  • Pages : pages

Download or read book John Winthrop written by John Winthrop and published by . This book was released on 1642 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript, dated 1642, is probably a contemporary copy of Governor John Winthrop's (1587/88-1649) declaration in favor of the magistrates. It has been published in the Proceedings of the AAS, vol. 30 (1920), p. 218-50. The brief was apparently prepared for circulation among the population, many of whom were angered by the undemocratic decision. In the manuscript, Winthrop denied that the negative voice had actually decided the case and listed as proof the votes among the magistrates and deputies present at the time of the tally. The manuscript also contains a history or "breaveate" of the case and the general opinion of the court. Winthrop eventually published a treatise defending the right of the magistrates to a negative voice.

Book Jonathan Belcher

Download or read book Jonathan Belcher written by Michael C. Batinski and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as the eighteenth century, New England's ministers were decrying public morality. Evangelical leaders such as Jonathan Edwards called for rulers to become spiritual as well as political leaders who would renew the people's covenant with God. The prosperous merchant Jonathan Belcher (1682-1757) self-consciously strove to become such a leader, an American Nehemiah. As governor of three royal colonies and early patron of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University), Belcher became an important but controversial figure in colonial America. In this first biography of the colonial governor, Michael C. Batinski depicts a man unusually riddled with contradictions. While governor of Massachusetts, Belcher deftly maneuvered longstanding rivals toward a political settlement; yet as chief executive of New Hampshire, he plunged into bitter factional disputes that destroyed his administration. The quintessential Puritan, Belcher learned to thrive in London's cosmopolitan world and in the whiggish realm of the marketplace. He was at once the courtier and the country patriot. An insightful blend of social and political history, this biography demands that Belcher be recognized as the embodiment of the Nehemiah, perhaps as important in his own realm as Cotton Mather was in religious circles. Grappling with the contradictions of Belcher's actions, the author explains much about the complexities of the world in which Belcher lived and wielded influence.

Book The Revolutionary Writings of John Adams

Download or read book The Revolutionary Writings of John Adams written by John Adams and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolutionary Writings of John Adams presents the principal shorter writings in which Adams addresses the prospect of revolution and the form of government proper to the new United States. Though one of the principal framers of the American republic and the successor to Washington as president, John Adams receives remarkably little attention among many students of the early national period. This is especially true in the case of the periods before and after the Revolution, in which the intellectual rationale for independence and republican government was given the fullest expression. The Revolutionary Writings of John Adams illustrates that it was Adams, for example, who before the Revolution wrote some of the most important documents on the nature of the British Constitution and the meaning of rights, sovereignty, representation, and obligation. And it was Adams who, once the colonies had declared independence, wrote equally important works on possible forms of government in a quest to develop a science of politics for the construction of a constitution for the proposed republic.
