Download or read book The Vision Splendid written by Stephanie Owen Reeder and published by National Library Australia. This book was released on 2011 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vision Splendid features the sketchbooks of 22 nineteenth-century artists, ranging from well-known professionals like Eugene von Gurard and John Glover to amateurs about whom little is known. These artists, engineers, surveyors, military men, solicitors, public servants and pastoralists all delighted in recording what they saw and then sharing it with family, friends and the wider public. The sketches reveal what colonial life in Australia was like at that time, both in the country and in the city, and the challenges the artists faced depicting landscapes that were so different from those in Europe.
Download or read book John and Charles Enys written by Jenny Abrahamson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John and Charles Enys: Castle Hill Runholders (1864-1891) records the story of two Cornish brothers who ran the Castle Hill sheep run for more than 25 years in the late 19th century. Extracts from letters by both brothers and paintings by Charles that they sent to their family at Enys in Cornwell give a fascinating insight into a lost way of life. This book records the story of these neglected pioneers who painted and wrote about their adventures. The paintings by Charles Enys now mainly in the National Library of Australia are matched by photographs taken John O'Malley of today's Castle Hill. Historic photographs complement the paintings (some of which Charles painted using photographs). Other John O'Malley photographs feature the stunning scenery of Castle Hill. Pioneer sheep farmers, John and Charles Enys, enjoyed an adventurous life. While at times busy mustering and shearing they also hunted, fished, rode, went boating. As well they explored the hills and valleys collecting interesting specimens of rocks, fossils, moa bones, plants and insects. This book tells of the importance of John Enys in the early Canterbury settlement. He served on many committees, including the Selwyn County Council and the Canterbury Provincial Council. He shared an interest in nature with Julius von Haast, and was involved in founding of Canterbury Museum and the public library. He was a great collector of species and wrote academic papers about them. Charles sketched images of the views around their home and neighbouring homesteads, such as Craigieburn, Grasmere, Cora Lynn and Mt White. His paintings included landscape features such as waterfalls, mountains, rivers, lakes and the limestone rocks characteristic of Castle Hill. Unpublished letters from Enys and Porter family members add to the story.

Download or read book The Road To Castle Hill written by Christine Fernyhough and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new life running a high country sheep station in New Zealand. Christine Fernyhough is well known as a leading Auckland philanthropist, having set up Books in Homes and then the Gifted Kids Programme for high achieving children in low decile schools. In 2003 she was a recent widow when she spied an advertisement for the sale of the legendary Castle Hill Station, near Porters Heights in the Canterbury alps. A woman of energy and enterprise, she bought it and so began a new life learning to run a high country farm at some of the highest elevations in the South Island. This joyful book tells of the trials, tribulations and triumphs of high country life. Christine has thrown herself into station life with gusto, learning to ride so she can join musters in the back country, feeding out to her stock during the disastrous snowstorm of 2006, training a sheep dog, buying stock at the sales and getting on famously with the colourful local characters who are her neighbours, diversifying the station - and proving that she is not a city slicker on a dalliance. Warm and humorous, this inspirational book tells the story of a woman bold enough to do what many urbanites dream of: embark on an entirely new life and throw herself into a considerable challenge. Beautifully illustrated, The Road to Castle Hill is also a celebration of New Zealand's high-country way of life.
