics and Catholicism worked together to construct the concept of a unique Chilean race, la raza chilena. A major factor that facilitated this conceptual overlap was a generalized belief among historical actors that male and female gender roles were biologically determined and therefore essential to a functioning society. As the first English-language study of eugenics in Chile, The Religion of Life surveys a wide variety of different materials (periodicals, newspapers, medical theses, and monographs) produced by Catholic and secular intellectuals from the first half of the twentieth century. What emerges from this examination is not only a more complex rendering of the relationship between religion and science but also the development of White supremacist logics in a Latin American context.

Is the journey with God meant to be one where we mindlessly live it, abandoned to simply react to what we see on our own? Is there more for us? Is there good or better? Where is Christ Jesus in our everyday lives? What now? Considering 2022 and beyond—If you are ready to peel back the layers of your life and explore your personal, Christian journey, The Annual Life Journal is for you! The past couple of years have been years like no other. They have been polarizing, perplexing, scary, challenging, and passionate. We have seen the best of us and the worst of us. We are all grappling with what to do next, trying to understand what the Spirit of God is saying to us. Can we hear clearly? So many emotions are running hot, yet God is still speaking. Are we listening? Can we calm down long enough to hear His still, small Voice? Are we able to find a safe way to channel our fears, frustrations, doubts, lack of understanding, sadness, anxiety, disappointments, grief, and losses? I believe God’s answer to us is, “Yes.” But, we must journey with the Lord in order for this to happen. There is no other way. This Journal is a resource to center our attention where it should be—in life with Christ by the power and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Jesus suffered, bled, died, and was resurrected for our lives. Book Sacred Stories Spiritual Tribes

Download or read book Sacred Stories Spiritual Tribes written by Nancy Tatom Ammerman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nancy Tatom Ammerman examines the stories Americans tell of their everyday lives, from dinner table to office and shopping mall to doctor's office, about the things that matter most to them and the routines they take for granted, and the times and places where the everyday and ordinary meet the spiritual. In addition to interviews and observation, Ammerman bases her findings on a photo elicitation exercise and oral diaries, offering a window into the presence and absence of religion and spirituality in ordinary lives and in ordinary physical and social spaces. The stories come from a diverse array of ninety-five Americans — both conservative and liberal Protestants, African American Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Wiccans, and people who claim no religious or spiritual proclivities — across a range that stretches from committed religious believers to the spiritually neutral. Ammerman surveys how these people talk about what spirituality is, how they seek and find experiences they deem spiritual, and whether and how religious traditions and institutions are part of their spiritual lives.
