Book excerpt: The first shot of the American Civil War was not fired on April 12, 1861, in Charleston, South Carolina, but instead came on October 16, 1859, in Harpers Ferry, Virginia—or so claimed former slave turned abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The shot came like a meteor in the dark. John Brown, the infamous fighter on the Kansas plains and detester of slavery, led a band of nineteen men on a desperate nighttime raid that targeted the Federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. There, they planned to begin a war to end slavery in the United States. But after 36 tumultuous hours, John Brown’s Raid failed, and Brown himself became a prisoner of the state of Virginia. Brown’s subsequent trial further divided north and south on the issue of slavery as Brown justified his violent actions to a national audience forced to choose sides. Ultimately, Southerners cheered Brown’s death at the gallows while Northerners observed it with reverence. The nation’s dividing line had been drawn. Herman Melville and Walt Whitman extolled Brown as a “meteor” of the war. Roughly one year after Brown and his men attacked slavery in Virginia, the nation split apart, fueled by Brown’s fiery actions. John Brown’s Raid tells the story of the first shots that led to disunion. Richly filled with maps and images, it includes a driving and walking tour of sites related to Brown’s Raid so visitors today can follow the path of America’s meteor.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Brown: A Retrospect Nearly two thousand years ago, at the hour of noon, a motley throng of people might have been seen pouring forth from the gates of a far Eastern city and moving towards a hill called Calvary. Amidst soldiers and civilians, both friends and foes, the central figure is that of a man scarcely more than thirty years of age. He has all the attributes, in form and features, of true manliness. A disinterested judge has just declared that he finds nothing amiss in him but the rabble cry out, all the more, crucify him. While ardently loved by a devoted few in that tumultuous crowd, he is, to all the rest, an object of severest scorn, the butt of ribald jest. Wearing his crown of thorns, he is made to bear, till he faints un der his burden, the very instrument of his torture. His Roman executioners, giving to him the punishment accorded to thieves and robbers, have imposed upon him the most ignominious fate possible, - death upon the cross. A century before, Cicero had said It is an outrage to bind a Roman citizen to scourge him is an atrocious crime to put him to death is almost parricide but to crucify him - what shall I call it? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Brown Await the issue. In all battles, if you await the issue, each fighter has prospered according to his right. His right and his might, at the close of the account, were one and the same. He has fought with all his might, and in exact proportion to all his right he has prevailed. His very death is no victory over him. He dies indeed; but his work lives, very truly lives. A heroic Wallace, quartered on the scaffold, cannot hinder that Scotland become, one day, a part of England: but he does hinder that it become, on unfair terms, a part of it; commands still, as with a god's voice, from his old Valhalla and Temple of the Brave, that there be a just real union as of brother and brother, not a false and merely semblant one as of slave and master. Book John Brown Abolitionist

Download or read book John Brown Abolitionist written by David S. Reynolds and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative new examination of John Brown and his deep impact on American history.Bancroft Prize-winning cultural historian David S. Reynolds presents an informative and richly considered new exploration of the paradox of a man steeped in the Bible but more than willing to kill for his abolitionist cause. Reynolds locates Brown within the currents of nineteenth-century life and compares him to modern terrorists, civil-rights activists, and freedom fighters. Ultimately, he finds neither a wild-eyed fanatic nor a Christ-like martyr, but a passionate opponent of racism so dedicated to eradicating slavery that he realized only blood could scour it from the country he loved. By stiffening the backbone of Northerners and showing Southerners there were those who would fight for their cause, he hastened the coming of the Civil War. This is a vivid and startling story of a man and an age on the verge of calamity.

Download or read book John Brown and His Men written by Richard J. Hinton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Brown and His Men: With Some Account of the Roads They Travelled to Reach Harper's Ferry IT is the cant of to-day to sneer at Sacrifice. It is not scientific to act without a visible reward or hope of material success. It is scientific to assume that sacrifice is but another and, it may be, foolish form Of Self-love. Nevertheless, sacrifices are made! Defenders of systems always assume that the majestic forces Of Religion, the exalted functions Of Order and Justice, or those within the shimmering arena of Knowledge, belong to them alone. They declare that he who resists should die as the fool dieth. Perhaps the lives I have outlined herein may help to prove that true and natural religion, that wisdom and knowledge, are also united, not divorced This book may show, Ihope, that generosity remains to bless our human lives; that an integral part Of manhood and woman hood is service from each to all, for the life of each and the advancement of all!
