Book John Cappas

Download or read book John Cappas written by John Louis Cappas and published by . This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the Chicago criminal legend, John Louis Cappas. To crime buffs, Tall Money is a hellacious and felonious Chicago epic. To younger readers, it's a cautionary and wild tale of drugs and treachery aimed at a generation steeped in bling, casual violence, materialism and coming-of-age incarceration. Tall Money is Risky Business gone terribly, terribly awry. "The soul I once thought John had lost is now seen in all of its human glory. The world of crime and punishment does not produce success stories with any regularity or certainty. I consider John Cappas to be a success story and I am now proud to say I know him well. The best part of my job is when the faith that is placed in another person proves to be justified. John has achieved in ways I never imagined and, I think, will do so even more in the future." Charles P. Kocoras United States District Judge June 26, 2012

Book Against the American Dream

Download or read book Against the American Dream written by Russell Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being one of the most influential, revered, and talked about American writers of the 20th century, few critics have bothered to take Charles Bukowski seriously as a writer. Praise has been muted and any analysis of his writing has either been superficial, hostile or conspicuous by its absence. Until now. In this challenging and perceptive collection of essays, never before published in Britain, Russell Harrison puts the writing of legendary barfly Bukowski under the microscope to help readers gain a better understanding of the great man's work. Divided into two sections - essays on his poetry and then his fiction - Against the American Dream digs deep beneath the surface of Bukowski's writing, citing his key influences, and paying particular heed to Bukowski's complex relationship with labour, class and women.

Book Radical Educators Rearticulating Education and Social Change

Download or read book Radical Educators Rearticulating Education and Social Change written by Jennifer Gale de Saxe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of six case studies of teacher agency in action, centering on voices of educators who engaged in activist work throughout the history of education in the US. Through a lens of teacher agency and resistance, chapter authors explore the stories of individual educators to determine how particular historical and cultural contexts contributed to these educators’ activist efforts. By analyzing specific modes and methods of resistance found within diverse communities throughout the last century of US education, this book helps to identify and place into theoretical and historical context an underemphasized narrative of professional teacher-activists within American education.

Book Operation Family Secrets

Download or read book Operation Family Secrets written by Frank Calabrese, Jr. and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chilling true story of how the son of the most violent mobster in Chicago helped bring down the last great American crime syndicate: the one-hundred-year-old Chicago Outfit. In Operation Family Secrets, Frank Calabrese, Jr. reveals for the first time the outfit’s “made” ceremony and describes being put to work alongside his father and uncle in loan sharking, gambling, labor racketeering, and extortion. As members of the outfit, they plotted the slaying of a fellow gangster, committed the bombing murder of a trucking executive, the gangland execution of two mobsters—whose burial in an Indiana cornfield was reenacted in Martin Scorsese’s blockbuster film Casino—and numerous other hits. The Calabrese Crew’s colossal earnings and extreme ruthlessness made them both a dreaded criminal gang and the object of an intense FBi inquiry. When Frank Jr., his father, and Uncle Nick are convicted on racketeering violations, “Junior” and “Senior” are sent to the same federal penitentiary in Michigan. It's there that Frank Jr. makes the life-changing decision to go straight. But he needs to keep his father behind bars in order to regain control of his life and save his family. So Frank Jr. makes a secret deal with prosecutors, and for six months—unmonitored and unprotected—he wears a wire as his father recounts decades of hideous crimes. Frank Jr.’s cooperation with the FBI for virtually no monetary gain or special privileges helped create the government’s “Operation Family Secrets” campaign against the Chicago outfit, which reopened eighteen unsolved murders, implicated twelve La Cosa Nostra soldiers and two outfit bosses, and became one of the largest organized crime cases in U.S. history. Operation Family Secrets intimately portrays how organized crime rots a family from the inside out while detailing Frank Jr.’s deadly prison-yard mission, the FBI’s landmark investigation, and the U.S. attorney’s office’s daring prosecution of America’s most dangerous criminal organization.

Book Psychological Assessment in South Africa

Download or read book Psychological Assessment in South Africa written by Sumaya Laher and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the research related to psychological assessment across South Africa. The thirty-six chapters provide a combination of psychometric theory and practical assessment applications in order to combine the currently disparate research that has been conducted locally in this field. Existing South African texts on psychological assessment are predominantly academic textbooks that explain psychometric theory and provide brief descriptions of a few testing instruments. Psychological Assessment in South Africa provides in-depth coverage of a range of areas within the broad field of psychological assessment, including research conducted with various psychological instruments. The chapters critically interrogate the current Eurocentric and Western cultural hegemonic practices that dominate the field of psychological assessment. The book therefore has the potential to function both as an academic text for graduate students, as well as a specialist resource for professionals, including psychologists, psychometrists, remedial teachers and human resource practitioners.

Book The future of dialects

Download or read book The future of dialects written by Marie-Hélène Côté and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional dialects have been encroached upon by the increasing mobility of their speakers and by the onslaught of national languages in education and mass media. Typically, older dialects are “leveling” to become more like national languages. This is regrettable when the last articulate traces of a culture are lost, but it also promotes a complex dynamics of interaction as speakers shift from dialect to standard and to intermediate compromises between the two in their forms of speech. Varieties of speech thus live on in modern communities, where they still function to mark provenance, but increasingly cultural and social provenance as opposed to pure geography. They arise at times from the need to function throughout the different groups in society, but they also may have roots in immigrants’ speech, and just as certainly from the ineluctable dynamics of groups wishing to express their identity to themselves and to the world. The future of dialects is a selection of the papers presented at Methods in Dialectology XV, held in Groningen, the Netherlands, 11-15 August 2014. While the focus is on methodology, the volume also includes specialized studies on varieties of Catalan, Breton, Croatian, (Belgian) Dutch, English (in the US, the UK and in Japan), German (including Swiss German), Italian (including Tyrolean Italian), Japanese, and Spanish as well as on heritage languages in Canada.
