Book An Anthology of British Neo Latin Literature

Download or read book An Anthology of British Neo Latin Literature written by Gesine Manuwald and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a wide range of sample passages from literature written in Latin in the British Isles during the period from about 1500 to 1800. It includes a general introduction to and bibliography to the Latin literature of these centuries, as well as Latin texts with English translations, introductions and notes. These texts present a rich panorama of the different literary genres, styles and themes flourishing at the time, illustrating the role of Latin texts in the development of literary genres, the diversity of authors writing in Latin in early modern Britain, and the importance of Latin in contemporary political, religious and scientific debates. The collection, which includes both texts by well-known authors (such as John Milton, Thomas More and George Buchanan) and previously unpublished items, can be used as a point of entry for students at school and university level, but will also be of interest to specialists in a number of academic disciplines.

Book The Neo Latin Epigram

Download or read book The Neo Latin Epigram written by Susanna de Beer and published by Universitaire Pers Leuven. This book was released on 2009 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epigram is certainly one of the most intriguing, while at the same time most elusive, genres of Neo-Latin literature. From the end of the fifteenth century, almost every humanist writer who regarded himself a true "poeta" had composed a respectable number of epigrams. Given our sense of poetical aesthetics, be it idealistic, postidealistic, modern, or postmodern, the epigrammatic genre is difficult to understand. Because of its close ties with the historical and social context, it does not fit any of these aesthetic approaches. By presenting various epigram writers, collections, and subgenres from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, this volume offers a first step toward a better understanding of some of the features of humanist epigram literature.

Download or read book Epic and Epigram written by David R. Slavitt and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David R. Slavitt’s affectionate translations of epigrams by sixteenth-century Welsh academic John Owen transmute a careful selection of the writer’s work into a vision of life, and in so doing bring Owen into conversation with the present day. Pithy, quick, favoring balance and economy over elaboration of style, the epigram is difficult in any language; that Owen mastered it in a language other than his own attests to his immense talent. Owen’s small treasures go directly to the core: “At your coming into the world, you gave a cry / of protest: why then protest that you must die?” Duessa’s Version: A Dirge in Seven Canticles offers an irreverent and provocative recapitulation of The Faerie Queene, as told by Duessa, the mutable sorceress of Spenser’s epic poem. Slavitt invests her with an unforgettable voice—outraged, profane, wise, and wickedly funny—and an exasperated contempt for the hero, Spenser’s Redcrosse Knight. Duessa’s retelling of The Faerie Queene becomes the scaffolding upon which Slavitt hangs his reflections on twentieth-century civilization and culture that are indebted at once to intelligent observation, to Spenser, and to Borscht Belt comedy. Here are virtuoso performances by a poet with resources of wit and erudition that are nothing short of astonishing. These masterly translations are bound “to get him—or at least his ghost—invited back.”
