Book America s First Battles 1776 1965

Download or read book America s First Battles 1776 1965 written by Charles E. Heller and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 1986-12-16 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, a collection of eleven original essays by many of the foremost U.S. military historians, focuses on the transition of the Army from parade ground to battleground in each of nine wars the United States has fought. Through careful analysis of organization, training, and tactical doctrine, each essay seeks to explain the strengths and weaknesses evidenced by the outcome of the first significant engagement or campaign of the war. The concluding essay sets out to synthesize the findings and to discover whether or not American first battles manifest a characteristic "rhythm." America's First Battles provides a novel and intellectually challenging view of how America has prepared for war and how operations and tactics have changed over time. The thrust of the book--the emphasis on operational history--is at the forefront of scholarly activity in military history.

Book Unit Leader Assessments of a Joint Readiness Training Center Rotation

Download or read book Unit Leader Assessments of a Joint Readiness Training Center Rotation written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For this research, leaders from a battalion that had completed a rotation through the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) 3 weeks earlier were given a questionnaire and/or were interviewed. They responded that training at the JRTC was realistic and somewhat stressful and that JRTC after-action reviews were very useful. The capabilities most important for platoon leaders at the JRTC were technical and tactical proficiency, initiative, and decision making; those for company commanders were planning, decision making, and communication. Platoon cohesion correlated significantly with perceived platoon performance (r = .40). The leaders provided many suggestions on how to train for a JRTC rotation. (cp).

Book Joint Readiness Training Center

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent experiences in Somalia, Haiti, and Bosnia-Herzegovina have made Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain (MOUT) an integral part of the Army's combat operations. Future operations will most certainly include operations in an urban environment. The JRTC MOUT complex provides an advanced collective training capability for both force-on-force and live-fire training. The complex consists of Self Airfield, Shughart-Gordon Village, and Word Military Compound. Collectively, these three facilities enable units to conduct squad to brigade operations. The airfield accommodates a company-sized airborne takedown and all three areas of the complex support air assault operations, to include landing on selected buildings. The complex is being developed and built in two phases. The August 1996 rotation marks the completion of Phase I and consists of the following capabilities.

Book Evaluating a Job Aid for Actions on Contact at the Joint Readiness Training Center

Download or read book Evaluating a Job Aid for Actions on Contact at the Joint Readiness Training Center written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present investigation sought to quantify small unit practices during actions on contact at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) and to determine the extent to which a job performance aid, the Warrior Leader's Guide for Actions on Contact, might improve unit performance. The Actions on Contact Checklist, a tool developed especially for the investigation, was used by JRTC's trainer/mentors to measure unit performance. Over the course of nine unit rotations at JRTC, 754 checklists were collected and analyzed. Some support for the efficacy of the Warrior Leader's Guide to positively influence unit performance was found, primarily in the consolidation and reorganization phase of operations. Unit strengths and weaknesses in actions on contact were identified. On all nine measures of attack execution, units that rehearsed prior to an operation performed significantly better than units that did not rehearse."--DTIC.

Book Decisive Action Training Environment at the Joint Readiness Training Center Volume XIII

Download or read book Decisive Action Training Environment at the Joint Readiness Training Center Volume XIII written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joint Readiness Training Center was established more than two decades ago as a combat training center (CTC) for joint special operations forces (SOF) and light infantry. At the core of those training objectives was the desire to exercise the collective training skills of those forces. The JRTC commitment to that goal has never wavered; it has matured through 15 years of war, absorbing the lessons of sustained combat as a whole-of-government endeavor. This newsletter looks at the manner, method, objectives, and results of collective training for warfare in the 21st century. It addresses ways to achieve unity of effort on a complex battlefield with numerous players, each with their own mission. Unity of effort is of paramount importance for success. It requires direct attention by the senior Army commander to move disparate organizations not under his control in the same direction to achieve complementary results to a common objective. A quote within this publication effectively describes this, "There was a shared vision of a solution to the challenges ahead, there was a common understanding of counterpart priorities and, most importantly, there was a trust and respect for one another that had grown."

Download or read book Frontier Forts of Iowa written by William E. Whittaker and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least fifty-six frontier forts once stood in, or within view of, what is now the state of Iowa. The earliest date to the 1680s, while the latest date to the Dakota uprising of 1862. Some were vast compounds housing hundreds of soldiers; others consisted of a few sheds built by a trader along a riverbank. Regardless of their size and function—William Whittaker and his contributors include any compound that was historically called a fort, whether stockaded or not, as well as all military installations—all sought to control and manipulate Indians to the advantage of European and American traders, governments, and settlers. Frontier Forts of Iowa draws extensively upon the archaeological and historical records to document this era of transformation from the seventeenth-century fur trade until almost all Indians had been removed from the region. The earliest European-constructed forts along the Mississippi, Des Moines, and Missouri rivers fostered a complex relationship between Indians and early traders. After the Louisiana Purchase of 1804, American military forts emerged in the Upper Midwest, defending the newly claimed territories from foreign armies, foreign traders, and foreign-supported Indians. After the War of 1812, new forts were built to control Indians until they could be moved out of the way of American settlers; forts of this period, which made extensive use of roads and trails, teamed a military presence with an Indian agent who negotiated treaties and regulated trade. The final phase of fort construction in Iowa occurred in response to the Spirit Lake massacre and the Dakota uprising; the complete removal of the Dakota in 1863 marked the end of frontier forts in a state now almost completely settled by Euro-Americans. By focusing on the archaeological evidence produced by many years of excavations and by supporting their words with a wealth of maps and illustrations, the authors uncover the past and connect it with the real history of real places. In so doing they illuminate the complicated and dramatic history of the Upper Midwest in a time of enormous change. Past is linked to present in the form of a section on visiting original and reconstructed forts today. Contributors: Gayle F. Carlson Jeffrey T. Carr Lance M. Foster Kathryn E. M. Gourley Marshall B. Book The Impact of Cohesion on Platoon Performance at the Joint Readiness Training Center

Download or read book The Impact of Cohesion on Platoon Performance at the Joint Readiness Training Center written by Guy L. Siebold and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the relationships between measures of cohesion obtained on nine U.S. Army light infantry platoons at home station and the subsequent performance of those platoons at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC). The JRTC performance was measured by observer/controllers using tank evaluation and observation checklists and also by company commanders using summary ratings. When outlier cases were controlled, bonding among leaders, soldiers, and between leaders and their soldiers was strong and correlated significantly with platoon performance as measured by the observer/controllers. Correlations with company commander ratings were positive but not significant. The strongest correlations were between the types of bonding listed above and the preparation subtask of task performance. However, because of the limited number of platoons involved, replication is needed to confirm the results, and caution must be used in drawing conclusions.

Book Unit Information Management Practices at the Joint Readiness Training Center

Download or read book Unit Information Management Practices at the Joint Readiness Training Center written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present investigation sought to quantify unit information management (IM) practices at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) and to determine the extent to which a job performance aid, the IM Guide, might improve unit IM performance. IM practices were measured by observer/controllers using the IM Checklist, a tool developed especially for the investigation. Over the course of seven unit rotations at JRTC, 758 checklists were collected and analyzed. The IM Guide was found to be of benefit to companies, but not to either battalions or platoons. Overall, units were able to address specified information requirements fairly well, though they had much greater difficulty answering implied requirements. In terms of information quality, units were better at providing accurate and reliable information than they were at providing complete and precise information. Units that included IM in their planning process and units that rehearsed their communication plans were more likely to have IM that enhanced mission accomplishment than units that did not do those two things.
