Book The Works of John Knox Volumes 1 and 2 History of the Reformation in Scotland

Download or read book The Works of John Knox Volumes 1 and 2 History of the Reformation in Scotland written by John Knox and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 1268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Knox (1514-1572) was more a reformer of the Scottish Kirk than he was a systematic theologian, as his collected works will attest. Knox had a profound influence upon theological and ecclesiological developments in Scotland both purely by the force of his personality and by the role he played in shaping the Scots Confession and the Book of Common Order. Knox was an ordained priest and served as a tutor prior to his conversion to Protestantism. Volumes One and Two: Knox's famous 'History of the Reformation in Scotland'. Apologetics as much as history, 'History of the Reformation in Scotland' was immediately seized and suppressed when it initially appeared, yet it has remained available in various editions for over 400 years. Volume Three: 'Earliest Writings', 1548-1554 Volume Four: 'Writings from Frankfurt and Geneva'. These writings in exile include Knox's famous 'First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women', his violent diatribe against Mary of Guise. Volume Five: 'On Predestination' and other writings. 'On Predestination, in Answer to the Cavillations by an Anabaptist' is Knox's longest theological work and presents a position of rigid predestinationism. Volume Six: Letters, Prayer, and other shorter writings with a sketch of his life.

Book excerpt: The Service for the Lord's Day describes the general format or ordering of worship in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A). The creation of the service for the Lord's Day was one of the most positive contributions of the Worship Book of 1970. The Presbyterian Supplemental Liturgical Resource (SLT) series includes liturgies that were used on a trial basis in preparation for the development of the Book of Common Worship. Though superseded by the Book of Common Worship, SLR resources remain valuable, both for the variety of liturgical texts they contain and for the commentary on the text, which contains rich historical, theological, and practical background.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Knox, Vol. 1 of 2: A Biography The present work is meant as a companion to one which I published some years since on Knoxs' fellow-countryman and contemporary, George Buchanan. Each in his own way, these two Scotsmen were representative men of their century; and the history of their life and work belongs not merely to their own country but to the general development of Europe. An adequate account of Buchanan implied an attempt to sketch the transition from mediævalism to that phase of humanism of which he was at once so strenuous a champion and so distinguished an ornament. But if Buchanan represented so brilliantly the intellectual side of the great revolution of the sixteenth century, Knox is no less eminent as a type of the new theology and religion. In a degree that has not been fully apprehended, it will be seen that in England and on the Continent Knox exercised an influence on religious thought and feeling which fairly entitles him to be regarded as a figure of European importance.
