Book Rufus Jones 1863 1948

Download or read book Rufus Jones 1863 1948 written by Claus Bernet and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rufus Jones (1863-1948) helped organize the Quäkerspeisung (Quaker feeding effort), saving millions from starvation after the First World War. In Germany he is best known for having travelled to Berlin to seek a personal meeting with Hitler after the Kristallnacht in 1938. And, at the conclusion of a long life devoted to service, it was largely due to Jones that the American Friends Service Committee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947. But Jones was also the quintessential «American scholar», seeking to harmonize theory and practice. He was a pivotal figure of the 20th century who stayed in close touch with authors and statesmen the world over. He earned a reputation as a modern mystic and an active pacifist, and was regarded as the moral conscience of his era. His scholarship encompassed education and pedagogy, philosophical questions, church and Quaker history, as well as the political issues of the day. Jones dealt with such issues as justice, democracy, and child-rearing. His ideas are still alive today and still arouse controversy. He was particularly anxious to avoid the cultivation of an elite, pleading instead for individual growth and personality development. Over the course of his life, he was awarded twelve academic titles, taught at numerous universities, delivered countless lectures, and was one of the first theologians to recognise the significance of radio and to make full use of it. To this day Rufus Jones is still honored as a «seer», «Protestant mystic», and even as a «Master Quaker» and «Quaker Giant». It is time also to take a critical look at these honors.

Book The Inner Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rufus Jones
  • Publisher : Ravenio Books
  • Release : 2010-11
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 115 pages

Download or read book The Inner Life written by Rufus Jones and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is no inner life that is not also an outer life. To withdraw from the stress and strain of practical action and from the complication of problems into the quiet cell of the inner life in order to build its domain undisturbed is the sure way to lose the inner life. The finest of all the mystical writers of the fourteenth century — the author of Theologia Germanica — knew this as fully as we of this psychologically trained generation know it. He intensely desired a rich inner life, but he saw that to be beautiful within he must live a radiant and effective life in the world of men and events. “I would fain be,” he says, “to the eternal God what a man’s hand is to a man” — i.e. he seeks, with all the eagerness of his glowing nature, to be an efficient instrument of God in the world. In the practice of the presence of God, the presence itself becomes more sure and indubitable. Religion does not consist of inward thrills and private enjoyment of God; it does not terminate in beatific vision. It is rather the joyous business of carrying the Life of God into the lives of men — of being to the eternal God what a man’s hand is to a man. There is no one exclusive “way” either to the supreme realities or to the loftiest experiences of life. The “way” which we individuals select and proclaim as the only highway of the soul back to its true home turns out to be a revelation of our own private selves fully as much as it is a revelation of a via sacra to the one goal of all human striving. Life is a very rich and complex affair and it forever floods over and inundates any feature which we pick out as essential or as pivotal to its consummation. God so completely overarches all that is and He is so genuinely the fulfillment of all which appears incomplete and potential that we cannot conceivably insist that there shall be only one way of approach from the multiplicity of the life which we know to the infinite Being whom we seek."

Ever since their founding, the Quakers have proved a stimulating and inspiriting force in the Christian Church. Standing for Jesus’ program for world peace, practicing non-resistance, and performing miracles of mercy and relief in a world of hatred, they have achieved a position almost unique in Christendom. Their astonishing history is here told by one who is of all men most fitted for the task—Dr. Rufus M. Jones, one of the founders of the American Friends Service Committee and one of the most influential Quakers of the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters of this book were given as a course of Lectures on the Modern Era Lectureship Foundation, at the University of Southern California, in April, 1929. The opening chapter is a fresh attempt to reinterpret the nature and significance of mystical experience. It carries on and aims to clarify my position in this field of religion. The other chapters are in the main historical illustrations through great personalities of the meaning and value of the mystical approach to God. It is believed that each chapter adds something further to the interpretation of mystical experience given in the first chapter, so that the book is essentially one coherent whole. - From the Introduction

Book St Paul the Hero

Download or read book St Paul the Hero written by Rufus Matthew Jones and published by Dawn Chorus Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rufus Matthew Jones, the great American Quaker philosopher, was born in South China, Maine, in 1863. He received his B.A. degree from Haverford College in 1885, an A.M. in 1886, and an LL.D. in 1922. From 1917 to 1927, and again from 1934 to 1944, he was chairman of the American Friends Service Committee for European Relief which was founded in 1917 largely through his efforts. He was serving as honorary chairman in 1947 when the Committee was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.; He is the author of a large number of works, predominantly on mysticism. He died in 1948 at Haverford. St Paul the Hero was one of Rufus Jones' few excursions into children's literature, but it was received with great acclaim, and we can only be sorry that he did not continue in this genre. It tells in a thrilling narrative the story of Saul who became St Paul, combined with intimations of the deep inner level of understanding that characterizes the many works on mysticism for which Rufus Jones is most well known.

Book Dostoevsky Kierkegaard Nietzsche Kafka

Download or read book Dostoevsky Kierkegaard Nietzsche Kafka written by William Hubben and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1997-05-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How four of Europe’s most mysterious and fascinating writers shaped the modern mind. Dostoevsky, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Kafka were all outsiders in their societies, unable to fit into the accepted nineteenth-century categories of theology, philosophy, or belles lettres. Instead, they saw themselves both as the end products of a dying civilization and as prophets of the coming chaos of the twentieth century. In this brilliant combination of biography and lucid exposition, their apocalyptic visions of the future are woven together into a provocative portrait of modernity. “This small book has a depth of insight and a comprehensiveness of treatment beyond what its modesty of size and tone indicates. William Hubben…sees the spiritual destiny of Europe as one of transcending these masters. But to be transcended, their message must first be absorbed, and that is why the study of them is so important to us now.” —William Barrett, The New York Times
