In his famous novel, Man Alone, he depicted it as a tough, often heartless country, characterised by the solitary figure who has come to symbolise the male New Zealand psyche. He wrote more warmly of the place and the people in the poignant memoir, Report on Experience, published after his death. Mulgan was a glamorous figure: handsome, gifted and good at anything he attempted. His last years were spent fighting in the Allied cause in Egypt and Greece, where he distinguished himself. But there were darker threads, too, which culminated in his decision to take his own life in Cairo, just after the end of the war and aged only 33. In this penetrating biography, Vincent O'Sullivan draws on a large collection of personal papers, official records and contemporary memoirs to paint a vivid portrait of a man who came to represent so much about his country and his time.

When it was republished in New Zealand in 1949, after the author's suicide in Cairo in 1945, the publisher Paul's Book Arcade made a number of changes for unknown reasons. This edition restores John Mulgan's original text for the first time.Johnson, an English WWI veteran, comes to New Zealand to find a new life. In Auckland he is caught up in the Great Depression riots, and heads south to the central North Island, where he work as a farm hand. An affair with his boss's wife and the accidental killing of his boss cause him to flee across rough hill country, and by the end of the novel he is contemplating leaving the country to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Ananthropocentric Purposivism claims that there is a cosmic purpose, but human beings are irrelevant to it. Purpose in the Universe develops a philosophical case for Ananthropocentric Purposivism that it is at least as strong as the case for either theism or atheism. The book borrows traditional theist arguments to defend a cosmic purpose. These include cosmological, teleological, ontological, meta-ethical, and mystical arguments. It then borrows traditional atheist arguments to reject a human-centred purpose. These include arguments based on evil, diversity, and the scale of the universe. Mulgan also highlights connections between morality and metaphysics, arguing that evaluative premises play a crucial and underappreciated role in metaphysical debates about the existence of God, and Ananthropocentric Purposivism mutually supports an austere consequentialist morality based on objective values. He concludes that, by drawing on a range of secular and religious ethical traditions, a non-human-centred cosmic purpose can ground a distinctive human morality. Our moral practices, our view of the moral universe, and our moral theory are all transformed if we shift from the familiar choice between a universe without meaning and a universe where humans matter to the less self-aggrandising thought that, while it is about something, the universe is not about us.
