Book The Retrospect of Practical Medicine and Surgery Vol 2

Download or read book The Retrospect of Practical Medicine and Surgery Vol 2 written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Practical Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 2: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences As many may probably read this second volume of the Retrospect of Medicine and Surgery, who will not have the opportunity of seeing the first, it may be as well once more, briefly to state that the object of the work is to bring into one focus all the pithy materials of the numerous Medical Journals now published; omitting that matter, which, however interesting in many respects, is not of real and essential importance to the bed-side practitioner and truly practical man. There are so many Medical .Journals published at the present time, and likely to be more, that it becomes absolutely necessary, if the active practitioner means to keep pace with the discoveries and improvements continually being made, that he should possess some such work as this, which will present to him atone view, every few months, and at a comparatively small expense, a summary of the most practical articles to be found scattered in so numerous a list of periodicals. By this means, every practitioner may go on taking in the one or two Journals which he is accustomed to, and may at the same time have a condensed account of all the rest; curtailed indeed considerably, but in fact giving every truly practical remark, and especially every really original observation and new mode of treatment; and those practitioners who do not take in any Medical Journal whatever, will now have the opportunity, iu an easy and expeditious way, of making themselves as well acquainted with every necessary improvement, as those who read ever so much. The table will be spread ready for their repast, and the most practical matter will be brought before them ready digested, without the trouble of wading through fourteen or fifteen different journals and periodicals. This work will be especially useful to the busy practitioner who has not time to read much, to the country practitioner who has not the opportunity, and to the young practitioner who cannot afford it. At the same time it will not lie discouraging those who have the time and opportunity to enter more fully into the periodical Medical literature of the day. In this volume will be found an abridged account or digest of almost every article of value on the treatment of disease to be found in the different Medical Journals, from July to December, 1840. The practice of Medicine, Surgery, and Midwifery, has been the chief object in view; Anatomy and Physiology have only been glanced at. This book was released on 2016-12-24 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Retrospect of Practical Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 42: Being a Half-Yearly Journal, Containing a Retrospective View of Every Discovery and Practical Improvement in the Medical Sciences; January, 1861 Few special branches of our Profession now engross more of the attention of Medical practitioners than does this subject. And when we include the Diseases peculiar to Children, this branch of Medicine. Becomes still more comprehensive. And requires still more industry and reading to keep up with the literature of the day. For these reasons we have for some time re printed. From each of our larger volumes, a pamphlet which the Medical practitioner might easily carry in his pocket. And read at the bedoside. Whilst passing some of those wearisome hours which his irksome duties call upon him to spend. In this little pamphlet the Obstetric practitioner will find most of the few and ideas which have been published in various papers during the last six months, on the subject of Midwifery and the Diseases of Women. It will thus save him immense trouble and labour in referring to all the published literature of Great Britain. Ireland. And America. And enable him in an hour or two. To make himself master of things which have taken us many weeks. And even months. To collect and condense. Amongst other things. We will first direct the reader's attention to a new pair of Forceps, in great use in America. And especi ly by Dr. Knight, of Baltimore. We have long thought that the forceps required improvement - that they might be made smaller and fit the head better. Thus running less risk of laceratiug the per iaeum. The forceps of Dr. Knight. Described in the first article on Mid wifery. Seem to us to deserve the attention of the British practitioner. They are smaller. More easily applied. Fit the head better. Have no fenestra. And possess other advantages which Dr. Knight describes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The British and Foreign Medico Chirurgical Review Or Quarterly Journal of Practical Medicine and Surgery Vol 37

Download or read book The British and Foreign Medico Chirurgical Review Or Quarterly Journal of Practical Medicine and Surgery Vol 37 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British and Foreign Medico-Chirurgical Review, or Quarterly Journal of Practical Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 37: January-April, 1866 This subject of the original foundation and character Of hos pitals might advantageously be investigated; to examine it here would be beside the subject we have in hand. The saying has of late become popularized, that hospitals are institutions proper to an imperfect civilization; but we look upon it as one Of those smart pseudo-philosophic dicta for which the present dayis remark able. It is possible, indeed, to imagine hospitals unnecessary and of a bygone character in a Utopian society where no sick poor, or, at least, none unable to Obtain efficient medical aid and nursing should exist; where all medical practitioners should be equally enlightened and skilled, and where the field of experience, Oh servation, and research afforded by large medical, institutions would be worthless in advancing medical science, in creating a high class of physicians and surgeons, and also in training those who should adopt the medical profession as their calling. A state of society admitting Of all this, and implying such an equality of talent, and with it such an equality in the appreciation by the public Of all practitioners in medicine, is one that we cannot regard as likely to be realized whilst human nature is what it is. Consequently we infer that hospitals, however degrading as marks Of imperfect civilization, will ever be necessary in the most civilized society to be developed and we trust that philo sophers, equally with meaner folk, will not think their efforts lost in endeavouring to make such institutions more worthy than they at present are Of the civilization Of the age. It would be much more Of a truth to say that hospitals have not, either in their construction or management, kept pace with advancing civilization. Their primary end and aim, that Of curing their patients as speedily and completely as possible, has not been kept prominently enough in view. Eflbrts have been expended rather in favour Of multiplying patients within their wards, than in making hospitals instruments of treatment; facility Of access has been more studied than facilities of cure and the administration Of medicines and brilliant or ingenious operations have received much more attention than the provision Of good nursing, of pure air and free ventilation.
