Book excerpt: "First as a spokesman for the Whig and then the Democratic parties, Cushing served in Congress, as the minister to China, as a general in the Mexican War, as U.S. attorney general, and as a legal advisor and diplomatic operative for Presidents Lincoln, Johnson, and Grant. With an unharnessed mind and probing intellect, Cushing inspired and infuriated contemporaries with his strident views on such topics as race relations and gender roles, national expansion, and the legitimacy of secession. While his positions generated arguments and garnered enemies, his views often mirrored those of many Americans. His abilities and talents sustained him in public service and made him one of the most outstanding and fascinating figures of the era."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly polarized political environment, the first year of the new president’s term will be especially challenging. With a fresh mandate, however, the first year also offers opportunities that may never come again. The First Year Project is a fascinating initiative by the Miller Center of the University of Virginia that brings together top scholars on the American presidency and experienced officials to explore the first twelve months of past administrations, and draw practical lessons from that history, as we inaugurate a new president in January 2017. This project is the basis for a new series of digital shorts published as Miller Center Studies on the Presidency. Presented as specially priced collections published exclusively in an ebook format, these timely examinations recognize the experiences of past presidents as an invaluable resource that can edify and instruct the incoming president. It allows students to learn anatomy within the context of many different curricular designs, and within ever-increasing time constraints. The artwork in this textbook presents the reader with a visual image that brings the text to life and presents views that will assist in the understanding and comprehension of the anatomy. - Each regional anatomy chapter consists of four consecutive sections: conceptual overview, regional anatomy, surface anatomy, and clinical cases. - The Second South Asia Edition of this textbook has two volumes: Volume One—The Body, Upper Limb, Lower Limb, Abdomen, Pelvis and Perineum; and Volume Two—Thorax, Back, Head and Neck, and Neuroanatomy. - New content has been added on the basis of updates in the Fourth International Edition, including the addition of a new chapter on neuroanatomy. - The innovative features of the First South Asia Edition such as Set Inductions, Outlines, and Flowcharts have been improved. - Students are encouraged to use online resources available on MedEnact. - A unique feature of this edition is that each chapter contains line diagrams, abbreviated as LDs, along with questions and answers. These line diagrams are sketches which are easy to draw during an examination and can help students to acquire anatomical concepts and do well in assessment. The questions and answers facilitate learning. - Competencies have been added in all the chapters since the curriculum is becoming competency based.

Download or read book Postmodern Fiction and the Break Up of Britain written by Hywel Dix and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores how British identity has been explored and renegotiated by contemporary writers. It starts by examining the new emphasis on space and place that has emerged in recent cultural analysis, and shows how this spatial emphasis informs different literary texts. Having first analysed a series of novels that draw an implicit parallel between the end of the British Empire and the break-up of the unitary British state, the study explores how contemporary writing in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales contributes to a sense of nationhood in those places, and so contributes to the break-up of Britain symbolically. Dix argues that the break-up of Britain is not limited to political devolution in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is also an imaginary process that can be found occurring on a number of other conceptual coordinates. Feminism, class, regional identities and ethnic communities are all terrains on which different writers carry out a fictional questioning of received notions of Britishness and so contribute in different ways to the break-up of Britain.
