Book The Printed and the Built

Download or read book The Printed and the Built written by Mari Hvattum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Printed and the Built explores the intricate relationship between architecture and printed media in the fast-changing nineteenth century. Publication history is a rapidly expanding scholarly field which has profoundly influenced architectural history in recent years. Yet, while groundbreaking work has been done on architecture and printing in the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the twentieth century, the nineteenth century has received little attention. This is the omission that The Printed and the Built seeks to address, thus filling a significant gap in the understanding of architecture's cultural history. Lavishly illustrated with colourful and eclectic visual material, from panoramas to printed ephemera, adverts, penny magazines, early photography, and even crime reportage, The Printed and the Built consists of five in-depth thematic essays accompanied by 25 short pieces, each examining a particular printed form. Altogether, they illustrate how new genres communicated architecture to a mass audience, setting the stage for the modern architectural era.

Book Dickens Reynolds and Mayhew on Wellington Street

Download or read book Dickens Reynolds and Mayhew on Wellington Street written by Mary L. Shannon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A glance over the back pages of mid-nineteenth-century newspapers and periodicals published in London reveals that Wellington Street stands out among imprint addresses. Between 1843 and 1853, Household Words, Reynolds’s Weekly Newspaper, the Examiner, Punch, the Athenaeum, the Spectator, the Morning Post, and the serial edition of London Labour and the London Poor, to name a few, were all published from this short street off the Strand. Mary L. Shannon identifies, for the first time, the close proximity of the offices of Charles Dickens, G.W.M. Reynolds, and Henry Mayhew, examining the ramifications for the individual authors and for nineteenth-century publishing. What are the implications of Charles Dickens, his arch-competitor the radical publisher G.W.M. Reynolds, and Henry Mayhew being such close neighbours? Given that London was capital of more than Britain alone, what connections does Wellington Street reveal between London print networks and the print culture and networks of the wider empire? How might the editors’ experiences make us rethink the ways in which they and others addressed their anonymous readers as ’friends’, as if they were part of their immediate social network? As Shannon shows, readers in the London of the 1840s and '50s, despite advances in literacy, print technology, and communications, were not simply an ’imagined community’ of individuals who read in silent privacy, but active members of an imagined network that punctured the anonymity of the teeming city and even the empire.

Book Passion and Control Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Passion and Control Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century written by Freek Schmidt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion and Control explores Dutch architectural culture of the eighteenth century, revealing the central importance of architecture to society in this period and redefining long-established paradigms of early modern architectural history. Architecture was a passion for many of the men and women in this book; wealthy patrons, burgomasters, princes and scientists were all in turn infected with architectural mania. It was a passion shared with artists, architects and builders, and a vast cast of Dutch society who contributed to a complex web of architectural discourse and who influenced building practice. The author presents a rich tapestry of sources to reconstruct the cultural context and meaning of these buildings as they were perceived by contemporaries, including representations in texts, drawings and prints, and builds on recent research by cultural historians on consumerism, material culture and luxury, print culture and the public sphere, and the history of ideas and mentalities.

Book The Stationers Company and the Printers of London 1501 1557

Download or read book The Stationers Company and the Printers of London 1501 1557 written by Peter W. M. Blayney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 1559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major, revisionist reference work explains for the first time how the Stationers' Company acquired both a charter and a nationwide monopoly of printing. In the most detailed and comprehensive investigation of the London book trade in any period, Peter Blayney systematically documents the story from 1501, when printing first established permanent roots inside the City boundaries, until the Stationers' Company was incorporated by royal charter in 1557. Having exhaustively re-examined original sources and scoured numerous archives unexplored by others in the field, Blayney radically revises accepted beliefs about such matters as the scale of native production versus importation, privileges and patents, and the regulation of printing by the Church, Crown and City. His persistent focus on individuals - most notably the families, rivals and successors of Richard Pynson, John Rastell and Robert Redman - keeps this study firmly grounded in the vivid lives and careers of early Tudor Londoners.

Book From Palace to Power

Download or read book From Palace to Power written by Susan Foreman and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably THE book on Whitehall Despite the numerous historians during its long history, Whitehall has never been the subject of a work quite like this. Indeed, the format and structure of the book set an admirable example for dealing with other areas of important national significance. ASCHB. No street in the world can have bred more triumph and more blood than Whitehall. Its brief half mile embodies the power of empire. The power may have declined, but the architecture that was its physical expression survives. The buildings stand today as they did at the height of empire. If ever a landscape was a mirror of history, it is here in the heart of Westminster. From the Foreword by Simon Jenkins, The Times
