Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Smith, Democrat; His Two Days' Canvass (Sunday Included): For the Office of Mayor of the City of Bunkumville Mr. Publisher: John made me promise if I should ever have this MS. printed that I would explain his present views, as he anticipates, like one or two other American citizens, to be "dragged out" again for some office, by "many voters." He don't wish it understood that he applies these old by-gone charges of little things to his present constituency. Not at all; he wishes them to understand that he has a larger opinion of their qualifications as workers and voters now; and with all the advantages they have enjoyed in the meantime of a liberal political education, he is certain that in the next canvass he can confidently look for vastly bigger things. Comprehensively, against no particular nationality that exercises a controlling influence in politics, he brings no particular charge of no particular corruption. This sweeping disavowal he hopes satisfactory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book John Smith

Download or read book John Smith written by J. Gordon Brown and published by Mainstream Publishing Company. This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Smith died on 12 May 1994, less that two years into his leadership of the Labour Party. In this biography, some of those people closest to Smith express their feelings about the man. His widow, Elizabeth, writes about how his life in politics and devotion to the Labour Party shaped their family life and about the faith that enabled her husband to keep up the fight when times were troubled. By drawing together some of his writings and speeches, Smith's close friend and political colleague, Gordon Brown, examines the passions and purposes of the man. This book also contains an assessment of John Smith as a politician and leader by journalist and broadcaster James Naughtie, who knew Smith well, having watched him since his time as Devolution Minister in the 1970s. He puts Smith's life in perspective, examining his background and the political times in which he moved. A further insight is gained into Smith from a selection of his articles and writings stretching back to the 1960s, collected together by his family. This book is illustrated with many previously unpublished family photographs.

Book John Smith

Download or read book John Smith written by Mark Stuart and published by Politico's Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When John Smith died in May 1994 a nation mourned for an immensely popular politician who would have gone on to become a great Labour Prime Minister. Now, over ten years later, his family have granted Mark Stuart their full cooperation, and unlimited access to John Smiths private papers, to write the definitive, authorised account of his life. Stuart tells of Smith's strict Presbyterian upbringing and his youthful rebellion at Glasgow university where he started his lifelong friendship with Donald Dewer, through his stellar career at the Scottish bar and onto his political journey to become the most popular Labour leader of modern times. But the biography also reveals a darker side to personality: his heavy drinking and explosive temper which threatened to ruin his marriage. Peppered with insights and anecdotes culled from over three years of research and interviews, Mark Stuart has written the most important political biography of 2005.

Book Frontier Swashbuckler

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dick Steward
  • Publisher : University of Missouri Press
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 0826263437
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Frontier Swashbuckler written by Dick Steward and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few frontiersmen in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century epitomized the reckless energies of the West and the lust for adventure as did John Smith T pioneer, gunfighter, entrepreneur, militia colonel, miner, judge, and folk hero. In this fascinating biography, Dick Steward traces the colorful Smith T's life from his early days in Virginia through his young adulthood. He then describes Smith T's remarkable career in the wilds of Missouri and his armed raids to gain land from Indians, Spaniards, and others. Born into the fifth generation of Virginia gentry, young Smith first made his name on the Tennessee frontier. It was there that he added the "T" to his name to distinguish his land titles and other enterprises from those of the hosts of other John Smiths. By the late 1790s he owned or laid claim to more than a quarter million acres in Tennessee and northern Alabama. In 1797, Smith T moved to Missouri, then a Spanish territory, and sought to gain control of its lead-mining district by displacing the most powerful American in the region, Moses Austin. He acquired such public positions as judge of the court of common pleas, commissioner of weights and levies, and lieutenant colonel of the militia, which enabled him to mount a spirited assault on Austin's virtual monopoly of the lead mines. Although neither side emerged a winner from that ten-year-old conflict, it was during this period that Smith T's fame as a gunfighter and duelist spread across the West. Known as the most dangerous man in Missouri, he was said to have killed fourteen men in duels. Smith T was also recognized by many for his good works. He donated land for churches and schools and was generous to the poor and downtrodden. He epitomized the opening of the West, helping to build towns, roads, and canals and organizing trading expeditions. Even though Smith T was one of the most notorious characters in Missouri history, by the late nineteenth century he had all but disappeared from the annals of western history. Frontier Swashbuckler seeks to rescue both the man and the legend from historical obscurity. At the same time, it provides valuable insights into the economic, political, and social dynamics of early Missouri frontier history.

Book Maryland Politics and Government

Download or read book Maryland Politics and Government written by John T. Willis and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tucked between the larger commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia and overshadowed by the political maneuverings of its neighbor, Washington, D.C., Maryland has often been overlooked and neglected in studies of state governmental systems. With the publication of Maryland Politics and Government, the challenging demographic diversity, geographic variety, and dynamic Democratic pragmatism of Maryland finally get their due. Two longtime political analysts, Herbert C. Smith and John T. Willis, conduct a sustained inquiry into topics including the Maryland identity, political history, and interest groups; the three branches of state government; and policy areas such as taxation, spending, transportation, and the environment. Smith and Willis also establish a “Two Marylands” model that explains the dominance of the Maryland Democratic Party, established in the post–Civil War era, that persists to this day even in a time of political polarization. Unique in its scope, detail, and coverage, Maryland Politics and Government sets the standard for understanding the politics of the Free State (or, alternately, the Old Line State) for years to come.
