Book The Rude Hand of Innovation

Download or read book The Rude Hand of Innovation written by David G. Hackett and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This path-breaking study analyzes the social and religious transformation of Albany, New York, from the town's colonial origins through industrialization in the early nineteenth century. Rather than see the transformation of traditional societies as a process of modernization, Hackett adopts a broader conception of religion as a cultural system and argues that culture influences social order differently in different historical periods. During most of Albany's colonial period, the Dutch townspeople absorbed British people and customs into their Calvinist way of life. Following the Revolution, large scale immigration, urbanization, and the initial spurt of an industrial economy transformed Albany into a bustling commercial center. At the same time new political and religious ideologies that disagreed among themselves yet together advocated economic growth, democracy, education, and individual rights, challenged and finally replaced Calvinism. Drawing on the resources of sociology, social history, and religion, this study illuminates not only the social history of Albany but also presents a new interpretation of the relationship between religion and social order in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketch of Joel Munsell "To Begin with time oat of mind, the autobiographer's first period, 'I was born' on Monday, April 13, 1808... To prevent all future dispute, and that the place of my birth may not be made the subject of contention, I deem it necessary to mention that this little village [Northfield, Mass.] is entitled to all the honor of that event. The fate of Homer should forewarn all geniuses to leave the place of their nativity on record." Thus playfully wrote the famous printer of Albany in a diary begun at the age of twenty, when he had charge of a bookstore in that city. Like so many thousands of worthy citizens in the villages of New England, his father was in humble circumstances, and as the boys grew to manhood they were compelled to colonize and begin the battle of life for themselves. The residence of his grandfather was near Hartford, Conn., whence his father removed soon after his marriage with Cynthia Paine, in 1807, to Northfield, Muss. Here the subject of our sketch spent his boyhood days, and as the parental discipline was somewhat lax, with one boon companion he roamed the fields as he listed. What New England town with its woods and brooks and hills docs not furnish an endless museum of wonder and delight to a curious and enterprising lad? If his studies suffered in the mean time, he was strengthening the body for the toilsome life that lav before him. In his twelfth year his bosom friend was removed to other and sterner occupation, and in the solitude thus forced upon him he began to reflect. The necessity of learning dawned on his mind, and for nearly three years no more faithful and assiduous student was found in the school of Northfield than young Munsell. Book Neither Believer nor Infidel

Download or read book Neither Believer nor Infidel written by Jonathan A. Cook and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shedding new light on both classic and lesser-known works in the Melville canon with particular attention to the author's literary use of the Bible, Neither Believer Nor Infidel examines the debate between religious skepticism and Christian faith that infused Herman Melville's writings following Moby-Dick. Jonathan A. Cook's study is the first to focus on the decisive role of faith and doubt in Melville's writings following his mid-career turn to shorter fiction, and still later to poetry, as a result of the commercial failures of Moby-Dick and Pierre. Nathaniel Hawthorne claimed that Melville "can neither believe nor be comfortable in his unbelief," a remark that encapsulates an essential truth about Melville's attitude to Christianity. Like many of his Victorian contemporaries, Melville spent his literary career poised between an intellectual rejection of Christian dogma and an emotional attachment to the consolations of non-dogmatic Christian faith. Accompanying this ambivalence was a lifelong devotion to the text of the King James Bible as both moral sourcebook and literary template. Following a biographical overview of skeptical influences and manifestations in Melville's early life and career, Cook examines the evidence of religious doubt and belief in "Bartleby, the Scrivener," "Cock-a-Doodle-Doo!," "The Encantadas," Israel Potter, Battle-Pieces, Timoleon, and Billy Budd. Accessible for both the general reader and the scholar, Neither Believer Nor Infidel clarifies the ambiguities of Melville's pervasive use of religion in his fiction and poetry. In analyzing Melville's persistent oscillation between metaphysical rebellion and attenuated belief, Cook elucidates both well-known and under-appreciated works.
