Book Chicago s Historic Hyde Park

Download or read book Chicago s Historic Hyde Park written by Susan O'Connor Davis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stretching south from 47th Street to the Midway Plaisance and east from Washington Park to the lake’s shore, the historic neighborhood of Hyde Park—Kenwood covers nearly two square miles of Chicago’s south side. At one time a wealthy township outside of the city, this neighborhood has been home to Chicago’s elite for more than one hundred and fifty years, counting among its residents presidents and politicians, scholars, athletes, and fiery religious leaders. Known today for the grand mansions, stately row houses, and elegant apartments that these notables called home, Hyde Park—Kenwood is still one of Chicago’s most prominent locales. Physically shaped by the Columbian Exposition of 1893 and by the efforts of some of the greatest architects of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries—including Daniel Burnham, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe—this area hosts some of the city’s most spectacular architecture amid lush green space. Tree-lined streets give way to the impressive neogothic buildings that mark the campus of the University of Chicago, and some of the Jazz Age’s swankiest high-rises offer spectacular views of the water and distant downtown skyline. In Chicago’s Historic Hyde Park, Susan O’Connor Davis offers readers a biography of this distinguished neighborhood, from house to home, and from architect to resident. Along the way, she weaves a fascinating tapestry, describing Hyde Park—Kenwood’s most celebrated structures from the time of Lincoln through the racial upheaval and destructive urban renewal of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s into the preservationist movement of the last thirty-five years. Coupled with hundreds of historical photographs, drawings, and current views, Davis recounts the life stories of these gorgeous buildings—and of the astounding talents that built them. This is architectural history at its best.

Download or read book A Treatise on Painting written by da Vinci Leonardo and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonardo da Vinci's 'A Treatise on Painting' is a collection of his writings on the science of painting, emphasizing his keen observation of expression and character. One of its most famous principles is the branching rule, which states that all branches of a tree put together at every stage of its height are equal in thickness to the trunk below them. With an aim to argue that painting was a science, da Vinci's work is a valuable resource for artists and art enthusiasts alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully designed and lavishly illustrated biography of one of Chicago's greatest lost buildings For six months in 1961, Richard Nickel, John Vinci, and David Norris salvaged the interior and exterior ornamentation of the Garrick Theater, Adler & Sullivan's magnificent architectural masterpiece in Chicago's theater district. The building was replaced by a parking garage, and its demolition ignited the historic preservation movement in Chicago. The Garrick (originally the Schiller Building) was built in 1892 and featured elaborate embellishments, especially in its theater and exterior, including the ornamentation and colorful decorative stenciling that would become hallmarks of Louis Sullivan's career. Reconstructing the Garrick documents the enormous salvaging job undertaken to preserve elements of the building's design, but also presents the full life story of the Garrick, featuring historic and architectural photographs, essays by prominent architectural and art historians, interviews, drawings, ephemera from throughout its lively history and details of its remarkable ornamentation--a significant resource and compelling tribute to one of Chicago's finest lost buildings. A seventy-two-page facsimile of Richard Nickel's salvage workbook is tipped into the binding.

Book Archiving Architectural Collections

Download or read book Archiving Architectural Collections written by Katherine McManus and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an early advocate of preservation, John Vinci has continued to serve as a voice for Chicago's preservation community. Throughout his career, he has worked in areas of restoration, new building construction, exhibition design, and education. Projects, such as the reconstruction of the Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room at the Art Institute of Chicago, the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio and work on the Auditorium Theater, have established Vinci as a significant figure in the historic preservation field. The collection of John Vinci's work is an exemplary resource for fellow preservationists and architects and should therefore, be made available as a professional, historical and educational reference. My thesis explores the process of archiving architectural collections, while focusing on John Vinci's work. The archived collection is intended to provide a tangible record of Vinci's significant career and varied body of work. By archiving this architectural collection and by completing and expanding upon the library's current holdings, a full documentation of Vinci's life and career was made available for research and reference as a part of the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries' collection. The components of the collected work are wide-ranging and include drawings, photographs, material swatches, letters and project files. A finding aid provides an outline of the physical and intellectual order of each series. In addition to organizing and cataloguing the extensive collection, some conservation of materials and files were required. In order to provide an effective and functional collection, housing, matting and condition concerns were addressed. The final element of the thesis project includes an interview with John Vinci, primarily to ensure that the collection was complete. Any further materials, including additional photographs, teaching files and school projects were added to the final collection. Furthermore, unidentified and miscellaneous drawings were reviewed and appropriately archived. All resources available were examined and compiled in order to provide a complete and accurate record of John Vinci's established career as an architect and preservationist.
