Book Jordan Fantosme s Chronicle

Download or read book Jordan Fantosme s Chronicle written by Ronald Carlyle Johnston and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jordan Fantosme was a twelfth-century cleric, teacher and poet, possibly a member of the royal or baronial court, writing for King Henry II. His Chronicle describes some of the events and actions of the civil war between Henry II and his eldest son Henry, the 'Young King', during 1173 and 1174. The main focus of the text, including most of Fantosme's explicitly eyewitness accounts, is on the fighting in Northumberland, where King William I of Scotland, in support of the Young King, broke off ties with Henry II and invaded the north of England. Fantosme's vivid portrayal of the skirmish outside Alnwick, in which King William the Lion was captured, is one of the most memorable parts of this extraordinary account. Fantosme's reputation was that of a naïve and trustworthy reporter, and his Chronicle is regarded as a reliable source, but it is a much more elegant and sophisticated text than originally thought. In his introduction to this translation of the Anglo-Norman text, R. C. Johnston discusses the author's uncertain identity, whether he was an eyewitness to events of the war and problems with the manuscripts. He also reassesses the literary and aesthetic value of the Chronicle, revealing Fantosme as a highly competent and talented story-teller capable of manipulating episodes for stylistic reasons.

Book The English and the Normans

Download or read book The English and the Normans written by Hugh M. Thomas and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-04-10 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Anglo-Norman period itself, the relations beween the English and the Normans have formed a subject of lively debate. For most of that time, however, complacency about the inevitability of assimilation and of the Anglicization of Normans after 1066 has ruled. This book first challenges that complacency, then goes on to provide the fullest explanation yet for why the two peoples merged and the Normans became English. Drawing on anthropological theory, the latest scholarship on Anglo-Norman England, and sources ranging from charters and legal documents to saints' lives and romances, it provides a complex exploration of ethnic relations on the levels of personal interaction, cultural assimilation, and the construction of identity. As a result, the work provides an important case study in pre-modern ethnic relations that combines both old and new approaches, and sheds new light on some of the most important developments in English history.

Book Prowess Piety and Public Order in Medieval Society

Download or read book Prowess Piety and Public Order in Medieval Society written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Kaeuper’s career has examined three salient concerns of medieval society - knightly prowess and violence, lay and religious piety, and public order and government - most directly in three of his monographs: War, Justice, and Public Order (Oxford, 1988), Chivalry and Violence in Medieval Europe (Oxford, 1999), and Holy Warriors (Penn, 2009). Kaeuper approaches historical questions with an eye towards illuminating the inherent complexities in human ideas and ideals, and he has worked to untangle the various threads holding together cultural constructs such as chivalry, licit violence, and lay piety. The present festschrift in his honor brings together scholars from across disciplines to engage with those same concerns in medieval society from a variety of perspectives. Contributors are: Bernard S. Bachrach, Elizabeth A.R. Brown, Samuel A. Claussen, David Crouch, Thomas Devaney, Paul Dingman, Daniel P. Franke, Richard Firth Green, Christopher Guyol, John D. Hosler, William Chester Jordan, Craig M. Nakashian, W. Mark Ormrod, Russell A. Peck, Anthony J. Pollard, Michael Prestwich, Sebastian Rider-Bezerra, Leah Shopkow, and Peter W. Sposato.

Book The Cognitive Revolution in Western Culture

Download or read book The Cognitive Revolution in Western Culture written by Don LePan and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1996-02-08 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are the plots of Shakespeare and his contemporaries so different from those of his predecessors? This book argues that the answer is in part that certain forms of expectation were largely undeveloped in the medieval period. More broadly, it suggests that many of the causal and temporal thought processes that are second nature to us operated very differently or had not been developed in the minds of most medieval people. And conversely, it suggests that other mental faculties (such as the ability to respond to some of the elemental appeal of poetry) may have become dulled by the post-renaissance rationalist emphasis in our culture. In addition to drawing on a broad range of etymological and literary evidence (from the 10th century Gnomic verses to 16th-century drama) the book delves into medieval history, and draws many anthropological parallels. This is a significant study in the nature of narrative and an important investigation into the mental and cultural worlds of Shakespeare and his predecessors.

Download or read book Chronicles written by Chris Given-Wilson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The priorities of medieval chroniclers and historians were not those of the modern historian, nor was the way that they gathered, arranged and presented evidence. Yet if we understand how they approached their task, and their assumption of God's immanence in the world, much that they wrote becomes clear. Many of them were men of high intelligence whose interpretation of events sheds clear light on what happened. Christopher Given-Wilson is one of the leading authorities on medieval English historical writing. He examines how medieval writers such as Ranulf Higden and Adam Usk treated chronology and geography, politics and warfare, heroes and villains. He looks at the ways in which chronicles were used during the middle ages, and at how the writing of history changed between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries.
