Some eagle species have consequently experienced extreme population changes. There are, however, some positive developments. Eagles have a strong, historic bond with human civilization, due to their status as the world’s most charismatic birds. Conservation policies have also been successful in repopulating some ecosystems with breeding eagles. Therefore, despite the complexity of this relationship, there may yet be hope for this unique species group, frequently rated as the kings of birds, and symbolic of human power, ambition, royalty, nationality, and even concepts of God. Book excerpt: The impetus for this volume was the 2nd International Wetlands Conference which was held in June, 1984 at Trebon, Czechoslovakia. An overview of the worlds wetlands was one of the themes of the conference and it was decided that a useful follow-up would be a publication on the same topic. The initial goal was to cover as many of the worlds wetlands as possible in one volume and to have an emphasis on wetland ecology, biota, classification, and management. Individuals who made presentations at the Trebon confer ence were asked to prepare chapters and the editors also solicited other contributions. For a variety of reasons, the initial goal has been difficult to reach, especially coverage of the entire globe, and it has been necessary to publish the contributions in more than one volume. Volume 1 represents the com pletion of the first phase of the project and it covers most of the Western Hemisphere, Australia, most of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, the Mediter ranean region, and Papua New Guinea. Volume 2 will contain chapters on Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central Europe, most of northern and It is our hope that Volume western Asia, the Middle East, and Indonesia. 2 will appear in the near future and, if possible, a third volume will be published if authors can be secured to cover areas such as the Far East, other parts of the Indo-Pacific region, and New Zealand.

As per Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA), wetlands deliver 45% of the world’s natural productivity and ecosystem services of which the benefits are estimated at $20 trillion a year. Thus, wetlands exhibit enormous diversity according to their genesis, geographical location, water regime and chemistry, dominant plants and soil or sediment characteristics. Wetlands directly and indirectly support millions of people in providing services such as food, fibre and raw materials, storm and flood control, clean water supply, scenic beauty and educational and recreational benefits. Apart from beneficiary contribution of wetlands to the ecosystem, biotic and abiotic components, and human inhabitants, the very subsistence of these unique natural resources is under intimidation due to developmental activities, population pressure, and anthropogenic stress. Globally, the areal extent of wetland ecosystems ranges from 917 million hectares (m ha) to more than 1275 m ha with an estimated economic value of about USD 15 trillion a year. Overall, 1052 Sites in Europe; 289 Sites in Asia; 359 Sites in Africa; 175 Sites in South America; 211 Sites in North America; and 79 Sites in Oceania region have been recognized as per international recognition for designation to be handled under protected areas. It gives us an immense pleasure in presenting this comprehensive book on Ecosystem Analysis of Two Tropical Community Reservoirs of India. This book covers an extensive research on two significant wetlands of national importance of Central Gujarat, India, listed in ‘Asian Directory of Wetlands’, highlighting point and non-point sources of pollution, nutrient budget and recycling of nutrients in surface water and bottom sediments, planktons as indicators and markers of pollution, macrophytes as indicators of quality of wetlands, suitability of habitat for waterfowl conservation, and conservation and site-specific management strategies for sustainable use of biotic resources with recommendations and mitigating measures.
