Book Journal of Cutaneous and Genito Urinary Diseases Vol 10

Download or read book Journal of Cutaneous and Genito Urinary Diseases Vol 10 written by Henry W. Stelwagon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Cutaneous and Genito-Urinary Diseases, Vol. 10: January, 1892 Clinical Notes. Case I. Thur F., a Russian woman, aged 43, thickly set and strongly built, of good general health, and dark complexion, was admitted into the skin ward of the Philadelphia Hospital, December 20, 1890. Owing to the ignorance of the patient, with the fact that she could scarcely speak any English, the history obtainable was far from satisfactory. So far as could be learned from her husband who was closely questioned upon several occasions, the disease dated back four or five months. It began, so he stated, as an itching eruption of an erythematous type extending over the arms and face. At this time or soon afterward an erysipelatous patch appeared over the surface of the metacarpo-phalangeal joint of the thumb of the left hand, becoming gradually, in the course of several days or a few weeks, swollen and elevated, forming a tumor of two to three inches in diameter and one-fourth to one-half inch in altitude. This persisted and grew somewhat more prominent, and finally broke down at the superficial central part, discharging a bloody mucoid fluid. A few weeks later the ulcer had grown to two inches in diameter, with a sharply defined elevated border and a crateriform fungoid central portion. At this time and for a month or two subsequently, erythematous and erysipelatous outbreaks, involving one or several parts, occurred. The patient was finally led through the discomfort and disfigurement produced by the eruption to seek advice. At the time of admission into the hospital the conspicuous and only striking lesion was the fungoidal ulcerating tumor upon the hand. It was fully three to four inches across, rounded, the border considerably elevated, somewhat infiltrated and rather sharply defined against the surrounding healthy skin. It was painful to the touch, but the patient complained of but little spontaneous pain. The surface of the ulcer was mushroom-like, and attended with a variable sanguineous seropurulent discharge. In fact at this rime the growth presented, when taken alone, the appearance of an epitheliomatous tumor, and such it was upon first glance considered. Upon examination of other portions of the general surface, however, it was found that a mild erythematous and eczema-like eruption existed upon the chest anteriorly, and to a slight degree upon the eyelids also. These symptoms together with the history were indicative of mycosis fungoides. No special treatment was ordered for the first several days beyond an antispetic dressing to the ulcer. This began to extend slowly, the discharge now and then becoming offensive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Journal of Cutaneous and Genito Urinary Diseases 1893 Vol 11 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Cutaneous and Genito-Urinary Diseases, 1893, Vol. 11 Bunches did not appear on surface all at once, but gradually increased in number until they were as you now see them. The patient further stated that his general health had always been good and that he had never suffered from any liver trouble. He had been for a long time practically incapacitated for busi ness on account of the pain and difficulty attending any attempt at standing or walking. Upon removing his shoes and stockings there was seen a peculiarly grouped eruption of pale yellow nodules, hard and shotty to the feel and deeply set in the skin. The accompany ing chromo-lithograph gives an accurate picture of the appear ance of the eruption, although, on account of the reduction in size, the lesions appear less distinctly defined and more blended the yellowish tint is perhaps a little too accentuated. The erup tion on the sides and back of the heels and in other localities, presently to be referred to, could not be shown in the picture from the point of view from which it was taken. Book The Journal of Cutaneous and Genito Urinary Disease Vol 17

Download or read book The Journal of Cutaneous and Genito Urinary Disease Vol 17 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Cutaneous and Genito-Urinary Disease, Vol. 17: January, 1899 The method of procedure adopted was as follows: an observation of the case clinically; an examination of the hair or the scale microscopically; a planting of the suspected tissues; and in many cases a microscopical examination of the culture. All hairs and scales were examined at first unstained, and later, in some instances, stained specimens were prepared, but I do not believe in the latter method, for by this artificial process only the living spores are colored and the dead ones remain in obscurity. The result is a picture far from the true one - a picture which does not present the plant as it actually exists. Several methods of staining were tried but that recommended by Adamson of London was finally adopted as the most satisfactory. After experimenting with many different artificial media for the cultivation of the plant I adopted the "milieu-d'epreuve" of Sabouraud as the one soil most favorable to the local varieties of ringworm, and although many variations were made in the proportions of the ingredients, nevertheless, in the end I returned to the original formula and used it during the greater part of my work. Success seldom came to me in my cultures, for out of nearly three hundred inoculations less than fifteen percent, produced favorable results. This percentage refers to distinct cases, for when once an individual plant showed itself capable of artificial reproduction it was almost always possible to obtain sub-cultures ad libitum. These sub-cultures almost always retained the most minute peculiarities of the parent stock and to my mind afforded one of the prettiest demonstrations of the plurality of the ringworm fungi. The maltose of several different manufacturers was tried during the three years, and I found that the resulting cultures varied only slightly - the growth of the microsporon Audouini being white when sown on the maltose of Lehn and Fink of New York and buff when planted on that of Grubler of Leipsig. This was the most striking variation noted, and one can see that this was not as important as those found by European investigators in their studies. The temperature at which the cultures were left to grow was found to influence their characteristics to a considerable extent and after many trials 30 centigrade was decided upon as the one best fitted to produce a rapid and luxuriant growth. As to the reaction of the medium it was found that the more acid it was the more contaminations flourished, while with too much alkali present the vigor of the ringworm was threatened. Therefore, a slightly alkaline reaction was found to be the most favorable. During my second-year's work I discovered, to my temporary disadvantage, an excellent means of checking further growth in a culture and also of rendering hairs and scales infected with ringworm sterile. Book Mycobacterial Skin Infections

Download or read book Mycobacterial Skin Infections written by Domenico Bonamonte and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated book is a comprehensive guide to the cutaneous clinical presentations of mycobacterial infections. The Mycobacterium genus includes over 170 species, nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) having been added to the obligate human pathogens such as M. tuberculosis and M. leprae. NTM are widely distributed in the environment with high isolation rates worldwide; the skin is a major target with variable clinical manifestations. A current resurgence in tuberculosis is aggravated by the synergy with human immunodeficiency virus, the breakdown of health care systems, and the rise in multidrug-resistant disease, as the incidence of leprosy remains stable, at around 250,000 new cases annually, regardless of effective antibiotic therapy. Presentations of various cutaneous infections caused by mycobacteria may be overlooked by clinicians owing the lack of familiarity with tuberculosis, leprosy, and the related NTM clinical features. This handy guide will help the dermatologist to spot the different clinical manifestations, make a prompt diagnosis, and apply effective treatment.

Download or read book Clinical Urology Illustrated written by R.B. Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this precise and authoritative urological text Mr Ronald Brown and his associates have scored two firsts. In its emphasis throughout on the im portance of clinical assessment, history taking and physical examination, together with its wealth of illustrations, it offers a' unique view of genitourinary medicine; and it is the first clinical urology text to be written by an Australian. The authors' approach to their subject is ideal for students and physicians confronted with patients with genitourinary problems. The text is concise, the references valuable and the index comprehensive. I was particularly in terested in the chapter on Paediatric Urology with its admirably succinct of hypospadias, but the outstanding feature of the whole book discussion is the line drawings and illustrative x-rays, not only excellent in themselves but in their presentation: the clear uncrowded layout making it easy for the reader to consult the appropriate illustration nearby, and where helpful there has been no hesitation in using the same diagram in several different places. If my students know everything that's in this book they will know more than most urologists. It is especially gratifying to me to see this fine book emanate from Australia and to know that four of the authors have had their stimulus to excellence in work here at UCLA.
