This book was released on 1983 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A project to study the interaction of the atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers with the larger- scale motions of the sea and the air was proposed in 1966 by the Royal Meteorological Society to the Royal Society as an appropriate U.K. contribution to the Global Atmospheric Research Project. It was hoped that the project, which became the Joint Air-Sea Interaction Project, JASIN, would involve the intensive study, for about a month, of the coupled boundary layers over an area of the North Atlantic about 150 km across with use of buoys, ships, balloons and aircraft to observe the structure of the upper ocean and the lower atmosphere, and their interaction with each other and with layer-scale synoptic features. This project gradually became international and, after a series of preparatory field experiments, led to a large cooperative experiment, JASIN 1978, some of the results of which are described in this volume. The papers were produced by groups of authors to summarize the observations and their analysis in the context of the large body of complementary observations made by other participants in the project. Particular attention is paid to comparisons between the conventional observations and those obtained from the oceanographic satellite Seasat-I.

Download or read book History of the Meteorological Office written by Malcolm Walker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-14 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Walker tells the story of the UK's national meteorological service from its formation in 1854 with a staff of four to its present position as a scientific and technological institution of national and international importance with a staff of nearly two thousand. The Met Office has long been at the forefront of research into atmospheric science and technology and is second to none in providing weather services to the general public and a wide range of customers around the world. The history of the Met Office is therefore largely a history of the development of international weather prediction research in general. In the modern era it is also at the forefront of the modelling of climate change. This volume will be of great interest to meteorologists, atmospheric scientists and historians of science, as well as amateur meteorologists and anyone interested generally in weather prediction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book captures the excitement of a formative phase of UK science during and immediately following WWII. It links back to scientists working at Antarctic whaling stations and the complimentary voyages of Captain Scott's Discovery that explored the vast icy Southern Ocean, funded by a tax on whale oil. In the depths of WWII a small group of young scientists were brought together under the inspirational leadership of Dr (later Sir) George Deacon, and shortly after the end of the war, the UKis first National Institute of Oceanography was formed. The discoveries from 50 years ago underpin our modern-day science. The bookis chapters are all written and edited by NIO scientists and convey the atmosphere of work at sea in a bygone age before small computers, satellite navigation and easy communication. The book is A useful introduction for students of marine and/or environmental science. It will appeal to many scientists and the general public , to those interested in science and innovation during and after WWII and of course to many living in the Surrey who always wondered what went on in the leafy lanes that were home to NIO and its successors for almost 50 years.

Download or read book The Atmosphere and Ocean written by Neil C. Wells and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atmosphere and Ocean The Atmosphere and Ocean is a fully revised and updated student friendly physical introduction to the atmosphere and ocean. Now in its Third Edition, the book continues to provide students with an accessible description of the atmosphere and ocean with emphasis on their physical properties and interdependence. Clearly structured throughout, the book demonstrates that the atmosphere and ocean are both subject to the influence of the Earth’s rotation and therefore they have a common dynamical basis. The author clearly demonstrates the fundamental differences between the two environments and provides the reader with a much better understanding of the atmosphere and the ocean and an appreciation of their close interactive relationship. There have been many developments in the field over the past ten years and the latest edition of this highly successful textbook brings together new material on the ocean-atmosphere system and climate, the observed circulation of the atmosphere and ocean and radiation in the atmosphere and ocean. Fully revised and updated Third Edition of student friendly physical introduction to the atmosphere and ocean. Now includes new chapters on observed circulation of the atmosphere and ocean, energy flows in the ocean atmosphere system, modeling the ocean and atmosphere, the ocean atmosphere system and climate. Well structured and written in an authoritative yet accessible style suitable for 2nd and 3rd year students taking courses in meteorology, oceanography and related Earth Sciences or as an introduction for graduate students. Emphasis placed on physical properties and inter-dependence of the ocean and climate.

Download or read book The Atmospheric Boundary Layer written by J. R. Garratt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-04-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives a comprehensive and lucid account of the science of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). There is an emphasis on the application of the ABL to numerical modelling of the climate. The book comprises nine chapters, several appendices (data tables, information sources, physical constants) and an extensive reference list. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction, with chapters 2 and 3 dealing with the development of mean and turbulence equations, and the many scaling laws and theories that are the cornerstone of any serious ABL treatment. Modelling of the ABL is crucially dependent for its realism on the surface boundary conditions, and chapters 4 and 5 deal with aerodynamic and energy considerations, with attention to both dry and wet land surfaces and sea. The structure of the clear-sky, thermally stratified ABL is treated in chapter 6, including the convective and stable cases over homogeneous land, the marine ABL and the internal boundary layer at the coastline. Chapter 7 then extends the discussion to the cloudy ABL. This is seen as particularly relevant, since the extensive stratocumulus regions over the subtropical oceans and stratus regions over the Arctic are now identified as key players in the climate system. Finally, chapters 8 and 9 bring much of the book's material together in a discussion of appropriate ABL and surface parameterization schemes in general circulation models of the atmosphere that are being used for climate simulation.
