Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of a Trading Voyage Around the World: 1805-1808 The ship being ready for sea, left her anchorage in the North River on Thursday morning, for Staaten Island, about eight miles below, where she again came to anchor. On Friday night at eleven o'clock, I bade farewell to New York, went on board the pilot boat at Washington street, and accompanied by a number of gentlemen to the ship, where we spent, in a crowded room, the rest of the night. By eight in the morning, on Saturday, the ship weighed anchor and dropped down to the lighthouse, near which we came to, to await the captain's arrival, and finally, at five in the evening, we went to sea; but it was midnight when the pilot left us with the gentlemen who had thus far accompanied us. We had some apprehension of being overhauled by the British frigate Cleopatra, that had been cruising some time off the port and was in sight as we went out, man uvering apparently to give us chase, but by good sailing we soon got out of her reach and view. Passage to the Cape de Verde Islands. It had been determined to touch at the Cape de Verde Islands, in order to take in some fruit and replenish our stock of water for the long voyage before us. With wind mostly light, variable and not generally favorable, our progress was slow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Pacific Islands written by Max Quanchi and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Seas, as this region used to be called, conjured up images of adventure, belles and savages, romance and fabulous fortunes, but the long voyages of discovery and exploration of the vast Pacific Ocean were really an exercise in amazing logistics, navigation, hard grit, shipwreck and pure luck. The motivations were scientific and geographic, but at the same time nationalistic and materialistic. A series on global exploration and discovery would not be complete without this book by Quanchi and Robson. It is ambitious and informative and includes the familiar names of Laperouse, Bougainville, Cook and Dampier, as well as the intriguing stories of the Bounty Mutiny, scurvy, and the mysterious Northwest Passage, Terra Australis Ignotia and Davis Land. There are entries on first contacts, ships, navigational instruments, mapping, and botany. The scene is carefully set in the introduction, the chronology spans several centuries, and the extensive bibliography offers a guide to further reading. There are more than just dry facts in this book. It has a whiff of salt air, the clash of empires, cross-cultural beach encounters and personal adventure.

Download or read book Pacific Passages written by Patrick Moser and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2008-05-08 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thousand years after Hawaiians first paddled long wooden boards into the ocean, modern surfers have continued this practice, which has recently been transformed into a global industry. Pacific Passages brings together four centuries of writing about surfing, the most comprehensive collection of Polynesian and Western perspectives on the history and culture of a sport currently enjoyed by millions of people around the world. The stories begin with Hawaiian legends and chants and are followed by the journals of explorers; the travel narratives of missionaries and luminaries such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, and Jack London; and the contemporary observations of Tom Wolfe, William Finnegan, Susan Orlean, and Bob Shacochis. Readers follow the historical transformation of surfing’s image through the centuries: from Polynesian myths of love to Western accounts of horror and exoticism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to modern representations of surfing as a character-building activity in pre-World-War II California and the quintessential expression of disaffected youth. They explore the sport’s most recent trends by writers and cultural critics, whose insights into technology, competition, gender, heritage, and globalism reveal how surfing impacts some of today’s most pressing social concerns. Aided by informative introductions, the writings in Pacific Passages provide insight into the values and ideals of Polynesian and Western cultures, revealing how each has altered and been altered by surfing—and how the sport itself has shown an amazing ability throughout the centuries to survive, adapt, and prosper.

Book Sharks upon the Land

  • Author : Seth Archer
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press

Download or read book Sharks upon the Land written by Seth Archer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Seth Archer traces the cultural impact of disease and health problems in the Hawaiian Islands from the arrival of Europeans to 1855. Colonialism in Hawaiʻi began with epidemiological incursions, and Archer argues that health remained the national crisis of the islands for more than a century. Introduced diseases resulted in reduced life spans, rising infertility and infant mortality, and persistent poor health for generations of Islanders, leaving a deep imprint on Hawaiian culture and national consciousness. Scholars have noted the role of epidemics in the depopulation of Hawaiʻi and broader Oceania, yet few have considered the interplay between colonialism, health, and culture - including Native religion, medicine, and gender. This study emphasizes Islanders' own ideas about, and responses to, health challenges on the local level. Ultimately, Hawaiʻi provides a case study for health and culture change among Indigenous populations across the Americas and the Pacific.
