Over the last decade the coverage has doubled in Africa to 65.9 million school children, with the fastest rate of growth in Nigeria, up from 1.05 million in 2017 to 9.9 million in 2022.Nigeria has created the largest school meals program south of the Sahara by designing-in four key principles: transparency and accountability; equity; diet quality and sustainability; and growing the local economy. The programme has created 106,000 jobs, mainly for women, and provides over 200,000 local farmers with a reliable, weekly market for food, including 7.6 million locally sourced eggs and 98 metric tons of fish from local aquaculture.This sourcebook explores how the Federal government, and the State governments together created this huge program, and how they continue to work together to deliver this support daily to the nation's schoolchildren.The editors of this book were part of the growth of this exceptional national programme. This was followed by the Sale of Food Act in 1875, also in the UK, and later, in the USA, by the Food and Drugs Act of 1906. These early laws were basically designed to protect consumers against unscrupulous adulteration of foods and to safeguard consumers against the use of chemical preservatives potentially harmful to health. Subsequent laws, introduced over the course of the ensuing century by various countries and organisations, have encompassed the features of the early laws but have been far wider reaching to include legislation relating to, for example, specifIc food products, specifIc ingredients and specifIc uses. Conforming to the requirements set out in many of these laws and guidelines requires the chemical and physical analysis of foods. This may involve qualitative analysis in the detection of illegal food components such as certain colourings or, more commonly, the quantitative estimation of both major and minor food constituents. This quantitative analysis of foods plays an important role not only in obtaining the required information for the purposes of nutritional labelling but also in ensuring that foods conform to desired flavour and texture quality attributes. This book outlines the range oftechniques available to the food analyst and the theories underlying the more commonly used analytical methods in food studies.

Book excerpt: 'The Cost of Being Landlocked' proposes a new analytical framework to interpret and model the constraints faced by logistics chains on international trade corridors. The plight of landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) has naturally received special attention for decades, leading to a specific set of development priorities based upon the concept of dependence on the transit state. Therefore, the standard approach used to tackle the cost of being landlocked has been predominantly aimed at developing regional transport infrastructure and ensuring freedom of transit through regional conventions. But without sufficient attention given to the performance of logistics service delivery to traders, the standard approach is unable to address key bottleneck concerns and the factors that contribute to the cost of being landlocked. Consequently, the impact of massive investment on trade corridors could not materialize to its full extent. Based on extensive data collection in several regions of the world, this book argues that although landlocked developing countries do face high logistics costs, these costs are not a result of poor road infrastructure, since transport prices largely depend on trucking market structure and implementation of transit processes. This book suggests that high logistics costs in LLDCs are a result of low logistics reliability and predictability, which stem from rent-seeking and governance issues. 'The Cost of Being Landlocked' will serve as a useful guide for policy makers, supervisory authorities, and development agencies.

Book excerpt: New research suggests that cross-country differences in legal origin help explain differences in financial development. This paper empirically assesses two theories of why legal origin influences financial development. First, the political' channel stresses that (i) legal traditions differ in the priority they give to the rights of individual investors vis- ...-vis the state and (ii) this has repercussions for the development of property rights and financial markets. Second, the adaptability' channel holds that (i) legal traditions differ in their ability to adjust to changing commercial circumstances and (ii) legal systems that adapt quickly to minimize the gap between the contracting needs of the economy and the legal system's capabilities will foster financial development more effectively than would more rigid legal traditions. We use historical comparisons and cross-country regressions to assess the validity of these two channels. We find that legal origin matters for financial development because legal traditions differ in their ability to adapt efficiently to evolving economic conditions.
