Book Naked Barbies Warrior Joes and Other Forms of Visible Gender

Download or read book Naked Barbies Warrior Joes and Other Forms of Visible Gender written by Jeannie B. Thomas and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this folkloric examination of mass-produced material culture in the United States, Jeannie Banks Thomas examines the gendered sculptural forms that are among the most visible, including Barbie, Ken, and G.I. Joe dolls; yard figures (gnomes, geese, and flamingos); and cemetery statuary (angels, sports-related images, figures of the Virgin Mary, soldiers, and politicians). Images of females are often emphasized or sexualized, frequently through nudity or partial nudity, whereas those of the male body are not only clothed but also armored in the trappings of action and aggression. Thomas locates these various objects of folk art within a discussion of the post-women's movement discourse on gender. In addition to the items themselves, Thomas explores the stories and behaviors they generate, including legends of the supernatural about cemetery statues, oral narratives of yard artists and accounts of pranks involving yard art, narratives about children's play with Barbie, Ken, and G.I. Joe, and the electronic folklore (or "e-lore") about Barbie that circulates on the Internet.

Book Marxism and Historical Practice Vol I

Download or read book Marxism and Historical Practice Vol I written by Bryan D. Palmer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volumes of Marxism and Historical Practice bring together essays written by one of the major Marxist historians of the last fifty years. The pieces collected in Volume I, Interpretive Essays on Class Formation and Class Struggle, offer a stimulating, empirically grounded survey of North American collective behaviour, popular mobilizations, and social struggles, ranging from a rich discussion of ritualistic protest like the charivari through the rise of the Knights of Labor in the 1880s to campaigns against neoliberal labour reform in British Columbia in the early 1980s. What emerges is Palmer's sustained reflection on long-standing interpretive historical problems of class formation, the dynamics of social change, and how popular social movements arise and relate to law, the state, and existing cultural contexts.

Book excerpt: Flight Lieutenant Frank Clark died in a fiery collision between two Spitfires in the war-torn skies over Normandy. He left behind a one-year-old son and a thirteen-year-old brother. These two had an intense interest in trying to piece together the life and times of Frank Clark. However, there was no stash of photographs, no neat pile of letters, no log book, no diary. Book Losing Joe s Place

Download or read book Losing Joe s Place written by Gordon Korman and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jason's going to have the summer of his life — as long as he doesn't lose Joe's place. Sixteen-year-old Jason is looking forward to spending the summer in the big city with his friends Don and Ferguson. They've convinced their parents to let them sublet Jason's older brother Joe's apartment in Toronto. All they have to do is pay the rent each month and not, under ANY circumstance, put Joe in jeopardy of losing his lease. Easier said than done. What they didn't count on was dealing with Joe's eccentric landlord, Mr. Plotnick, or his strange friend, Rootbeer. And they certainly weren't expecting Joe's Camaro to be mistaken for a stolen car and get towed away. One crisis after another conspires to ruin their summer, but with Gordon Korman's trademark wit the journey is guaranteed to be both inventive and hilarious.

Book American Indians in the Early West

Download or read book American Indians in the Early West written by Sandra K. Mathews-Benham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of years of American Indian history are covered in this work, from the first migrations into North America, through the development of specific tribal identities, to the turbulent first centuries of encounters with European settlers up until 1800. American Indians in the Early West offers a concise guide to the development of American Indian communities, from the first migrations through the arrival of the Spanish, French, and Russians, to the appearance of Anglo-American traders in the easternmost portions of the West around 1800. With coverage divided into periods and regions, American Indians in the Early West looks at how Indian communities evolved from hunter-gatherers to culturally recognized tribes, and examines the critical encounters of those tribes with non-Natives over the next two-and-a-half centuries. Readers will see that the issues at stake in those encounters—political control, preserving traditions, land and water rights, resistance to economic and military pressures—are very relevant to the Native American experience today.
