Download or read book John Hart s Pronunciation of English Classic Reprint written by Otto Jespersen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Hart's Pronunciation of English Hart's Orthographic has been very little used by recent writers on the history of English sounds, and where it is mentioned, it is generally with a sneer. This is probably due to the depreciatory remarks made by Gill and Ellis. Of the former's criticism I shall have occasion to speak later; here I shall only remark that Gill, not withstanding his criticism, applies to Hart's book or system of transcription the expression bene facta. Book The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism Volume 3 The Renaissance

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism Volume 3 The Renaissance written by George Alexander Kennedy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1999 volume was the first to explore as part of an unbroken continuum the critical legacy both of the humanist rediscovery of ancient learning and of its neoclassical reformulation. Focused on what is arguably the most complex phase in the transmission of the Western literary-critical heritage, the book encompasses those issues that helped shape the way European writers thought about literature from the late Middle Ages to the late seventeenth century. These issues touched almost every facet of Western intellectual endeavour, as well as the historical, cultural, social, scientific, and technological contexts in which that activity evolved. From the interpretative reassessment of the major ancient poetic texts, this volume addresses the emergence of the literary critic in Europe by exploring poetics, prose fiction, contexts of criticism, neoclassicism, and national developments. Sixty-one chapters by internationally respected scholars are supported by an introduction, detailed bibliographies for further investigation and a full index.

Book Letter Perfect

Download or read book Letter Perfect written by David Sacks and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fun, lively, and learned excursion into the alphabet—and cultural history. Letters are tangible language. Joining together in endless combinations to actually show speech, letters convey our messages and tell our stories. While we encounter these tiny shapes hundreds of times a day, we take for granted the long, fascinating history behind one of the most fundamental of human inventions: the alphabet. The heart of the book is the 26 fact-filled “biographies” of letters A through Z, each one identifying the letter’s particular significance for modern readers, tracing its development from ancient forms, and discussing its noteworthy role in literature and other media. We learn, for example, why the letter X has a sinister and sexual aura, how B came to signify second best, why the word “mother” in many languages starts with M, and what is the story of O. Packed with information and lavishly illustrated, Letter Perfect is accessible, entertaining, and essential to the appreciation of our own language.

Book The Standard of Pronunciation in English Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Standard of Pronunciation in English Classic Reprint written by Thomas R. Lounsbury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard of Pronunciation in English A complete list of the words, the pro nunciation of which has for any reason received consideration in the body of the work, can be found at the end. The number of these is large; there would have been no difficulty in making it very much larger. In no case, however, have they been introduced for any other pur pose than to illustrate a principle; and if those given fail to convince the reader of the truth of the views here advanced, it would be useless to multiply examples. Pains have further been taken to select, whenever possible, words in regard to which exists the interest of present con troversy. About the propriety or im propriety of the pronunciation in any given case no Judgment is expressed. My office has been to record, to the best of my knowledge, differences of opinion and of practice which have prevailed in the past or are prevailing now.
