Download or read book Jonathan Meese Daniel Richter Tal R written by Roberto Ohrt and published by Verlag Fur Moderne Kunst. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Meese, Daniel Richter and Tal R ranks among contemporary art's international heavyweights. Now they have collaborated on a large-scale joint project for Holstebro Kunstmuseum.Jonathan Meese (Germany, b.1970), Daniel Richter (Germany, b.1962), and Tal R (Denmark, b.1967) are contemporaries, having in common a neo-figurative and neo-expressive approach to art-making.Individually, each artist has worked within traditional genres, but has also ventured into and experimented with ever new, more sculptural, theatrical-performative and installation-like forms. Collectively, there is much humour and existential pathos and protest at stake. They are not just colleagues but also personal friends. In the past, they have co-produced artistic projects by pairs, but never have all three come together to create a common project. 'The Men Who Fell from Earth' is a total staging of extremely rare character, created in the strong spirit of artistic collegiality and friendship.Accompanies the exhibition THE MEN WHO FELL FROM EARTH, 16 Sep 2017 - 7 Jan 2018, Holstebro Kunstmuseum, Germany.

Book excerpt: "Three international heavyweights in contemporary painting will join forces when Danish Tal R and his two German colleagues and friends, Jonathan Meese and Daniel Richter, hold a joint exhibition at Holstebro Kunstmuseum, under the title 'The Men Who Fell from Earth.' In recent decades, with an almost unrestrained energy, these three artists have made a name for themselves as significant innovators of the painting tradition. Their inspiration is often drawn from the borderline of what is generally acceptable, and the result is fabulous imagery that demonstrates great colouristic and expressive strength. Although there is sometimes a lot of humour present, the subjects addressed by Jonathan Meese, Daniel Richter and Tal R are both serious and urgent"--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: - A testimony to an exceptional friendship between artists - Numerous works of art published here for the very first time - Exhibition - Kunsthaus Stade - 19 May-23 September 2018 Owing to their achievements as radical and unique innovators of the painting tradition, Jonathan Meese (* 1970 in Tokyo), Daniel Richter (* 1962 in Eutin, Germany), and Tal R (* 1967 in Tel Aviv) have won international recognition over the last decades. In their work, the three artists refer to established ways of seeing, while at the same time distorting, expanding, or challenging them. The humorous aspect of their art always opens the door for contemporary topics, ranging from politics, society, and self-presentation, to questions about the general significance of painting. For the exhibition Bavid Dowie, Jonathan Meese, Daniel Richter, and Tal R have teamed up for the first time, in order to work and exhibit their art together. This catalog presents the works the artists developed jointly, as well as new pieces that were created individually. It thus not only provides a glimpse into this one-of-a-kind collaboration, but gives a good insight into where each one of the three outstanding artists stands at present. Text in English and German.

Book Dr Quin Medicine Man

Download or read book Dr Quin Medicine Man written by Quin John and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Refreshing and eloquent" – Libby Purves, The Times "Quin's acute powers of observation vividly convey the hinterland of the modern general hospital ... A medical memoir for the Trainspotting generation." – The Tablet *** Surgeons cut, but physicians... what do physicians actually do? And is it true that other doctors really call them 'the magicians'? John Quin worked for thirty-three years as a physician for the NHS in both Scotland and England, specialising in endocrinology. Days on the wards were uproariously funny one minute, infinitely tragic the next. Starting with a stern lesson from the president of the British Society of Gastroenterologists that the younger doctor was not 'a f****** comedian', Dr Quin, Medicine Man is packed with vividly told tales of the joy and reward of getting the diagnosis right, the disaster of getting it wrong. Darkly amusing and with a keen eye for the absurd, this sharply observed memoir is not only an acute insight into the farcical frustrations and tensions of working in a chronically underfunded system but also a timely reminder of the humanity of the NHS staff who care for us.

Download or read book Art School written by Steven Henry Madoff and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-09-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading international artists and art educators consider the challenges of art education in today's dramatically changed art world. The last explosive change in art education came nearly a century ago, when the German Bauhaus was formed. Today, dramatic changes in the art world—its increasing professionalization, the pervasive power of the art market, and fundamental shifts in art-making itself in our post-Duchampian era—combined with a revolution in information technology, raise fundamental questions about the education of today's artists. Art School (Propositions for the 21st Century) brings together more than thirty leading international artists and art educators to reconsider the practices of art education in academic, practical, ethical, and philosophical terms. The essays in the book range over continents, histories, traditions, experiments, and fantasies of education. Accompanying the essays are conversations with such prominent artist/educators as John Baldessari, Michael Craig-Martin, Hans Haacke, and Marina Abramovic, as well as questionnaire responses from a dozen important artists—among them Mike Kelley, Ann Hamilton, Guillermo Kuitca, and Shirin Neshat—about their own experiences as students. A fascinating analysis of the architecture of major historical art schools throughout the world looks at the relationship of the principles of their designs to the principles of the pedagogy practiced within their halls. And throughout the volume, attention is paid to new initiatives and proposals about what an art school can and should be in the twenty-first century—and what it shouldn't be. No other book on the subject covers more of the questions concerning art education today or offers more insight into the pressures, challenges, risks, and opportunities for artists and art educators in the years ahead. Contributors Marina Abramovic, Dennis Adams, John Baldessari, Ute Meta Bauer, Daniel Birnbaum, Saskia Bos, Tania Bruguera, Luis Camnitzer, Michael Craig-Martin, Thierry de Duve, Clémentine Deliss, Charles Esche, Liam Gillick, Boris Groys, Hans Haacke, Ann Lauterbach, Ken Lum, Steven Henry Madoff, Brendan D. Book Marianne Vitale

Download or read book Marianne Vitale written by Maurizio Cattelan and published by Snoeck. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why? Marianne Vitale (*1973 in East Rockaway, USA) presents larger-than-life steel sculptures, quite obviously rooted in the world of railways, in conjunction with large-scale installations, such as a wooden Wild West saloon bar, with foot rests still bearing the traces of its patrons. At the back of the bar in front of a black background, bizarre plaster masks are placed, their respective appearance formulated somewhere between horror and laughter. Her third group of works pertains to surfaces, such as old patched tar roofs, which she calls Roof or Shingle paintings. This enigmatic work again puts the spotlight on the great American Story and its failure. The artist resolves this strangeness in her text »Transformation rituals on the great frontier« where she recalls that women in America during the western expansion were prohibited from approaching furnaces during their menstrual periods; in Wisconsin there is actually a figure of speech whereby, during smelting, »the slag flows like the menstrual period of a woman«. Exhibition: CFA Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin, 1/5-6/6/2015

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the avant garde is highly contested, whether one consigns it to history or claims it for present-day or future uses. The first volume of The Idea of the Avant Garde – And What It Means Today provided a lively forum on the kinds of radical art theory and partisan practices that are possible in today’s world of global art markets and creative industry entrepreneurialism. This second volume presents the work of another 50 artists and writers, exploring the diverse ways that avant-gardism develops reflexive and experimental combinations of aesthetic and political praxis. The manifest strategies, temporalities, and genealogies of avant-garde art and politics are expressed through an international, intergenerational, and interdisciplinary convocation of ideas that covers the fields of film, video, architecture, visual art, art activism, literature, poetry, theatre, performance, intermedia and music.
