Book Imperialism in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Imperialism in the Twenty First Century written by John Smith and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the first Paul A. Baran-Paul M. Sweezy Memorial Award for an original monograph concerned with the political economy of imperialism, John Smith's Imperialism in the Twenty-First Century is a seminal examination of the relationship between the core capitalist countries and the rest of the world in the age of neoliberal globalization.Deploying a sophisticated Marxist methodology, Smith begins by tracing the production of certain iconic commodities-the T-shirt, the cup of coffee, and the iPhone-and demonstrates how these generate enormous outflows of money from the countries of the Global South to transnational corporations headquartered in the core capitalist nations of the Global North. From there, Smith draws on his empirical findings to powerfully theorize the current shape of imperialism. He argues that the core capitalist countries need no longer rely on military force and colonialism (although these still occur) but increasingly are able to extract profits from workers in the Global South through market mechanisms and, by aggressively favoring places with lower wages, the phenomenon of labor arbitrage. Meticulously researched and forcefully argued, Imperialism in the Twenty-First Century is a major contribution to the theorization and critique of global capitalism.

Book The ABC Movie of the Week

Download or read book The ABC Movie of the Week written by Michael McKenna and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 23, 1969, five years after the first made-for-television movie premiered, the ABC network broadcast Seven in Darkness. This was the first television film for an anthology show called the Tuesday Night Movie of the Week. Dedicating ninety minutes of weekly airtime to a still-emerging genre was a financial risk for the third-place network—a risk that paid off. The films were so successful that in 1972 the network debuted The Wednesday Movie of the Week. Although most of the movies are no longer remembered, a handful are still fondly recalled by viewers today, including Duel, Brian’s Song, and The Night Stalker. The series also showcased pilot films for many eventual series, such as Alias Smith and Jones, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Starsky and Hutch. By the end of both shows’ regular runs in the spring of 1975, the network had broadcast more than 200 made-for-television films. In The ABC Movie of the Week: Big Movies for the Small Screen, Michael McKenna examines this programming experiment that transformed the television landscape and became a staple of broadcast programming for several years. The author looks at how the revolving films showcased the right mixture of romantic comedy, action, horror, and social relevance to keep viewers interested week after week. McKenna also chronicles how the ratings success led to imitations from the other networks, resulting in a saturation of television movies. As a cultural touchstone for millions who experienced the first run and syndicated versions of these films, The ABC Movie of the Week is a worthy subject ofstudy. Featuring a complete filmography of all 240 movies with credit information and plot summaries, a chronology, and a list of pilots—both failed and successful—this volume will be valuable to television historians and scholars, as well as to anyone interested in one of the great triumphs of network programming.

Book How Did I Fund My Startup

Download or read book How Did I Fund My Startup written by Mehul Darooka and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going through the stories of each of the entrepreneur’s profile in the book, what also struck me was the sheer range of the startups from healthy eating to quirky products to bargain solutions to anti-virus software, the products conceived, devised, and developed span a wide canvas. While some are completely new to the market, others have taken on competition from already existing similar products, which they have managed to counter simply by making theirs a better and more user-friendly version. This again brings home yet another tried and tested rule that however crowded the marketplace is, there is always room for quality. This is also precisely why in a market overcrowded with books on entrepreneurship, you will soon see why this one flies off the shelves with such ease. Finally, I would like to point out that while at the outset this book may seem like a perfect guide for those wanting to get into start-ups and looking for viable ways of funding, it’s as much a treasured read for investors wanting to put their money into sound ventures. The book enables one to get a detailed insight into what works and what doesn’t in the market. Too often one tends to reject ideas that look untenable and, hence, un-fundable, and then much to the anguish of those who first rejected it, they turn out to be veritable blockbusters! Haven’t we all heard of Facebook rejecting WhatsApp cofounder Brian Acton for a job and then paying $19 billion to buy what could have been its own homegrown product?

Book Portraits of primitives

Download or read book Portraits of primitives written by Susan Debra Blum and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2001 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnicity is a highly politicized issue in contemporary China. Twentieth-century nation-building has been intimately involved with classification of ChinaOs fifty-five ethnic minorities and with fostering harmony and unity among nationalities. Officially sanctioned social science classifies the majority group, the so-called Han, at the pinnacle of modernization and civilization and most other groups as Oprimitive.O In post-socialist China, popular conceptions of self, person, and nation intersect with political and scholarly concerns with identity, sometimes contradicting them and sometimes reinforcing them. In Portraits of OPrimitives, O Susan D. Blum explores how Han in the city of Kunming, in southwest China, regard ethnic minorities and, by extension, themselves. She sketches Oportraits, O or cognitive prototypes, of ethnic groups in a variety of contexts, explaining the perceived visibility of each group (which almost never correlates with size of population). Ideas of OHannessO can be understood in part through Han desire to identify unique characteristics in ethnic minorities and also through Han celebration of the differences that distance minorities. The book considers questions of identity, alterity, and self in the context of a complex nation-state, employing methods from linguistic anthropology and psychological anthropology, as well as other forms of cultural analysis. Providing nuanced views of relationships among political, scholarly, and popular models of identity, this book will be an invaluable guide for those working in China studies, anthropology, and ethnic studies.
